Join in Jamboree is a way for all members of Scouts Australia to participate in a World Scout Jamboree.

The Programs provided are some ideas of activities in sample programs kindly provided by Section Leaders from the ACT Branch to assist those not attending WSJ2011 to Join In Jamboree and learn more about Sweden.

Please use the Programs as you would like, adapt them or use them in their entirety it will depend on your Youth Members, Leaders and other resources. These are useful resources thanks to our Scouting network.

Join–in Jamboree Welcome to the Join‐in‐Jamboree. The following set of programs is for Joey Scout Scouts Scouts. There are four programs:

World Jamboree

The natural environment of Sweden

Swedish culture – Things that you might find or do in Sweden

Scouting Solidarity – Enjoy Scouting friendship by sharing a meeting with another Mob For each program we have given a brief overview and a list of equipment needed. Following this overview of all the programs we then give a detailed explanation of each activity. We hope you and your Joey Scout Scouts Scouts have fun participating in these Join‐in Jamboree programs. Please feel free to use these programs to suit your own Mob and feel free to incorporate your own ideas and change things around as much as you like. We would be interested to hear what your Mob really enjoyed in the programs and any good ideas you had.

World Jamboree Program Overview

Aim: To introduce the Joey Scout Scoutss to the concept of a Jamboree and in particular a World Jamboree. They will learn where the world Jamboree will be this year and also learn about the two previous Jamborees and be introduced to the concept of the whole world of Scouting. Program:

Swedish Natural Environment Program Overview

Aim: To learn about the natural environment in Sweden and compare it with the Australian environment. Program:

Opening

A short introduction to Sweden.

Snow storm.

Moose/Elk and kangaroo game.

Make Aurora Borealis snow jars OR paintings

Are we in Sweden or Australia game?

Closing

Equipment:

Bed sheet or small parachute

Lots of packing beads, Styrofoam or starch

Straight sided glass jars, one per Joey Scout Scouts

Black paper

Light or fluoro green, pick or blue pencils or crayons

Glitter

Double sided sticky tape or tacky glue

World Jamboree Program If keen during the opening ceremony give each Joey Scout Scouts a scarf indicating whether they are from Sweden, Australia, England or Thailand. The ‘scarf’ could be made from crepe paper. The current Jamboree will be in Sweden, the last Jamboree was in England and the previous one was in Thailand. Looking forward the next one will be in Japan. World Jamboree Traffic Jam: Allocate each Joey Scout Scouts to either Sweden, Australia, Thailand or England. Line Joey Scout Scouts up at the end of the Scout Hall with a large area in front of them in which they can run to the end of the hall and back. Tell the following story during which Joey Scout run to the end of the hall and back when the country to which they have been allocated is mentioned. All Joey Scouts run to the end of the hall and back when the words World Jamboree are said. Tell the Joey Scouts to listen carefully because they must not run when World is said and they must not run when Jamboree is said only when World Jamboree is said.

Have you ever heard of a World Jamboree? It is when Scouts from all over the world get together for a camp. There are thousands of Scouts camping in thousands of tents and all of the Scouts get to meet lots of other Scouts and have lots of fun. This year there will be a World Jamboree in Sweden. There will be Scouts from Australia, Scouts from England, Scouts from Thailand Scouts from the US and Scouts from lots and lots different countries. They are expecting around 38,000 people, that will include Scouts and leaders and people running activities and they will have to camp in tents at the World Jamboree. The Scouts from Sweden will be running lots of exciting activities for the Scouts from England, Thailand, Brazil, Australia and all the other countries. The theme of this World Jamboree is Simply Scouting. They will just have fun being Scouts. They will focus on three things. The first is meetings. The Scouts from Thailand will meet Scouts from the USA, the Scouts from Australia will meet Scouts from England. In fact all the Scouts will meet Scouts from lots of different countries all over the world and learn lots of things about lots of different countries and cultures. The second thing is that all the Scouts will enjoy the natural environment of Sweden. The Scouts will be able to see all the birds and trees that they have there. The third thing is solidarity. This means that Scouts from all over the world stick together and help each other. Scouts from England help Scouts from Papua New Guinea, Scouts from Thailand help Scouts from Cambodia, Scouts from Australia help Scouts from Indonesia and Scouts from Sweden help Scouts from Russia. When you are a Scout you can go to an Australian Jamboree when you are between 10 and a half and 13 years old. But you have to be between 14 and 18 years old to go to a World Jamboree. The next one is in Japan in 2015 but you still won’t be old enough yet, but by 2020 you will be old enough. So who knows you might be able to go to a World Jamboree then. Game from England: Choose one of the following which I found at http://www.escouts.org.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=6709 The following games were provided by tomahawk aka "Old Battle Axe". These all sounded good to me. Shark Attack 1: Like musical chairs, but using hoops on the ground...the beavers "swim" around the islands (hoops) and then you shout shark attack, and they have to get into a hoop. But you keep removing a hoop after every go until there are only 2 left and they all have to hold each other in the hoop! Shark Attack 2: A parachute game. All Beavers hold the parachute sitting in a circle with legs straight out (under the chute). One Beaver is the shark. Make the chute/sea very rough....and the shark attacks by trying to drag one of the beavers under the chute. But!!!! You should also have 2 life guards, who have to grab the victim and stop him going under. The victim has to issue a blood curdling scream as he is attacked to let the lifeguards know he is being attacked! Oh hours and hours of fun with this one!! Knights and Warriors (Tomahawk’s fav): (You could make the knights St George to highlight the English connection) Have two equal teams, lined up facing each other. Name one Knight and the other Warriors. Have the knights take 2 big steps forwards. Then warriors take 1 ballerina step/sumo wrestler step/hop/jump/etc. ‐ use your imagination. Alternate them and at some point shout: “Knights....attack!” The knights have to try and capture the fleeing warriors. Again, huge fun and can go on for some time. Dead ants..... Two "taggers" with some form of identifier (fluorescent jacket or similar is what we use!) and they tag someone, who then has to lie on the ground and put their arms and legs in the air. The remaining untagged people have to try and pick up the dead ant and carry him/her back to the safe zone. The object is to keep away from the taggers. I think?.

