8 JOHNS CREEK HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION
The Johns Creek Healthcare Association (JCHA), founded and incorporated in 2006, is a not-for-profit, multi-specialty organization comprised of individuals in the healthcare industry from the Duluth/Suwanee area of Georgia known
as Johns Creek. Our organization includes not only physicians but individuals from every facet
of the care of human beings — nurses, physician assistants, physical therapists, pharmacists, long-term-care providers, chiropractors ... the list goes on. The uniqueness of our group is that it’s community-based but with no single hospital association. That means our reach is immeasurable.
Our organization began with a collection of passionate and committed individuals who believe in the strength of the Johns Creek healthcare community. When compiling their intentions, they wrote this:
The JCHA vision — The Johns Creek Healthcare Association strives to enhance the quality of human life by supporting an environment in which healthcare providers of all specialties can provide the highest quality of care and product.
The JCHA mission — The Johns Creek Healthcare Association shall promote providing the highest level of healthcare and healthcare-related products by encouraging a supportive environment in which healthcare providers and healthcare businesses throughout the Johns Creek community shall interact to: Further education within the membership and the community.Promote health and patient access to quality care. Organize legislatively to ensure that the highest quality of care remains available
in our community, state and country. Organize logistically to ensure that the Johns Creek healthcare community acts
and is regarded as a cohesive entity.Throughout this issue of the Johns Creek Healthcare Association guidebook, and
out in the community, you will see the JCHA logo, just as you see it at the top of this greeting. This logo represents a standard of excellence, our personal commitment to extraordinary care. When you spot the JCHA logo, you can rest assured that you will receive the highest-quality treatment and care from that provider. We encourage you to seek out this logo and choose a JCHA member when you require the very best in healthcare. And, frankly, when do you not?
Johns Creek Healthcare Association is truly a part of your community. Feel confident with us as a part of your life, as well. We look forward to taking care you and your family.
Warm regards,JCHA Board of Directorswww.johnscreekhealthcare.org

FITNESS
Get Up and Move — Yes, Even at WorkBy Oluseun A. Olufade, M.D.
It’s no secret that regular physical activity benefits most adults.
But a national survey shows that on an average day, most of us spend two hours in a sedentary position, about four hours on light physical activity and less than an hour on moderate to vigorous physical activity. We may be doing that just a little backward.
First, let’s define our terms.Sedentary behavior is sitting at
your desk and staring at a computer screen all day, or sitting or lying down and watching television. These are low-energy activities that don’t do much for your health.
A complete exercise prescription
plan, on the other hand, includes activities that target cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness, flexibility and overall fitness.
If your job keeps you cubicle-bound, there are things you can do to minimize the negative effects. For example: Stand up and take computer
breaks every 30 minutes. Take and make phone calls
standing up. Alternate standing breaks with
sitting time during long meetings. Use a headset or speaker phone
while teleconferencing so you can stand up.
12 JOHNS CREEK HEALTHCARE ASSOCIATION
Use a height-adjustable desk so that you can alternate between standing and sitting.
Walk to a colleague’s desk rather than using the phone or sending an email.
If you have chronic or recurrent neck pain, how you hold your head is critical. You’ll know you need improvement if you feel muscle tightness and stiffness.
Sitting at a desk and spending your day on a computer exposes you to awkward and sustained postures that limit your neck’s range of motion.
You’re also more likely to have poor posture — shoulders that round
forward and a chin that leans forward. With exercises done every two or three hours during the workday, you can reduce or eliminate both. Read on for some examples.
wall-standing position
Stand with your spine flat and touching the wall, then tilt your pelvis forward.
Hold the pelvis tilt and touch the wall with your shoulders. Hold this pose for 10 seconds.
Tuck in your chin and lift your head, with your chin still tucked.
While standing, move your neck in all directions. Your shoulder blade should be touching the wall.
freestanding position
Relax your shoulders with your arms resting comfortably on your thighs.
Slowly move your shoulders in large circles, first in a forward direction and then backward (shoulder rolls engage your neck and upper-back muscles and prepare them for activities like prolonged sitting).
balancing balls
Use an exercise ball instead of an office chair to strengthen your abdomen. Sit on the ball and
find a good balancing position.

other exercises
With both palms on your desk or a table, walk back to a 45-degree angle. Do 10-12 push-ups.
With both hands, grab the heaviest book you can find and lift it behind your head, lower it to your neck and repeat 10-12 times.
Imagine there’s a pen between your shoulders. Squeeze the shoulders against the pen and relax. Repeat 10 times (this will help combat the hunched-forward posture).
Face away from your desk. Bend your knees. Place your arms
shoulder-width apart. Bend your arms, then straighten, to put tension on your triceps.
Stand against the wall and slide down so your knees maks a 90-degree angle. Slide back up and repeat 10-12 times.
Hold on to the back of a chair and stand with your feet together. Raise up on your tiptoes to stretch your calves. Hold 10 seconds and repeat.

