All the events are coming up so fast now.

We had a great trip up in Fort Bragg with an “all the trimmings” fish frydinner out in the forest, not to mention being hauled off by the Keystonecops of Ben Ali. They always keep things going. We had a nice event. Atthe end of the parade one of our Shriner Children greeted us with herposter thanking the Shriners for helping her. At this time we are starting to think about the upcoming holidays. Youknow they are just around the corner when the children return to schooland football is on Monday nights. We are ending the year in great form. We hope you all enjoyed theMurder Mystery Dinner. Our chair people and Didgie put a lot into it. Thiswas followed by North Trip #3, which to me is one great outing. Afterarriving home we traded suitcases and caught a plane to Europe wherewe visited the clubs over there. Ceremonials at the Hospital are always special to me. I enjoy givingthe candidates a tour through the hospital and watching the expressionson their faces every time you tell them they will have a piece of this afterthey join. This is a valuable tool to use in recruiting new members. The Pote’s Ball and the Xmas party are the last events of our year andwe hope you come out and enjoy both of them; our chairpersons areworking very hard on them. In closing Didgie and I want to say thank you all for your support thisyear.

Yours In The Faith,

Dan Garrett

Patients Thank Shriners for helping Them defy the Odds

Following the premiere of the 2008 patient success video,“Defy the Odds,” at the Imperial Council session last July2nd, featured patient Brian Howard sang “Broken Vow” bypop singer Josh Groban. Brian and his twin sister, Shanareceived care for burn injuries at the Cincinnati SHC. DavidGrassi who is being treated for spina bifida at the St. LouisSHC, is also featured in the video. The teenagers thankedShriners for the wonderful care they receive at SHC, whichhas helped them “defy the odds”. David was born with spina bifida, a congenital anomalyaffecting the development of the spinal cord. Throughouthis childhood, he has received extensive physical therapyand occupational therapy at the St. Louis SHC. When hewas 11, he underwent a special surgery to keep his hipsfrom turning in. The surgery was successful, and he is ableto walk with crutches and braces today David, who will be a high school senior this fall, has madea name for himself as a competitive athlete. His favoritesports include sled hockey, wheelchair basketball and wheel-chair track. He participates in a local sports organization,Disabled Athlete Sports Association, and travels all over theU.S. and world to compete. On June 28, he won a bronzemedal in the 1500-meter wheelchair exhibition at the 2008Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore. When David is not inschool or training, he volunteers as a counselor for St. LouisVarity, an organization that buys medical equipment for kidswith disabilities. After graduation, he hops to attend a col-lege with a wheelchair sports team.

Brian and Shana Howard When Brian and Shana were 2 years old, a house fireleft them with second-and third degree burns on more than40 percent of their bodies. They spent a month at a localhospital, where they were in a medically induced comas fornearly 2 weeks. Once the twins stabilized, they were trans-ferred to SHC Cincinnati to receive expert burn care andbegin the healing and rehabilitation process. After severalweeks, they were released to their parents care and returnedregularly for out patient visits. They have received many treat-ments and undergone several reconstructive surgeries atthe Cincinnati SHC throughout their lives. The twins, who recently graduated high school, havevisited several Shrine (temples), centers over the years toshare their story and thank the men for their generosity. They enjoy connecting with other patients whenever theycan and look forward to mentoring burn injury survivors ata week long summer camp for SHC burn patients. RUMBLINGS FROM THE HARLEY DUDE

MURDER MYSTERY NIGHT

On the evening of Saturday, September 27, 2008Shriners and their friends and families were witnessesto a murder mystery. We enjoyed three hours of a playspecially written for the Aahmes Shrine by a thespiangroup that performs on the Sierra Railroad Murder Mys-tery Dinner Train out of Oakdale. Adding to the fun were Ben Ali Shrine’s Keystone Copswho were arresting the attendees for the benefit of vari-ous Shrine funds. A special thank you must go to the 3Keystone Cops led by John Timblin, Lou Cobb who cre-ated the “jail” for the arrestees to be detained in, andHoward Roberts for his “jailhouse” portraits. We also wantto thank Rodney Owens who served as the “MC”, andthe ladies and gentleman who manned the tables, MerryBurch, Valerie Roberts, Mary Jane Owens, Terry Gla-zier, Vesta Moody, and Randy Daniels.

