PRESIDENT’SMESSAGE

As I write this, I have just gotten back from the Vista Heights Gar-den Harvest Party. What a dedi-cated group of people we have working the garden, growing what they eat. Thank you for the invitation, it was a great experi-ence. While I was there, Gillian asked me if there would be an article written about the art in-

stallations with photo’s in the next newsletter. Well, Gil-lian, look for it in December once they are all nished. The bird theme is a great story and I’m sure our artist Doug Driediger will weave a wonderful story relating our community to the birds.

Welcome to our new publisher Great News. We are now part of an army of 89 Communities that publish a news-letter with them. We hope you like the new format.

Thank you to every volunteer past and present in this community. For those who have put in their time, thank you for the solid foundation you have given us, and to our current and new volunteers Thank You for all that you have done to make this the best community in Cal-gary. For all of our new board members elected in Sep-tember, it’s my honour to work with you. Don’t forget to join us November 7th.

Join us for Family Movie Night, November 11th and Pub Night November 25th. Both are a great way to meet your neighbours. Drum Fun is still going on until the end of the year for our 50 plus folks who’d like to get a little more t. Stop by on Monday and Wednesday morning to see what it’s all about.

In December, our annual Winter Festival is set for De-cember 4th at the Community Hall. Check out our Se-niors Dinner on December 19th. If it’s anything like the Trivia get together, you will enjoy this fun group of resi-dents.

And remember, “Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy.  You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of com-munity you want to live in.” Join us, we’ll welcome you with a smile.

Nurturing a sense of belonging on National Child Day November 20National Child Day is celebrated annually to mark two his-toric events: the 1959 signing by Canada of the United Na-tions Conventions on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and the adoption of the convention.

This year’s theme is a young person’s right to belong.

Identity and belonging is about young people develop-ing a positive sense of who they are, and feeling that they are valued and respected as part of a family and community. Positive messages about their families, backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and languages help chil-dren learn, develop skills and a healthy sense of identity and belonging; this helps them later to better deal with bullying and discrimination.

One way your family can celebrate National Child Day is to share a book or story about belonging.

The book How Far Do You Love Me? by Lulu Delacre cel-ebrates love and belonging. It gives parents and teachers an opportunity to share a story that features people from di erent corners of the world using their geographical locations as references for how great their love is.

A Look BackWelcome back everyone to another historic feature in the Crossroads Convenor. Every month we feature an excerpt of our “Journey Through the Crossroads” history book. Last month we looked at Early Belfast Life. This month we will look at the Belfast School and the celebrations on May 29th, 2010. Does anybody remember the old mink farms at the end of 14 Avenue?  How about the old greenhouses? Also, I lost the con-tact info for the residents who know Lillian Mayland. In 2010, we celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the Belfast School that opened in 1929.

There were no schools in the area until the early 1900s. Early pioneer children like the Burgoyne’s and Rackham’s had to walk a long way across Nose Creek to get to the Bridgeland School or Stanley Jones as it was renamed in 1916.

In 1915, after much discussion, the school board paid $30/month to rent out the Belfast Presbyterian Church to accommodate grades 1 to 3. Belfast continued to grow and a petition was sent to the board. Residents complained about the hardships of sending their kids to Stanley Jones School and this prompted the school board to move the old Nose Creek School to the new location.

This is the petition, dated Oct. 14/1913. “We, the undersigned residents of the subdivisions of Belfast, Fair-view, Kitsalano and Morris Place, in the City of Calgary, do hereby make application to the school board of the City of Calgary for a

public school, to be erected su ciently near and central to the residents of the above mentioned properties to enable us to send our children to school.”

There were 34 school-aged children in the area.

This one room school has a lot of history be-hind it. It was originally the Nose Creek School located on the site of the North Calgary School. It was originally built in 1895 and opened on September 2, 1896. It was originally located

near the corner of Edmonton Trail and Mcknight Blvd and was moved into Belfast in 1915 at a cost of $800. The school had a long journey as it was moved three miles over a very rough prairie littered with gopher holes. Nose Creek’s rst principal and teacher are unknown, but the earliest teacher listed was Maude Keen in 1904 and she had 20 some stu-dents before moving to Belfast.

The rst Belfast teacher was F. Cannon in 1915, the rst teacher/Principal was Miss A. McIntosh in 1916 and the rst grades 1 to 3 teacher was Miss Beatrice A. Roy. Other early teachers were E. Hartley, R. Murton, G. Black, C.E. Mitchell, E.H.J. Lynds, Margaret T. Watson, R. Anderson, S.J. Howarth, Marjorie Windspear, Theo G. Finn and John A. Maxwell. The school was rst moved to 10th Ave and 17th A Street area, but of course there were no roads, streets or addresses to distinguish where it was until Belfast was developed the 1950s. The Belfast School was a one room school with a pot belly stove and an outhouse out back. This school was named after the community in which it was situated. It sat there until the new school was built in 1960.

I have some questions about when the Belfast and Nose Creek Schools rst opened – if you have information about the opening dates of either school, please contact me at 403-601-5141.

Join me next month for another instalment of A Look Back, our “Journey Through the Crossroads” feature!