ALLERGIES
ALLERGIESHow do we hate thee?
Let us count the ways ... and find out how to cope.
By Janet Roberts
Pollen (noun):
1. the fertilizing element of flowering plants, consisting of fine, powdery,
yellowish grains or spores, sometimes in masses. 2. misery.
OK, we editorialized on that second definition. But if you have allergies, you understand why. So does Dr. Lakshmi Reddy, founder of the Reddy Allergy and Asthma
Institute in Johns Creek.“This is the time of
year when tree and grass pollen levels are high,”
she says, adding a soupçon of good news. So far 2016 is
looking like a fairly normal pollen season, she says. “I
haven’t seen anything alarming.”That’s not much comfort to the
30 percent of adults and 40 percent

of children who deal with seasonal sneezes, itchy eyes and more. What is it about pollen that creates this agony?
“Pollen is a foreign substance that you inhale, and, through an antibody, IgE, leads to an immune reaction and a cascade of events, resulting in a release of histamines and other inflammatory mediators,” Reddy says. “This reaction manifests as a runny nose, sneezing, eye itching and tearing.”
Allergy season can be year-round, depending on what triggers a person’s specific allergies. Dust mites and pollen are some of the most common allergens.
“Spring and fall get all the press,” she says. “In Georgia, people who are allergic to tree pollen have felt their allergies kick in already. As we get closer to summer, the grass pollen levels start climbing, and then in fall, you have weeds.”
For those with allergies, the persistent sneezing and nose-blowing is bad enough. But seeing friends and family breeze through a day in the park or a walk in the woods without a sniffle adds insult to injury.
Why do you suffer while so many others seem immune?
“It’s hard to say. Some tendencies are inherited, while others are environmental,” Reddy says. “You have to live through a few seasons before you develop allergies. Children as well as adults can develop them. Most allergies start in childhood but certainly can start at any point in our life.
Most people can start at
any point in our lives.” Allergies tend to begin to develop
from about age 5 through the teen years. As you get older, though, your tendencies to experience allergies start diminishing.”
So, you see, aging can have its pluses.
Meanwhile, says Reddy, you can take to battle to minimize discomfort and maximize your fight against the wheezing and the sneezing and the sinuses that drip, drip, drip.
outdoors
Avoid going outside when the pollen count is high, especially on dry, windy days (rainy days keep the count down). Reddy’s clinic website features a local pollen-

count tracker and an email sign-up for pollen alerts — (reddyallergy.com).
If you must work outside, wear a high-quality face mask.
indoors
Shower at night instead of in the morning. You’ll wash off any pollen that clings to your skin and hair and keep it out of your sheets and off your pillowcases.
Wash bed linens in hot water. Dust weekly. A wet mop or wet
cloths pick up dust and pollen better than dry ones.
Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. The filter traps smaller particles than a standard vacuum filter.
what’s the cure?
Over-the-counter medications won’t cure allergies, Reddy says, but can help you manage your symptoms. When you stop medicating though, the symptoms will return.
She doesn’t endorse specific products or brands but does recommend using antihistamines and nasal steroids.
when to see the doctor
These steps can help many seasonal sneezers survive, but drugstore treatments don’t work for everyone, and some have unpleasant side effects.
If your allergies don’t go away, or worsen to where they interfere with
your life, it’s time to see the doctor. Reddy — who’s board certified in
pediatric and adult allergy, asthma and immunology and completed a two-year fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia — says a doctor’s visit would include a physical exam and a review of treatment plans that might result in allergy immunotherapy. That, she says, is the closest we have to a cure.

Accessibility is the fundamental concept on which our practice, Comprehensive Neurology Specialists, is based. We want to be the most responsive neurology practice in the region. When your primary care doctor tells us you need to be seen as soon as possible… that’s exactly what we do.
We are responsive to your concerns and the concerns your family may have. Here’s an example: Perhaps an older patient and their family need to make some decisions about driving safety. Our new tool, DriveAble, is a test we can use to help us assess how decision making, reflexes and other safe driving skills may be affected. Together, we can use this information to decide whether driving is still a safe activity.
BRING US YOUR NEUROLOGY CONCERNS AND WE WILL SHOW YOU HOW WE CARE.

After 32 year of practicing Optometry, I have had the opportunity to work with many other professionals in the healthcare industry. After almost 10 years, I can honestly say that Milan Eye Center is one of the most professional organizations I have had the pleasure of being associated with. These skilled surgeons operate on patients and DO NOT operate optical dispensaries. The respect for the profession of Optometry is only exceeded by the quality of their surgical services. My patients love using Milan Eye Center and I believe you will also.