About the same time that you will be receiving this issue you will also

have, or will receive shortly, your 2009 Dues Notice. Please be sure

to take action as soon as you re- ceive the 2009 Dues notice and get out your checkbook or Credit Card and send in your Dues payment. Asof January 1, 2009 if your dues are not paid you are actuallydelinquent. So, let’s not be “DELINQUENT” let’s have 2009be the year that we have 100% paid up Nobles. We can donothing about the “Black Camel” who takes so many ofour fine Nobles from us but we can and must stop the lossof good Nobles for Non-Payment of their Dues. If any Noblefeels that the paying of their dues too large a burden, pleasecall the office and ask for the Recorder, I am sure we canwork something out. Remember that everything will be instrict confidence. Please do not hesitate to call for assis-tance if necessary.

The September Stated Meeting was pretty well attendedbut I want to remind all of you to put December 17, 2008, onyour calendar as that will be the very important Stated Meet-ing where we will be electing the Officers for the ensuingShrine year. In addition to the Elected Officers we will alsobe electing the Nobles to represent Aahmes at the next Im-perial Sessions. As it is very important to vote in the Na-tional Elections in November it is equally important that youvote in our Shrine elections. If you aren’t interested enoughto take part in the very important elections you then alsogive up your right to criticize. This year you will not only beelecting a new Oriental Guide but I know from a very trustedsource that you will also be electing someone to fill the veryimportant position of Recorder. Let’s travel back a few yearsin time where we had to rent another building to hold ourelections because we did not have sufficient room in thefacility we were renting. Let’s fill the Aahmes Shrine Centeron Wednesday, December 17, 2008 for the election of offic-ers and show that we do care and support those that havestood up and are willing to lead Aahmes to Good Times andMore FUN.

I am not sure that all of you are aware that Aahmes hasthree (3) Nobles appointed to the Imperial International De-velopment Committee. They are Terry Moody, Steve Gla-zier and P.P. Bill Strickland. As you might not be aware theShrine is currently very active in establishing Shrine Clubsin various Countries outside of North America. The estab-lishment of a Shrine presence in Europe by Aahmes back in1953 was a precursor to this. The Imperial Shrine hope tosomeday be able to call ourselves International Shriners andnot the current Shrine of North America. There is muchactivity going on in various Countries that may make thiscome true in the near future.

I am proud to be only the second Aahmes recorder to haveheld this prestigious position. Noble Robert Abernathy alsoheld the position in 1939.

In closing I hope that all of you had a wonderful summerand are now preparing for the close of one Aahmes ShrineYear and are looking forward to the beginning of another. Iwant to offer my prayers and best wishes to the manyShriners and non-Shriners that were impacted by the hor-rible hurricanes in Texas and the rest of the Gulf Coast. Wecan only count our blessings that we live in such a wonder-ful area (even if it is expensive).

The Hospital in Galveston had some very significant dam-age and at this time I am not sure when it will be operatingfully. The Houston facility escaped any major problems. Forcomplete updates on the hospitals you can go to the ShrineWeb Site “shrinershq.org” and go to the link for the Hospi-tals.

Yours in the Faith,

Steve Glazier, Recorder

I want to thank the many Nobles that have taken the timeto offer their congratulations to me on being elected as the2008/2009 President of the Shrine Recorders Association.

THE SHRINERS THOUGHT OF MEI’m but a little cripple,A kid with a twisted knee,And my life was of little value,‘Til the Shriners thought of ME.

My days were dark and dreary,My hopes were small and wee,And I was filled with torture,‘Til the Shriners thought of ME.

