What kind of course is right for you?

The college offers a great range of academic and general vocational courses for full time 16-19 year old students and we are committed to ensuring that you’ll follow a programme that’s exactly right for you.

To give you the best possible chance for success, we look at your overall GCSE profile as well as your results in individual subjects, to help you choose a programme that is most suited to your needs. We do this by calculating your Average Point Score (APS) - see the box below for how we do this.

How your APS is calculatedEach GCSE grade is given a number of points from 1-8 (A*=8, A=7, B= 6 and so on). To apply for A-Levels, the majority of points must be from standard GCSES. Your average will be found by dividing the total point score by the number of subjects you took. Then, for example, to study a 4-subject AS course you will normally need an APS of 5.2. Some subjects require a higher APS score. For example, A Level Science and Maths require a minimum point score of 5.5. But if in doubt, apply! We will offer guidance.

BTEC Level 3 Diploma / Extended DiplomaThis is a full time, 2 year course, equivalent to 3 A Levels for the BTEC Extended Diploma and 2 A Levels for the BTEC Diploma. This means that when you have finished, you can choose to go into employment straight away or go to university first.

As well as learning about the sector skill area you have chosen, you develop the skills and knowledge you need to start your career. You will also have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience as part of the programme.

BTECLevel3Certificate/Subsidiary DiplomaThe Certificate, studied in the first year is equivalent to an AS Level, while the Subsidiary Diploma (2nd year) is equivalent to an A Level. You can take these alongside an AS/A Level programme.

You’ll find more detailed information about all our courses in our series of booklets for the different Programme Areas, or on our website.

A LevelsYou’re likely to choose 4 AS subjects in Year 1, leading to 3 A2 subjects in Year 2. Sometimes it is more appropriate to study 3 AS subjects plus the AS Extended Project Qualification. You may also be able to choose a BTEC Level 3 Certificate/ Subsidiary Diploma alongside 3 AS Levels. We can offer guidance on the best choice for you.

Vocational coursesBTEC Diplomas are practical, skill and knowledge-based courses. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are linked to realistic workplace situations. There may be an opportunity to study an AS Level alongside your course.

18

Page 19: Join our outstanding success - Sir George Monoux College · • Aspiring Professionals Programme • Oxbridge Applicants’ Support programme • Medicine / Dentistry Applicants’

BTEC Level 2 Diploma with Progression to Level 3Depending on your GCSE results, it may be better to start your study at Sir George Monoux College with a one-year BTEC Level 2 Diploma. When you have successfully completed this you will be able to progress onto the Level 3 course, provided you have good attendance and have achieved a Merit or above. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification, such as the BTEC Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma. The BTEC Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to 4 GCSE grades A*- C and is a full time course.

Fast Forward to ScienceThree Year A Level Science Programme(withFoundationYear)If you are keen to study A Level science subjects, but just miss out on achieving the necessary B GCSE grades, then Fast Forward To Science is the course for you. It consists of a foundation year, comprising of resits in GCSE Science

subjects, and GCSE Maths and English (if required). You will also study English for Academic Purposes (at Level 3), GCSE Psychology and a Level 3 certificate in Quantitative Methods. You will then go on to take the 2-year A Level programme.

Extended Project QualificationThis AS Level qualification can be taken as part of your Level 3 (A Level/BTEC Diploma) programme. If you have a keen interest in a topic, are involved in voluntary work or other activity you may be able to develop it into a project. You will be assessed on your ability to devise, plan, organise and carry out a project. Good research is also an important element, as is the ability to reflect on and learn from your experience. You will be required to write up a report, keep a reflective log and do a presentation of your work.

Essential SkillsAll students are assessed for literacy and you will be helped with a literacy course if needed. If you do not have a Level 2 qualification in English or Mathematics, you will have the opportunity to study for this.

English: If you have a D grade in GCSE English or English Language, you can enrol onto a one-year GCSE retake course. If you have an E grade, you can enrol onto a two year retake course.

Mathematics: If you have a D grade in GCSE mathematics, you may be able to enrol onto a GCSE retake course, though not necessarily in your first year here. If you have an E grade or below you can enrol onto a Financial Maths course. Once you have completed this, you may be able to progress to GCSE Mathematics. Students who are not studying Financial Mathematics or GCSE Mathematics will be offered a numeracy course.

Entry requirements: what do you need ?In addition to your APS (opposite page), you’ll normally need to achieve the following results to be accepted onto the programmes:
