JimHively-SystemsSalesPackagingoutofChicago-acquiredthisprojectthroughhisinvestigationintoExcelerateLabs,anacceleratorprogramforstart-upsthatrecentlycametoChicago.BabbaCo,foundedbyJessicaKim,wasacceptedintothesummer2011session,andwasuniqueinbeingoneoftheonlycompaniestoprovideaphysicalproducttoconsumers. BabbaCowasformedin2007asanonlinestoreforbabyproducts.WithheracceptanceintotheExcelerateprogram,KimmovedhereffortstofocusonthecreationoftheBabbaBox,whichlaunchedofficiallyinAugustof2011.TheBabbaBoxisamonthlysubscriptionservicethatprovidesthemedactivitiesgearedforchildrenages3-6.Itaimstoprovideparentsatooltointeractivelyteachtheirchildrenwhilehelpingthemexploretheworldaroundthem.Eachboxhasfourcomponents–Create,Explore,StoryTellandConnect-thatallfollowthethemeofthemonth.Theboxpicturedaboveistheir“GratitudeBox.”Theactivitiesincludedteachchildrenaboutbeingthankful,andabouttheimportanceofgivingthanks. Thechallengepresentedtotheteamwastodesignashippableboxthatwouldprovideawaytodividespaceintosectionstohousethefourdifferentandvaryingcomponents.Toaddtothechallenge,atthetimewhenthexpedxdesignteamwasapproachedabouttheproject,Kimhadonlyestablishedonemonthofactivities;thoughthemeshadbeen

established,thespecificactivitiesandcomponentitemswerestilltentative.ThispromptedseveraldiscussionswithKiminwhichthedesignteamwasabletomarrytheprocessofestablishingthedesigndirectionwiththeprocessofestablishingthevisionandlimitationsofKim’sBabbaBoxmovingforward.Theprocesswasrewardingforbothdesignersandcustomer,asthedesignerswereabletogivecriticalinputtothedecisionsoftheinitiallaunchofanewproduct,andthecustomerfelttheyweregivennecessaryandinformeddirection. FrancoDiTerlizzitookleadontheproject,andafterexploringvariousoptions,providedthesolutionofarolled-endoutercartonwithaninsertthatcouldbeusedtodividethespaceintothreesectionsintwovariations,dependingonhowtheinsertisassembled.ThedecisionwasmadetocombinetheStoryTellandConnectcomponents,afterdeterminingthatStoryTellwasalwaysgoingtobeintheformofasinglebook,andthatConnectwasgoingtobeaCDatmost,whilegenerallycomingintheformofagraphicallyembellishedcardwithalinktocompletetheactivityonline. Inadditiontothissolutionxpedxalsosuppliedthemwithaplasticbag,aswellascustomizedstickersandtissuepaper,bothfeaturingtheBabbaCologo. SincetheBabbaBoxwasanewconceptcomingfromarelativelynewcompany,thedesignerswerealsoprovidedagreatopportunitytocreategraphics.Usingtheexistinglogoandbrandcolors,DiTerlizzicreatedthegraphicstoadorntheoutsideofthebox. Kimwasexcitedateverystepoftheprocess,asthexpedxteam-salesanddesigntogether-wereavailableandwillingtohelptheburgeoningcompanynavigatetheprocessofbringingvisiontofruition.Thoughthereweremanyhurtlesalongtheway,thecustomerwaslefthappywiththeversatilesolutionthedesignteamwasabletoprovide.

The Body Shop Gets a MakeoverContributed by Amanda Guthrie

SalesrepPhilipFreemanoutofMorrisville,NCreachedouttoAtlanta’sdesigncentertodevelopacustomsolutionforabeautyproductssuppliercalledTheBodyShop.TheBodyShopwasfoundedin1967byAnitaRoddickandsincebecomingpartofL’Oréalcorporate,hasgrowntoincludeanonlinestoreand2,400retaillocationsacross61countries. xpedxhasnowworkedwithL’Oréaltoproduceamultitudeofhigh-endretailpackaginganddisplaysolutionsforTheBodyShop.TheprojectthatopenedthedoortothiscontinuedrelationshipwastheBeautyBox.ThechallengepresentedbyL’Oréalwastodevelopaninteractivekittolaunchanew,highprofilelineofnaturalcosmeticsthatcouldholdanassortmentofEVMitems,whileinstructingtheconsumerofallthebenefitsacrosstherangeofcosmeticsavailableintheproductline. Thischallengepresentedkeyissuessuchastheneedforamplegraphicspaceandtheneedforamodularsolutiontopresentachangingassortmentofproductsinacleanandimpressivefashion.

ThexpedxdesignteampresentedasolutionthatprovidedatoolforTheBodyShoptoengageconsumersinchoosinganysizeorshadevariationoftheproductswithinthenewproductlineintheassemblyofakitthatwaspersonallycustomizedtotheirownneedsandpreferences. TheBeautyBoxutilizesaonepiece.018SBSdesignthatfoldspresentstheitemsinabookstylepresentation.Panelsfoldopenlikeabookcovertorevealashoulderedvoidthatholdsavac-formedPETtrayintowhichtheselectedproductsareplaced.The

trayhascavitiesdesignedtoclaspthevarietyofproductsavailabletotheconsumeranditholdseachcombinationinanelegantandbalancedpresentation.Thebookstylepanelsdisplaythegraphicinformationthatinformstheconsumerabouttheproductline,anditusesVelcrodotstokeepthepanelsclosedduringtransportation.xpedxhandledalldesignareasofthekitsfromconcepttocompletion,fromstructuraldesigntoartworklayout. TheapproveddesignwasmanufacturedsourcingFitzPakandShorewoodasvendors.TheywereassembledbyxpedxfordistributioninNorthAmerica,CanadaandMexico;20,000kitsweremanufacturedinthreelanguages.xpedxalsocreatedandsourcedseveralthousandingredient,extended-contentlabelsfortheprimarycosmeticcontainers. Sinceachievingsuccesswiththisproject,xpedxhasalsoprovideddesignandkittingservicesforacombinationPOPfloordisplayandonlinepromotionalBlackFridaysale,aswellasaseriesofkitsfortheSephoralineofskincareproducts.

Pallet System for Coca-Cola FreestyleContributed by Johnna Calvillo

Coca-ColahasrecentlylaunchedanewsodadispensingsystemtheycallFreestyle®andiscurrentlyexecutingthedistributionofthisnewsodafountaintoagrowingvarietyoflocationsacrosstheU.S.andinternationally.Coca-ColaboaststhattheFreestyle®allowsuserstocreatetheirowncustombeveragesbychoosingfromacombinationofover120differentCoca-Colabrandproductswiththeuseofatouchscreeninterface.Oncetheusermakeshis/herselections,Freestyle®dispensesthecustomconcoctionneatlyfromonesinglevalve. Freestyle®hasbeenanoverwhelmingsuccessforCoca-Colasofar.Youngergenerationsareexcitedbythenewwaysofinteractingwiththemachinethatarenotofferedbystandarddispensers,andthenewlookissleekandmodern.However,theyhaveencounteredmanyissuesinthedistribution,transportationandinstallationprocesses. Freestyle®weighsover800lbs,mostofthisweightresidinginthetophalfofthemachine,itrestsonfourlegsandhasalargercircumferenceatthetopofthemachinethanthebottom.Thesearethemajorcontributingfactorsthathavepresentedissuesinthemanufacturing,handlingandshippingprocesses. Thesystemcurrentlyinplacerequiresthemachinetobetransferredbetweentwopalletsduringthemanufacturingprocess.Thesecondarypalletutilizedduringshippingisamoldedplasticdesignwithcavitiesforeachofthefourlegs.

TwoplasticU-shapedsheetsarethensnappedintoplacearoundthebrimofthepallet,heldtogetherbyaplasticlidandsmalllocks.Thissystemisproblematicforseveralreasons.Foremost,themachineonlyrestswithinthepallet,itisnotsecuredinplace.Thishasledtotheunitsbecomingfreefromthepalletduringshippingandfrequentlytippingover.Secondly,theplasticshroudiseasilydisplaced.Also,theassemblyeasilyseparatesbecausethelocksthatholdtheplasticshroudandlidtogetherarenotdesignedtoenduretheforcesthataregeneratedduringdistribution. TheChicagodesignteamcameupwithseveralconceptstoaddresstheseproblems.Thefinaliterationfeaturesatrisectionmoldedpallet(picturedbelow)whichresolvesmultipleissueswithoneelement.Thesectionslockintoplaceusingtwopinsthatruntheentirelengthofthepalletandsecurethemachinetothepallet.Thisincreasesstability,decreasingthepossibilityoftheunitstippingover.Italsoprovidesasolutionforeaseofinstallation.Thetwoouterportionscanberemovedjustpriortoinstallationonsite.Themiddlesectionisdesignedtoallowforapalletjacktosafelyliftthemachine,andonceinplace,lowerthemiddlesectionofthepalletjustfarenoughtoclearthebottomofthemachine. ThetopcapisfittedwithPEfoaminsertsthatensureatightfitaroundthetopofthemachinewhileprotectingitfrombuffingandscratching.Thecap,machineandpalletarefirmlyheldtogetherusingaproprietarystrapsystemwhichinterweavesthroughfeaturesinthepalletandcap. ThissystempresentsasolutiontoeliminatetheincidentsCoca-Colaisexperiencingwiththeircurrentsystem,whileprovidingtheaddedbenefitsofaneasyandsafeinstallationprocesswithacompletelyreusablesystem.WeareexcitedaboutoursolutionandthisopportunitywithCoca-Cola.Theyarecurrentlyinthetestingphaseofthisprogramand,atpresstime,avendordecision.

Electronics Industry : Packaging Re-designconcept sketch • Context: Prominent camera-maker exploring innovative ways to showcase a cutting-edge product

• Directive: Propose a variation on existing packaing as well as a completely new and different solution, must retain 360º view of the product• Concepts Developed: 1. Injection molded plastic casing in the shape of a sphere to speak to the versatile and unique traits of the product 2. Ship-flat plastic assembly including a corrugated insert to create platform for camera as a variation on current packaging • Result: Concepts will be presented to the client in July 2013
