By Paul Feinberg 10/07/2015 When UCLA Anderson and Coach John Wooden jointly established the John Wooden Global Leadership Program and the associated Global Leadership Award, it was the Anderson students whose values emulated his own views 16 students from Anderson’s full-time, fully employed, and executive MBA programs earned Wooden Fellowships thanks to the proceeds from the annual event and the generous support. Last night, four new names were added to this illustrious group. They are Dr. Rob Douk (GEMBA ’16), Virginia Tancioco Cantrell (FEMBA ’16). John Wooden Global Leadership Fellows Recognized for an Extraordinary Range Virginia Tancioco, Rob Douk The presentation of the 2015 John Wooden Fellowships included a video featuring Anderson Senior Associate Dean Al Osborne with all four fellowship recipients. Later on at the gala, Xerox Chairman and CEO Ursula Burns received the 2015 John Wooden Global Leadership Award. The evening opened with drumming by UCLA’s student-run taiko drum ensemble Yukai Daiko and “New York State of Mind.” of Behavioral Health Works, a company focused on treating severe autism. In his role as CEO, Douk retrains psychologists and o aid the more than 300 psychologists he works with, Douk developed ClinicSoft, a software program that tracks case development and issues reports. “There’s one word that fuels why Coach Wooden was so inspirational and it’s right at the top of his Pyramid: faith,” said Douk. “I try to maximize faith over fear.” “Coach Wooden inspired me by the way his teams worked together,” said Tancioco. In 2006, she joined AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps and has been helping underserved communities ever since. Tancioco’s experiences are myriad, ranging from teaching English as a second language in Ecuador, to working as an emergency medical technician in Oakland, to traveling around the globe as a health professional – even performing surgery – in South Sudan, Haiti and Malawi. The entire app is written at a fourth grade reading level because they believe that since pregnancy isn’t limited to those who are highly educated, information shouldn’t be either. “I challenge all of you to better the team so we can all be successful.” Dunbar is a U.S. Navy Captain and Deputy Commander in the Naval Special Warfare Center, training all West Coast SEAL teams. He has served on active duty for 22 years and been deployed nearly a dozen times. Dunbar has executed a range of responsibilities with the Navy, from leading Special Operations to managing corporate policy. He holds advanced degrees in space systems operations and unconventional warfare. After he completes his Executive MBA, he plans to pursue his new consultancy, which helps professional sports teams prevent negative behavior such as sexual assault and domestic violence. Said Dunbar of Coach Wooden, “It’s important to follow not just his leadership, but his entire life and to make the decision that it’s on us to lead social change.” As director of program development at Dignity Health St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California, Cantrell designs health programs both for the hospital and the greater Long Beach community. The programs she designs expand services in seven clinics impossible to not be touched by leadership philosophy of Coach Wooden. He said, ‘You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.’ These words inspire me every day.”
