“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (Lao Tzu).

With most Americans being three or four generations removed from the farm, the general public has very little idea of what modern agriculture is about. The Missouri Farm Bureau (MFB) Foundation for Agriculture was created more than 20 years ago to bridge this gap by focusing on agriculture education and leadership development.

The Foundation funds a vari-ety of programs and activities to educate all ages about agriculture. The St. Louis Science Center GROW exhibit opened in June 2016 and has attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors. The GROW exhibit, a joint venture between Missouri and Illinois Farm Bureaus, and many other agriculture organizations and com-panies, is a great way to share the “farm to table” story of agriculture.

Each year up to $7,500 in mini-

grants are awarded to teachers for elementary school classroom projects. Teachers use this funding for creative twists on the theme of where our food comes from. This includes projects such as “Grow Your Own Pizza” and field trips to the George Washington Carver National Monument.

At the high school level, the Foundation partners with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to implement the Missouri Agricultural Skills and Knowledge assessment program. An Industry Recognized Credential certificate is awarded to students who have completed the required education and training, and dem-onstrated proficiency, in one or more of the 15 specified testing areas. In the four years that the Foundation has partnered on the program, over 27,000 certificates have been earned, many awarded

by county Farm Bureau leaders. Scholarships are provided annu-

ally at six universities and colleges in Missouri. There are also scholarships given to two students planning to enter a mixed or large animal prac-tice at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine and for four vocational-technical students at Missouri institutions pursuing training in an agriculture-related field. Since the start of the Foundation, more than $146,000 has been awarded in scholarships.

The Wallendorf log home is an opportunity to showcase Missouri’s rural heritage and educate the gen-eral public about the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. Located on the MFB Center grounds in Jefferson City, free tours of the log home are available by reserva-tion for schools and county Farm Bureau groups.

mental in the development of young adults on the cusp of becoming agricul-ture’s future leaders.

Funding is provided for the Ambassador Program where two stu-dents are selected to represent agri-culture and Farm Bureau for one year. Among other things, these ambassadors attend the legislative trip to Washington, D.C., and assist with events at the Missouri State Fair.

The Foundation provides funds for the state Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference and prizes for the State Young Farmers and Ranchers Achievement Award and Discussion

Meet winners. Funding also goes to the Agriculture Leaders of Tomorrow (ALOT) program.

To aid in the legacy of the state’s rich farm history, MFB is a partner with University Extension and the University of Missouri in the Missouri Century Farm Program. Funding to recognize century farms comes from the Foundation.

And, when farmers need assistance after natural disasters, the Foundation is there to contribute. This year saw floods and fires in the Midwest and on both coasts. The Foundation gave $5,000 to the Louisiana Farm Bureau Foundation for flood assistance. Later in the summer,

$5,000 was given to the Wildfire Relief fund to help ranchers rebuild in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

County Farm Bureaus are benefitting through the Foundation’s county grant program. Up to $300 annually is avail-able for local agriculture education and leadership development programs and activities. County events supported over the past year include farm safety, com-modity promotions, and presentations with the new agriculture economic con-tribution study.

One event at a time, the Foundation is making a difference by helping to tell your story of agriculture.

BANQUET SPONSORSIt was a fun couple of days June 4 and

5 when the MFB Foundation for Agriculture hosted a double-play — the Annual Foundation Banquet and Golf Classic on back-to-back days. Featured speaker Cardinal base-ball great Ozzie Smith was a hit at the ban-quet as he answered questions about baseball and some of his greatest moments on the diamond. The banquet’s silent auction raised $5,635 for Foundation programs. The next day, the golf tournament was held at the Jefferson

City Country Club. Thirty-two 4-person teams were divided into two flights. Winning Flight A was Casey Wasser, Ryan Rowden, Scott Swain and Tom Crawford. The winning Flight B team was Mark Wright, Justin Schuster, Joey Evans, John Harris. Scott Avis won the putting contest. The banquet and tournament com-bined raised $27,016 for Foundation programs. Thanks to our sponsors, everyone who par-ticipated and to those who worked to put on two well-received events.