I felt as if in a dungeon,Under heavy lock and key,I could not see the sunshine,‘Til the Shriners thought of ME.

But now I’m getting better,And happy as can be,A kid with a smile upon his face,Since the Shriners thought of ME.

A few more months of kindness,And then I can with gless,Play as other children play,

Since the Shriners thought of ME.And in the battle for a chance,I believe the Greatest Referee,Will surely give the decisions,To these Shriners who thought of ME.

November/December 2008 Aahmes News Page 11AN UPDATE ON THE SHRINERS HOSPITALS

IN GALVESTON AND HOUSTON, TEXASAFTER IKE

Just an update to the situation in Galveston and Hous-ton. I was in Galveston last Thursday and met with the Staff, and I am happy to say that all have been located. Manyhave been devastated with the loss of their home, but areliving with friends or relatives. They met with me at the K ofC Lodge just outside of Galveston. A temporary Office hasbeen set up in SHC Houston. There are other employeeswho are helping as well. Many have signed up for the FireWatch and we are proud of those who have volunteered.Lynn Clements is our HR Director and has a good handleon all of the issues with our staff. There was a lot of contri-butions as in clothes etc for them to take home. HaroldBacke is doing a great job getting the hospital cleaned upwith the help of a few companies. There was about 30 inchesof water in the building, but it is looking really good now.Harold has been working on a steady roll since getting backinto the building, overseeing the clean up and deserves a lotof credit. He looked a little worn out when I met with him onThursday. Looks like UTMB should have had their steamback up last Friday. When that is up and running, we willhave our life line with UTMB back and can get rid of a lot ofthe temporary equipment. I also would like to thank all ofthe staff at the hospital in Houston who have pitched in tohelp and accept the staff there. Many of the children fromGalveston went to Boston and Cincinnati, we thank thosethere for their help as well. The staff was very happy that they heard from headquar-ters. We learned from this experience that we need for emer-gency purposes, to have a Radio Station in the area that theemployees can listen to for information regarding the hospi-tal and their wellbeing. An emergency 800 number is alsofine, but when there is no electricity and the cell phone bat-tery dies, they would still have their emergency radio. Going back in history, that last time that such a surge inthe water came to Galveston was in the year 1900. Theyhave not seen anything like it since. The City is a disasterarea. Almost every home and business has to rebuild. Themedical community and the area around our hospital looksbetter than most of the city. We have a great work groupgetting us ready to take children back into the system. Iwould guess that by the 15th, we may be ready to bring someback. The air quality in the building is the stumbling block. The Parent Housing that we were just ready to open after 9years of construction and delays, will be delayed a littlelonger. All of the insulation in the floors got wet and willhave to be removed. That of course includes the carpeting. What was really strange was only one window in the build-ing was broken. The glass blew in and the blinds blew out,and are nowhere to be found, nor can they find the plywoodthat covered the window.

EMERGENCY FUND SET UP

We now have an emergency fund to help the Shrinersand the Employees affected by Hurricane Ike. Contribu-tions can be sent to Shriners of North America, 2900 RockyPoint Drive, Tampa, FL. 33607 and we will disperse to thoserequesting funds for help. Please show “Shriners DisasterRelief Fund” on your contribution. (These contributions arenot tax deductible.)

