We’re planning a wonderful weekend, with lots of activities and plenty of time to share memories, relive those great times at Horizons, and catch up with camp friends and staff. The per-person cost for the weekend is $130, which includes meals, lodging and all activities (bring your own sleeping bags, pillows and towels). We’re also offering an optional shuttle service from Fair Oaks Mall for $70 round trip.

For more information or to register for our Fall Reunion, please visit our web site, www.CampHorizonsVA.com. Hope to see you there!

This past summer Camp Horizons hosted 566 campers from 13 different countries and 16 different states, including two campers from the Czech Republic – Veronica and Krystof Tichy. They continued a family tradition by coming to Horizons – their dad, Karel Tichy, was a counselor here in 1992.

U.S. campers came from Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia, West Virginia, New York, Indiana, New Hampshire, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Colorado and North Carolina, as well as Washington, D.C. International campers represented the countries of the Ukraine, Germany, Spain, Singapore, France, Austria, Netherlands,

UK, China, Italy, Venezuela and the Czech Republic.

New this year, campers enjoyed First Tee Golf introduction, Water Aerobics, the “Boot Camp” fitness program, and Comic Book and Board Game making. Explorer campers enjoyed the North Fork Valley Canopy Tour in addition to the Via Ferrata, both at Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center in West Virginia, as optional activities.

Equestrian Camp, at the beginning and end of the summer season, celebrated its 2nd season with 18 young riders attending.

Leadership campers, here for four weeks of summer, received specific training in lead-ership, team building, group dynamics, con-

flict resolution and more. Leadership camp-ers lived with younger campers, and helped lead programs and activities, in addition to enjoying special activities just for them! Leadership campers for 2011 were Sam Kane, Aude Buchmuller, Marshall Edmunds, Ted Diamond, Megan Niewold, Kara Grosbach, Erin Walsh and Julia Howard.

Thanks to all campers and parents who have completed the on-line survey at: www.surveymonkey.com/s/CH2011 about your camp experience. If you have not done so, please complete the survey and share your comments, suggestions and ideas. Your feedback is invaluable as we think about ways to make Camp Horizons even better.

. . . and to our behind-the-scenes staff

Fall is in the air here, and it's time to look back at our sum-mer, remember all the great times, and begin to plan for next summer.

For us, Summer 2012 will have special meaning – it marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of Camp Horizons. While we haven’t finalized details yet, we have set the date for our 30th anniversary Staff Reunion. Mark your calendars for Labor Day weekend 2012!

This past summer was the inaugu-ral season of Camp Up with People, a new performing arts camp for teens that's a partnership between the international Up with People and the Horizons Learning Foundation, work-ing with Camp Horizons. The camp attracted teens from 12 different coun-tries, who were united by their interest in song, dance, community service and global citizenship. We’re proud to be a part of this great new summer camp program, and look forward to seeing it grow in years to come.

In addition to hosting our summer campers, we were pleased to share our great facilities and programs with the 20th annual Mid-Atlantic Burn Camp for young, burn survivors; Operation Purple for kids whose military par-ents either are or have been deployed; Special Olympics; Camp Dragonfly for children who have lost someone they love; and many other groups throughout the year.

Save this date: Oct. 28-30 for our Fall Reunion. We have a busy week-end of fun activities and special events planned. Hope to see you there!

Our talented dining services crew, headed by Food Service Director Steve Herrmann, included Brad Branner, Cheyenne Harsell, Josh Howdyshell,

Camp Up with People!Inaugural season of international performing arts camp huge success

Camp Up with People’s inaugural season was truly an international event, with 54 campers representing 12 dif-ferent countries and 10 different states. The performing arts camp, a partner-ship between the international Up with People and the Horizons Learning Foundation, working with Camp Horizons, held two three-week sessions. Twenty-five campers attended the first, and 29 campers attended the second.

The camp focused on four areas: performing arts, leadership, service and culture (global citizenship). During each session, campers performed ser-vice projects for the Salvation Army, the Shenandoah Volunteer Farm, and Eastern Mennonite High School as a way of giving back to their new com-munity.

The bulk of campers’ time was spent with the performing arts, culminating with a capstone performance at EMHS at the end of each session that was attended by Camp Horizons campers as well as guests from the community,

family and friends. Campers also had plenty of time to experience traditional camp activities at Camp Horizons. CUWP campers enjoyed horseback riding and the low challenge courses, and were a part of the weekly talent shows at Camp Horizons. CUWP campers also traveled to Nelson Rocks Outdoor Center in West Virginia to experience the exhilarating Via Ferrata climbing challenge and the beauti-ful North Fork Valley Canopy Tour, took a trip to Washington, D.C., and stayed with host families while visiting the city. But perhaps the most important aspect of CUWP was the connections this group of diverse young people made with each other, creating new friendships that span the globe.

A special thanks to the CUWP staff: Tim Lane, USA, camp director; Martin Brennan, USA, cast manager; Emma Nissen, Sweden, camp representative, education coordinator, music coordinator, counselor; Chris Pierno, Canada, camp representative, education coordinator, technical coordinator, counselor; Kyle

Chan, USA, dance captain, counselor; Lotte Van den heuvel, Belgium, dance captain, counselor; Samantha Gonzales, USA, food service, lifeguard, counselor; and Chiara Mari, Switzerland, food ser-vice, Swap Shop coordinator, first-aid/medical, counselor.

Also assisting CUWP were Lynne Morris, show director/producer; Bill Welsh, music director; Humberto Alabado, show director assistant; Charlotte Lane, vocal coach and sound technician; Peder Nielsen, lighting/sound support; and Sergio Campos, music assistant/counselor.

Dates for the 2012 Camp Up with People are: Cast A: July1-21; Cast B: July 22-Aug. 11. Cost for each three-week session is $2,600 and includes meals & lodging, transportation to and from Dulles International Airport, activities and pro-gram materials, performance production costs, field trips and service projects.