The Rise of Nurse Practitioners
& Physician AssistantsThese midlevel pros are changing the way
today’s patients receive careBy Janet Roberts
The next time you visit a doctor’s office, your first medical contact might not be with someone
with an M.D. attached to their name. A physician assistant (PA) or nurse practitioner (NP) might care for you, discuss your health concerns, order tests or write your prescription.
Like many other medical organiza-tions, the member clinics of the Johns Creek Healthcare Association employ NPs and PAs to supplement a doctor’s care, especially in primary care, family medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology.
“Nobody will ever replace the doctors, with their training, knowledge and ability,” says Emily Adams, a Johns Creek Primary Care nurse practitioner who’s certified as an advanced practice registered nurse. “But, there’s a place for midlevel providers to fill gaps in a medical practice, and we are effective in doing that.”
In Georgia, PAs and NPs also are part of a push to extend care in rural areas that lack medical personnel. They’re
largely responsible for increasing access to general medical care.
“We have lots of providers and specialists, but just a couple of counties outside of the Atlanta metro area, people have to drive several hours to visit an endocrinologist or pulmonologist,” Adams says. “That’s where midlevel providers [offering basic medicine] play a big role.”
In days past, patients usually preferred to see a physician, she says. Today, many would rather see an NP or PA because they get more face-to-face time.
These professionals also help practices grow because having them aboard lets medical offices see more patients.
what’s the difference?
The average patient might not distinguish between a physician assistant, a nurse practitioner or a physician. Doctors, of course, attend medical school. NPs begin training as nurses and PAs begin training in any

field — science, business or liberal arts. The other essential difference is
that NPs have physician collaboration and PAs require physician supervision/collaboration.
An NP is a registered nurse who has completed an advanced education (a master’s degree is the minimum) and has been trained in diagnosing and managing common medical conditions, including chronic conditions. Georgia requires NPs to operate with physician oversight, but they can work under their own licenses.
PAs and NPs have the authority
to treat patients in the same manner. They can take medical histories, do physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, develop treatment plans, counsel on preventative care and assist in surgery.
PAs are nationally certified and state-licensed. Getting that license requires a four-year college degree, a specialized training program of about 24 months and a yearlong clinical rotation.
The next time you go to the “doctor,” check out the name tag and credentials. Maybe you’ll have caught NP/AP fever, too.

Patient- and Family-Centered Care Emory Johns Creek Hospital is committed to partnering with patients and their families early in the hospital process, placing a strong focus on individualized care. The hospital’s large, all-private rooms also help make the patient experience more personal. “When patients visit our hospital, they receive exceptional personal attention from our medical staff and the highest quality care available. Our patient- and family-centered model of care ensures the patient’s family participates in all aspects of their family’s care,” says Emory Johns Creek Hospital’s CEO Marilyn Margolis.
Women’s Services From obstetrics to gynecology, breast health to surgical care, Emory Johns Creek Hospital is dedicated to providing women of all stages of life with exceptional health care. Our Center for Breast Care is designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology. Our Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) offers in-house, 24-hour neonatology and anesthesia services. The Emory Women’s Heart Center location on our campus is dedicated to screening, prevention and treatment of heart disease in women.
Bariatric Surgery Emory Johns Creek Hospital is home to the Atlanta Bariatric Center, a designated Center of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery by the Center of Excellence by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Our skilled surgeons have performed more than 5,000 weight loss procedures. Other program highlights include:
• State-of-the-art equipment designed to accommodate weight loss surgery patients in our operating rooms
• Specially designed unit • Specially trained nursing and
support staff
Excellence in Cardiac and Vascular Care The cardiologists at Emory Johns Creek Hospital are committed to providing comprehensive heart and vascular treatment options, including preventive cardiology and the evaluation and management of patients with known or suspected heart disease and/or peripheral vascular disease. The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, equipped with the latest technology, provides a variety of investigative and interventional cardiac procedures including angioplasty and stent placement, delivering, on average, less than 60-minute door-to-balloon times, far below the national goal of 90 minutes. Emory Johns Creek Hospital also is an accredited Chest Pain Center with PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) capabilities.
Achievements and Recognition Emory Johns Creek Hospital is designated by the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center. This means patients receive the highest quality stroke treatments and care available. Emory Johns Creek Hospital achieved Chest Pain Center Accreditation with PCI from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC). Hospitals that receive SCPC accreditation meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in patients who arrive with
symptoms of a heart attack. In February 2014, the hospital was named on the Georgia Hospital Association’s (GHA) quality honor roll for the fifth consecutive year. GHA placed the hospital in Chairman’s Circle, which is the organization’s highest category. “We are delighted by this honor, which confirms the excellent work of our doctors and staff members, who every day make patient care and safety their top priority,” says Margolis.
Community Involvement Emory Johns Creek Hospital places value in serving the community outside the walls of its facility. “The opening of Emory Johns Creek Hospital came three months after Johns Creek became its own city. The partnership of a new hospital, with a new city, is a double rarity in the United States,” says Margolis.
In turn, services at the hospital have grown to meet the growing needs of our community. Margolis says, “Being in the health care business, we want to continue to educate the community on the benefits of preventive medicine. We don’t want to solely be a hospital that takes care of sick people, so we are constantly seeking unique ways to partner with the community to emphasize the importance of staying healthy.”

