And Growing!
The Little Lodge
That Does
Big Things!
Greetings from a well traveled Elk: Time waits for no man, not even Elks. We are in the middle of July already. Where has the time gone? In my last letter I left off at the Dog Show. The next major event was Flag Day and, as always, Wendy Turner did a fabulous job. My thanks go out to all those who volunteered from the school children to my officers. A special note of thanks to our Past State President, and our friend, Phil Holowacz, for being our guest speaker. Special recognition goes out to the After Prom Party Committee for another successful event. Fun was had by all. On another note, Deb Valenta has been busy securing several rentals for our Lodge. Perhaps, some of the renters may find our Lodge appealing and want to join us. Hope continues to do a fine job with the Kitchen. A small fryer has been purchased which helps boost our revenue while also providing more variety to our bar menu. “Dancing with the Oldies” continues and keeps our Lodge doors open on available Tuesday evenings. And now for the highlight of my year so far, I am deeply grateful to our Lodge for giving me the opportunity to attend an Elks National Convention. Rita and I were overwhelmed with what we saw with Elks from every state and then some. New York and Texas had the best hospitality rooms. New York sponsored a breakfast and a White Jacket Dinner. Our new District Deputy, John Edinger (aka Dinger) is a great person and will represent us well. Rita and I had a great time getting to know Endicott’s ER, Don Miller, and his wife, Sharon. We also spent time with John and Kathy Gardner and their son. Phil and Sue were also at the convention and everyone was very nice. I will be sharing information from the convention at our next meeting. Again, thank you for the opportunity to represent our Lodge. I am looking forward to future events – Friday Night dinners, chicken barbeques, Carousel Days, Poker Run, Hawaiian Dinners, Murder Mystery, and golf tournaments. Fraternally, Dino Christopher, ER Elk of the Month – Congratulations to Gerri Jurkiw. Gerri generously donated finances and her energy for our very successful Dog Show. Often times, she can also be found taking care of the monies at our Friday night dinners.

The USO Fort Drum is serving record numbers of troops
and families this year with nearly the entire 10th Mountain Division at home station. With record-breaking numbers and nearly 70,000 served in the first half on 2012, we need your help to provide our troops with a home away from home. The USO Fort Drum is seeking donations of snack and candy items to serve troops and families in their 8,000 square foot facility on Fort Drum. On average, the USO sees over 250 people each day in their main Center. While in the USO, troops and families are offered connectivity through internet, computers, and video gaming, drinks and snacks, all free. USO Fort Drum Director Karen Clark said, “Soldiers are embracing the programs and services USO Fort Drum has to offer by the thousands. It is wonderful to be meeting the emotional and social needs of our military community, but we could use some help meeting the snacking needs.” Mrs. Clark said, “USO Fort Drum strives to provide daily snacks in our Main Center, have treats and toiletry bags ready for the Wounded Warriors making their way back to Fort Drum, and serve refreshments at Wheeler Sack Army Airfield for each plane load of Soldiers returning home from Afghanistan. I can’t stress enough how vast our need is for packaged snacks. We do the best we can with what we get donated, but after serving 19,000 patrons in the month of June, our food pantry is almost as bare as Old Mother Hubbard’s cupboard.” Donations can be made by dropping off items to the USO Fort Drum, 10502 S. Riva Ridge Loop, Fort Drum, NY or mailed via USPS to USO Fort Drum, PO Box 454, Fort Drum, NY 13602.

Did You Know?
A column dedicated to keeping us connected with our Lodge brothers and sisters! Did you know Soctt Dow’s wife Michelle is in Human Services? She is passionate about providing support to our working poor. Our lodge has embraced the opportunity to help Catholic Charities Summer Read Program and their Food Pantry. Scott Dow’s wife Michelle is a driving force behind these programs. Michelle welcomed Jerry Smith, Gerri Jurkiw and myself to a tour of the Catholic Charities Food Pantry. We were unaware Catholic Charities offers this type of program. Their pantry is not affiliated with CHOW. We were given stats about the overwhelming need in this country.
• The working “poor” goes without meals.
• The Pantry searches different food banks across the country.
• Catholic Charities buys pallets of food to stock their shelves.
• They focus on nutrional meals.
• We also learned there are pantries like this all across our country.
I was also able to attend Catholic Charities Summer Read Program. The program focuses on encouraging children to continue their reading throughout the summer. When I walked in with books and food, donated by the lodge, there were many, many small helping hands waiting to help.
• A church has donated their kitchen and meeting room for this program.
• The program meets every day. The children are provided lunch.
• I was able to sit and talk with a Mom and her three children. They love the program. The children were so focused on reading. They know they have to study hard so they can go to college and get a good job! When I asked the ten year old what he was reading, he shared his “World of Astronomy” – it was a high school level book! We discussed if Pluto was really a planet or a star!
• Another aspect of this wonderful program included teenagers 13-16. They helped in the kitchen, served the children and provided good role models for the attendees. The teens also “work” to clean up Columbus Park and ensure it is a safe place for the little ones to play!
• At the end of the summer program, if they have attended all the sessions, the children are awarded a backpack filled with supplies for the school year.
I thank Scott’s wife, Michelle for putting a face on hunger. These little ones and their parents are driven to provide a better life through education. Catholic Charities is helping them get there. Submitted by Alicia Beck, Lodge Chaplin Memoriam Please keep Karen Thiel Honnick in your thoughts. Karen’s father passed away. “While we can’t know the sadness you feel, those who care about you know you’ll find daily comfort in your precious memories. Your father has left behind a special love, a love that lasts forever.” Submitted by Alicia Beck, Lodge Chaplin