Spiders web: All leaders stand with legs and arms stretched out in an X shape. Kids have to get past you without being tagged. If they get tagged, they also have to stand in an X position. They can be released by another beaver going through their legs. Game about Thailand: In Thailand a form of transport is the tuk‐tuk. Equipment: Hoops, one per team of Joey Scouts. Instructions: Put the Joey Scouts into teams of 3 or 4. The first two Joey Scouts go in the hoop. This is the tuk‐tuk. The Joey Scouts line up one behind the other. The first Joey Scout Scouts is the driver and the second is the passenger. The Joey Scouts drive up to the end of the Scout Hall and back. Here the driver gets out and goes to the back of the group. The passenger becomes the driver and the next Joey Scout Scouts in the team becomes the passenger. They go up to the end of the hall and back, and so on until all Joey Scouts have been a driver and a passenger. Then they sit down in a straight line to indicate they have finished. Game from Sweden: Animal Den Moving Equipment: Hoops, one per Joey Scout Scouts Instructions: There is a hoop on the floor for each Joey Scout Scouts (or some other way of marking their den). Each Joey Scout Scouts (or leader) chooses which animal they are. Then the animals are all in their dens. Then the call is

made, “All animals change dens”. The Joey Scouts must move like their animal and find a new den. After the animals have all settled down top sleep the call is made again and they change dens again. And so the game goes. If you like you can have one less den than animal and so when they change dens the homeless animal gets a chance of finding a den. (I don’t like that so much as sometimes there is one poor Joey Scout Scouts that remains homeless the whole game. My Joey Scouts love pretending to be animals and so would be happy just to move dens).

Build Gateways: Each troop at the world Jamboree will erect a gateway to their campsite. A gateway helps visitors know who is camping there and where they came from. It also helps Scouts find their own campsite when they have been out and about the Jamboree site. Equipment: Poles made from rolled up newspaper Cardboard boxes Masking tape or brown packing tape Coloured paper to make flags Scissors Instructions: Joey Scouts work together in small groups to make a gateway for their ‘troop’. The gateway must have the troop name, a symbol and a country’s flag. Let the Joey Scouts use their imagination to design the gateway. Show them some pictures of some to give them some ideas. World Scout Memory Game Scouts love to swap and collect badges at a Jamboree. This game introduces Joey Scouts to some of the many world Scout emblems. Make a set of memory cards using World Scout emblems. You can use the ones provided or choose some yourself. Print the sheet twice so that you have pairs of cards. You will need one set of cards for each 3‐4 Joey Scouts. Twenty to thirty cards will be enough in one set. This game is played just as the usual memory game. Shuffle the cards and place them face down a table or the floor. Each Joey Scout Scouts takes it in turn to turn over two cards. If they match they remove them and keep them in a pile. They turn over two more cards etc if the two cards turned over don’t match the next Joey Scout Scouts has a turn. This continues until all cards are matched.

Straight after opening, while the Joey Scouts are still in the circle get them to sit down and have a short talk about Sweden: Where is it? Look at the map (you can find the one I liked at the end of these notes) http://www.wall‐maps.com/World/UNIWorld.jpg . Look how much further north Sweden is above the equator than Australia is south below the equator. Australia is between 10ºS and 43ºS in latitude and Sweden is between 55ºN and 69ºN in latitude. What does this mean about the Swedish environment? How is it different from Australia? Sweden is much closer to the North Pole than Australia is to the South Pole and so Sweden is much colder in winter. They will have lots of snow in winter. Also they have very long days in summer and very short days in winter. In the north of Sweden during summer the sun doesn’t set. In the Northern part of Sweden it is called the Land of the Midnight Sun because the sun doesn’t actually set in the middle of summer. You can see the time lapse photo below where the sun doesn’t actually set. Kiruna is in the very northern part of summer. In winter there are some days where the sun doesn’t actually rise.