Snoozing in the Dental Chair
‘Twilight’ or ‘sleep’ dentistry gives the phobic a way to avoid fear and anxiety
By Ushma Patel, D.M.D.
Is twilight dentistry only for chickens? I say no.
Some people, while not at all afraid of dental treatment, are highly resistant to anesthetic. They just can’t get numb. Others simply don’t have time to make repeated dental visits and prefer one longer visit. Twilight dentistry solves both issues.
Finally, there are those for whom
going to the dentist is a trip through hell. The drills, the smells and oh, that awful needle.
Through twilight dentistry, the dentally challenged receive treatment free from all the fear and anxiety. And they likely won’t even remember making the visit at all.
Twilight dentistry, also known as sedation or sleep dentistry, may be at

— or coming to — a dental office near you.
It works quite simply. One hour before your appointment, you take a pill that’s been dispensed to you. By the time you arrive for your appointment, you’re very relaxed.
You’re escorted to a dental chair and gradually progress to a deeper level of sedation, still able to respond to your environment and the dentist’s questions. You will feel no pain.
Your vital signs are monitored constantly throughout treatment. When you wake up, a friend drives you home and, in an hour or so, you’re pretty much back to normal. The best part? You have no bad memories and haven’t experienced any physical or emotional pain.
The patient isn’t “knocked out” or in total sedation as they would be in surgery. The level of sedation is just deep enough so they feel nothing but are still conscious.
Some patients have a deep fear of dental treatment but many others have a deeper fear of being “put under.” This centers around the thought of losing control or being unable to perceive what’s happening around them.
Twilight dentistry seems to be a happy medium. Patients are still under control and understand what’s happening — they just don’t feel anything negative.
Since dental phobics tend to delay dental care — sometimes for years — they usually need a lot of treatment.

Fruits and Vegetables
Naturally low in fat and cholesterol and high in fiber, 4 to 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day (based on a 2,000 calorie diet) can help curb hunger and stave off overeating, while providing your body necessary nutrients. Save money by choosing produce when it’s in season or by buying frozen or canned items.
___ Leafy greens, such as spinach, kale and bok choy – the greener the better___ Fresh fruits such as apples, oranges, pears, bananas, melons and berries ___ Canned fruit in 100% juice, with no syrup___ Canned vegetables low in sodium___ Frozen vegetables without butter or sauces___ Frozen or dried fruit (unsweetened)
Milk, Yogurt and Cheese
In addition to supporting bone health, calcium is involved in the electrical signals that control contraction and relaxation of heart muscle. Dietary guidelines recommend 3 cups per day. ___ Fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk___ Fat-free or low-fat yogurt___ Cheese (3 grams of fat or less per serving)___ Fat-free or low-fat soy milk with calcium
Breads, Cereals and Grains
Avoid refined, white grains and make half of your grain intake whole grains. The recommended daily serving is 6 ounces. For example, 1 slice of bread counts as a daily serving, as well as a 1/2 cup of pasta or rice.
___ 100% whole-wheat bread___ Whole-grain breakfast cereals like oatmeal___ Whole grains such as brown and wild rice, barley, quinoa and bulgur___ Whole-wheat or whole-grain pasta
Lean Poultry, Meat and Seafood
Proteins are the building blocks for bone, cartilage, skin and muscle – like your heart. Eat 3 to 6 ounces of lean meat or choose from other protein sources, such as beans, lentils, nuts and seeds.
___ Seafood, including fish and shellfish___ Chicken and turkey breasts without skin___ Pork: leg, shoulder or tenderloin___ Beef: round, sirloin, tenderloin or extra-lean ground beef___ Beans, lentils and peas___ Eggs and egg substitutes___ Nuts and seeds
Fats and Oils
Look for products with no trans fats and cut back on saturated fats. Even healthier choices, such as olive oil, can undo a healthy diet if overused. The recommended daily allowance is 2 to 3 1-ounce servings.
___ Margarine and spreads (soft, tub or liquid) with no trans fats___ Vegetable oil (canola, olive, peanut or sesame)___ Non-stick cooking spray___ Light or fat-free salad dressing and mayonnaise