OTHER NEWS FROM THE HOSPITAL

I hope that you will tune in to the next NASCAR Racethat David Regan is in. He is doing a great bit of telling theStory of Shriners Hospitals for Children and we are proudof him. On Sunday, Oct. 12th, David Ragan, our NASCAR friend, drove a race car with a special Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren paint scheme in the 2008 season finale for the ARCARE/MAX Series. He wore a specially designed ShrinersHospitals for Children helmet, which he first wore in theNASCAR Sprint Cup Series Kansas 400 on Sept. 28th. Following the Oct. 12th race, David autographed theShriners Hospitals for Children helmet and put it up for auc-tion on eBay from Dec.15th-21st to benefit the health caresystem. The helmet will be delivered to the highest bidderby Christmas. Please encourage Nobility to keep checkingour Web site, www.shrinershq.org, to learn how they canplace a bid on the helmet. A special edition diecast car, modeled after the ShrinersHospitals race car, will be available for purchase soon. Davidwill personally autograph each car; only 2,500 will be sold.We are currently working out the details and will provideinformation on how to purchase this unique collector’s itemon our Web site. We are so grateful to David for his amazing display ofsupport and so grateful to you for helping spread the wordabout his efforts. With your help, we’re able to maximizethis relationship to its fullest potential. Your dedication andenthusiasm are greatly appreciated. I realize a lot of activity is in the next few weeks andmonths. The many Educational seminars, the Donor Devel-opment seminar, the East West Game. Ones head wouldspin with all the events, but that is what makes the Shrineand our Shriners such Feztastic people. Along with their fami-lies and our Staff, we all appreciate your dedication towardsour mission.

God Bless all you do for us and please give your Lady abig hug and “Thanks” for not only helping us, but allowingyou the time to do these things we ask.

Fraternally,

Ralph W. SembPresident and Chief Executive Officer,Shriners Hospitals for Children

Shriners Hospitals Rated Oneof theMost-Trusted Nonprofits

Shriners Hospitals for Children ranked as one of the topthree most trusted nonprofit organizations in a recent sur-vey of wealthy individuals conducted by the Luxury Insti-tute, an independent research firm.

The New York City-based Luxury Institute conducts avariety of impartial surveys and research to guide and edu-cate extremely affluent individuals and the companies thatmarket to them on trends, net-worth consumer rankings, and ratings of luxury brands and best practices.

This was the first year the institute conducted its LuxuryBrand Trust Index survey of nonprofit organizations, saidMartin Swanson, the firm’s vice president of business de-velopment.

Shriners Hospitals for Children ranked third among themost-trusted nonprofits. Children’s Hospital of Philadel-phia ranked first, and St. JudeChildren’s Research Hospi-tal ranked second. “Being recognized as one of the topmost-trusted nonprofit organizations demonstrates that themedical care provided by Shriners Hospitals is highly re-garded and respected,” said Ralph Semb, president and chiefexecutive officer of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “That’sa great honor for us.”

A sample of 1,666 consumers with an average incomeof $348,000 and an average net worth of $3.7 million wasasked to participate in the online survey. Respondents rated41 national nonprofit organizations on several factors, in-cluding trustworthiness for delivering superior quality, cus-tomer service, being innovators and leaders, using the high-est legal, ethical and moral standards, and being good cor-porate citizens. Fourteen of the nonprofits included in thesurvey were medical institutions or healthrelated organiza-tions.

“High-net-worth consumers are the largest donors andare expecting – even demanding – measurable results, trans-parency, lack of conflicts of interest and fiscal responsibil-ity from nonprofits,” said Milton Pedraza, the LuxuryInstitute’s chief financial officer. “We should all be veryproud of the fact that Shriners Hospitals has received sucha high ranking by this group of individuals,” said Semb.“Their trust in our hospitals and our mission reinforces thefact that all our 22 Shriners Hospitals have been successfulin honoring our number-one commitment to provide ex-ceptional specialty treatment to children who need it, at nocharge.”

The clowns had a wonderful Ladies’ night on October 11, in Modesto. We had a great dinner catered by the Clarion staff and goodcheer for all involved. There really never can be enoughthanks for our wonderful Ladies without whom we couldn’tbe Shiners let alone Shrine Clowns. We followed that up with a great golf tournament atFrench Camp Golf Course on November 2. Tom “Chippy”Killian was the main man on that event and we made a tidyprofit with a great time had by all. I would especially like tothank Tom and his Lady Karen for all the hard work thatwent into that event. The clowns have been active these last few months withmembers in face at the Five Valley Screening Clinic inModesto on October 11, the Ceremonial on November 1and various other activities around this part of California. My last few events will be the Christmas Party on Decem-ber 13 and a couple of Christmas parades as well. I know that Terry “Ole” Erlandson can not wait to takeover a chief of clowns and we are eager to see the changeshe has planned for next year. I am looking forward to theexaulted role of Past Chief, which many say is even betterthan retirement.

