PRESS INFORMATION – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE FANTASTIC WHERE’S WALLY? SCHOOL SEARCH IS ON! On World Book Day, Thursday 2 March 2017, Wally-watchers will celebrate 30 years of Where’s Wally? with a hunt to find Wally hidden in (INSERT NAME OF SCHOOL in CITY/TOWN) and around the country! The school will be hiding a tiny Wally figure for eagle-eyed Wally spotters to find in order to receive an “I Found Wally” card and a The Fantastic Where’s Wally? Search certificate. Amazing prizes are up for grabs for the best photos of World Book Day celebrations with Wally, so fingers crossed for (INSERT NAME OF SCHOOL)! Where’s Wally? celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and is also part of the World Book Day line-up of titles available for £1. Children in the UK and Ireland will receive a book token for £1 that they can redeem in bookshops across the country, with many taking the opportunity to dress as their favourite book character on the day. (SCHOOL NAME) has been celebrating World Book Day with (INSERT DETAILS OF WORLD BOOK DAY CELEBRATIONS). Wally is the creation of Martin Handford, whose entertaining drawings of crowd scenes first swept the globe in 1987. Since then, the Where’s Wally? books have held a favourite spot on bookstore shelves the world over and have sold over 67 million copies worldwide in 31 countries. Wally has reached celebrity status: he has been referenced in the primetime American TV shows Frasier, The Simpsons and Friends; he appeared on the 1000th anniversary cover of Rolling Stone magazine as a cultural icon of the last 40 years; he has even been found on Google Earth! Martin Handford spent much of his childhood drawing and his earliest influences were cinema epics and playing with toy soldiers. At art college he continued to draw what he calls “busy and militarily correct battle scenes” which led to his job as a freelance illustrator specialising in drawing crowd scenes for numerous clients. Each picture takes Martin months to draw. “As I work my way through a picture, I add Wally when I come to what I feel is a good place to hide him,” he explains. In celebration of Wally’s longevity and popularity, Walker Books is teaming up with World Book Day and schools across the country, including (INSERT NAME OF HOST BOOKSTORE) here in (INSERT NAME OF CITY/TOWN), to have fun and encourage people to share a love of reading and books.