In winter when it is dark for a long time at night they can see the Aurora Borealis in the north of the country. This looks like curtains of light in the sky. It doesn’t appear all of the time and you are lucky to see it. It comes because magnetic particles come from the sun from solar flares and travel towards the poles. Pass pictures around and talk about it a bit. For pictures of the aurora borealis go to www.travelvivi.com/wheretowatch‐aurora‐borealis or see the sheet at the end of this program. Swedish native forests are mostly pine trees and Australia forests are mostly eucalypts. Australia has deserts, Sweden has lots of lakes. Both countries have beaches and mountains. Do you think they have kangaroos? No but they do have Moose/Elk and reindeer. Show pictures. There are a couple of Moose/Elk pictures at the end of this program or you can Google Moose/Elk and you will get lots.

Moose/Elk and Kangaroo Game: No Equipment needed. Instructions: Divide Joey Scouts into teams with even numbered participants. Joey Scouts are to go up the hall and back again in pairs as either a Moose/Elk or a Kangaroo. If they are a Moose/Elk the front Joey Scout makes antlers with their hands and the second Joey Scout is the back end of the Moose/Elk and holds onto the front Joey Scout’s waist. If they are a kangaroo the front Joey Scout is the Joey Scout and the back Joey Scout is the mother kangaroo and puts their hands on the front Joey Scout’s shoulders. They jump up and back the hall like this. In each team the pairs of Joey Scouts alternate between Moose/Elk and Kangaroos. This means that Moose/Elk and Kangaroos from different teams will be running together. Snow Storm Game: Equipment:

Bed sheet or small parachute

Packing beads (Styrofoam or corn starch) Instructions: The Joey Scouts all stand equally spaced around the sheet holding on to the edge (rather like a parachute). Tell a story about a snow storm. It starts off very calm and then just a few snow flakes fall. Toss a few packing beads on to the sheet. As the storm builds up toss more packing beads on until the storm is in full force and tip the whole box onto the sheet. By this time the Joey Scouts will be shaking the sheet violently. The snow is going everywhere. Once the storm is over we get to pick all the snow up. (If you say this in a tone of voice indicating that it will be a fun thing to do the Joey Scouts believe you and happily pick all the snow up.) Only play this once though. Aurora Borealis Snow Jars: Equipment: Straight sided glass jars e.g. Vegemite 400 mls is perfect Black paper or card should be almost as tall as the jar and about 2/3 of the circumference (6 cm x 16cm for 400ml Vegemite jar). White and aurora borealis colours, fluoro green, yellow, pink, violet or blue good quality coloured pencils. If they are not good quality they will not show up on the black. Instructions: Fill the jar with water and sprinkle in glitter (holographic glitter if you can find it looks really good). Screw the lid on tightly Draw an aurora borealis picture on the black paper. There is a photograph of one below. Tape the picture onto the outside of the jar with the picture facing inwards. Shake the jar to see a glitter snowstorm against the background picture.

Aurora Borealis Paintings: This is an alternate art activity to the aurora borealis jars. I found it at

http://funart4kids.blogspot.com/2011/01/aurora‐borealis.html. It was done by slightly older children so I have modified it a bit. You will need to buy the supplies at an art supply shop. Equipment: Watercolour paint Brushes Water colour paper (for mountains) Spray bottle Salt Construction paper or light card, black or purple (night sky) Chalk in pastel colours Paper towel Instructions: 1. Make the mountains.

Spray your watercolour paper with enough water to allow colours to easily blend. Paint the wet paper with the water colour paints using cool colours. Joey Scouts then sprinkle salt over the wet areas. Ice or snow colours are best near the top. Allow the paper to dry.

2. Make templates in the shape of jagged arctic mountains. The template should be the same width as the water colour paper design. Trace along the jagged edge of the template onto the dried water colour paper. Cut along the line you have just traced. This gives you two “mountain” ranges. These two steps need to be done before the meeting.

3. Each Joey Scout Scouts on a dark sheet of construction paper creates their Aurora Borelalis using the chalk. Use 3‐4 different colours. Use a towel to blend the chalk colour. Do not over‐rub it. Then glue your mountains at the bottom of the construction paper.

Are we in Sweden or Australia? Joey Scouts are shown a set of pictures, one by one and asked if they are in Sweden or Australia. Have a map of Sweden at one end of the Scout hall and a map of Australia at the other. Joey Scout s run to which ever map is where they think they are. There will be some items that it will not be possible to tell if they are in Sweden or Australia, in that case the Joey Scouts should stay in the middle. Maps are available at the end of this program. You can collect you own pictures or use the ones provided at the end of this program.