During the months of September and October wehad no parades and therefore got plenty of time to practiceand to discuss upcoming events. We are still working ongetting a cover for the Legion’s trailer for the hot and in-clement days we participate in parades. With our last IceCream Social fundraiser, this should be within reach.

The Legion of Honor’s upcoming events will includethe Pleasanton’s Veteran’s Day parade on Nov. 2, possiblyLivermore’s Christmas Parade on Dec. 6th which we firstparticipated in and enjoyed last year, and a Christmas Partyin December. At our December 8th meeting we will be hold-ing our election of officers.

As we approach the end of the year, it is with greatsorrow that we must report the passing of one of our mostdedicated members of the Legion of Honor. On Sunday,September 17, 2008 Ralph Renholts was recalled by theSupreme Commander in the sky. He was an integral partof the Legion of Honor for many years by holding many of-fices in the Legion of Honor including Commander in 1988and 1993, Chaplain for 10 years, and Finance Officer. Hewas also a member of the Legion of Honor’s Glock andDrum Band and played the Glockenspiel in the all parades. His sense of humor and dry wit always enlivened every gath-ering he was a part of. For the Legion of Honor and hismany friends in it, his absence will be sadly noticed.

---Paul Rose, Commander

The good news is that Ed Blanchard has rejoined the band with his tuba, a most welcome addition. We have missed him for quite awhile. The Band also playeda gig at the Sequoay Club and was well received. We havebeen working on a bunch of dance tunes. Now if we couldonly find a few dancers it would be great. At our last rehearsal the band learned that what a tubaplayed calls a diminished fifth is an empty bottle ofScotch. They also learned the difference between alawnmower and a trumpet is that your neighbor gets mad ifyou don’t return the lawnmower. We still have room for a few more players, especiallysaxophone and trumpet.

---Durland L. Skinner, Conductor

Tune-up begins at 6:00 pm, dinner at 7:00 pm, followedby dancing and raffle drawings. You, your family and yourfriends are welcome to attend. There will be lots of crab, pasta, salad, bread, live country-western music featuring the

Good Day, to all. Issue to issue time-frames, surely do pass quickly. As I writethis article, the Ides of Sep/Oct have quickly passed us by and we are into the month of November, where the ghosts and

goblins of Hallowe’en have passed and the pathway ofThanksgiving and Christmas appear before us. We do hopethat you enjoy both and give Thanks at both celebrations forthat which we have and therefore are not “wonting”of un-necessary “things”.

I have word that not only has a Brother been elevated toour Shrine member Nobility but still more Brothers are ex-pected to participate in a ‘cold sands’ experience in order tojoin our member ranks. Welcome aboard Nobles. We notonly look forward to your active engagement in our worksbut to an ongoing personal friendship.

The next two months will bring about some change inthe Captaining of our Shrine vessel via the election of a newBoard of Directors. It is through individual, active, participa-tion that we help keep our ship out of shallow waters and acourse of helpful- ness to others. You are encouraged tojoin us in this endeavor.

Units will have their individual functions during the com-ing months, while the parent Shrine Club will have but twoscheduled get togethers – Nominations & Elections at theEel River Lodge (date to be advertised shortly) and the an-nual Christmas Party, scheduled for Dec 14th at the BaywoodCountry Club. At thistime, we still are not sure who will be our Club President for2009, but be assured, there are enough enthusiastic Shrinershere who will carry on our long tradition of service to theHospitals. On the sad news side, the Black Camel has called again, this time taking our very popular past president, Frank Beck.He will be missed by all who knew him. ---Bob Snodgrass, Sec’y. [email protected]

The Five Valley picnic on September 20 was a lot of funwith deep pit barbecue with all the usual food and bar.
