John Woodbridge and Eric Fraser
My late husband, John Woodbridge, as a young art student
studying at Kingston School of Art helped paint the Eric Fraser
mural which appeared in the “Origins of the Peoples” pavilion
at the Festival. My husband was a friend of Eric Fraser’s son,
Geoffrey, and an admirer of Eric Fraser’s work, particularly his
pen and ink illustrations which appeared frequently in and on
the front cover of the Radio Times from the mid 1920s
onwards. My husband was proud to be involved in painting the
mural for the Festival. He went on to become a commercial
artist himself, most notably creating the design and layout and
much of the art work for the gardening “Expert” series of books
written by D.G. Hessayon.

I enclose a copy of two pages from a booklet entitled “Eric
Fraser A n Illustrator of our time” which accompanied an
exhibition of Eric Fraser’s work on a tour of Great Britain from
1991-1993, showing the mural and 6 photos of my husband,
Eric Fraser and another student working on it. I think it is
interesting to note from the text how Guinness and Mr Therm,
the gas industry’s logo which Eric Fraser created in 1931, took
the opportunity to promote themselves while supporting the
Festival.
