And the reason I believe this, is because Jesus prayed – often. Luke 5:16 says, “He himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.” Because, as someone once wrote, “The value of consistent prayer is not that God will hear us, but that we will hear God.” And because his disciples saw how critical prayer was for Jesus, they wanted to learn how to pray. So Jesus shared with them what we now call The Lord’s Prayer. Recently, at the 10:30 service, we have begun to stand, come together to hold hands in community with one each other, and sing a beautiful version of this prayer. And it is a way of making us think about it in a new and special way. Too often I think we say this prayer, but we don’t really pray it. Author Philip Yancey, in his book, “Prayer, Does It Make Any Difference?” shares how he finds meaning in The Lord’s Prayer by slowing down, taking a look at each phrase and applying it to his life. Let me share his thoughts with you. Our Father, who art in heaven – “Father,” an endearing term of relationship. The perfect Father! Remind me also that you live and reign, not in heaven only, but all around me and in my life. Make me aware of your active presence all day, in all my undertakings and in the people I meet. Hallowed be your name – How can I recognize you – in the splendor of nature, in the odd mix of people I meet, in the still voice that calls me to be more like you? May I ‘hallow’ what lies before me, by consciously referring it to you, and also honor your perfection, your holiness, by seeking to become more like you. Your kingdom come – Allow me to be an agent of that kingdom by bringing peace to the anxious, grace to the needy, and your love to all whom I touch. May people believe in your goodness because of how I live today. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven – I see that ‘will’ most clearly in Jesus, who healed the sick and comforted the grieving, who lifted up the downtrodden, who stood always for life and not death, for hope and not despair, for freedom and not bondage. He lived out heaven’s will on earth. Help me be like Jesus. Give us this day our daily bread – We have no guarantee of a day beyond this one. May I trust you for what I need today, nourishment for both body and soul, and not worry about future needs and wants. And may I also be ever responsive to those who lack bread today. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors – Remind me of my true state, as a debtor who owes you, but who can never buy my way into your favor. Thank you God, I do not have to. Grant me the same attitude of forgiving grace toward those who owe me, and who have wronged me, that you show toward me. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil – Let me not slide mindlessly into temptation or toward evil today. Make me alert to and strong to resist them. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. That says it all ! As we continue in our Lenten season, striving to be more like Jesus Christ, let us look anew at this prayer he taught us, as we pray it and sing it and mean it! Pastor Rebecca

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us

to pray.’ Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say… Luke 11:1-2

As I’m sure you can tell by now, I believe prayer to be one of the most important and meaningful aspects of our relationship with God. And the reason I believe this, is because Jesus prayed – often. Luke 5:16 says, “He himself

would often slip away to the wilderness and pray.” Because, as someone once wrote, “The value of consistent prayer is not that God will hear us, but that we will hear God.” And because his disciples saw how critical prayer was for Jesus, they wanted to learn how to pray.

That says it all!

As we continue in our Lenten season, striving to be more like Jesus Christ, let us look anew at this prayer he taught

us, as we pray it and sing it and mean it! Pastor Rebecca

It will begin and end with a brief service. Guidelines, snacks, coffee, and drinks will be provided. Daily Bread Devotionals are available in the narthex to guide you in your daily time with God during this Lenten season. They are free and offer scripture, short reading, and a prayer.

Lenten Series The "Soup for the Soul" Lenten series is underway. This is an opportunity to set aside one hour a week for worship and fellowship during the Lenten season. Each Wednesday at noon there will be a 1/2 hour service, with hymns and a brief meditation, given by a different community clergy person each week. Following the service, soup will be the meal served, as a reminder that in Lent we seek the simple, the plain, the sacrificial, in our walk with Christ during this holy season. All are encouraged to give Christ the gift of your time and worship, and give yourself an opportunity to spiritual growth. The speakers for series are as follows:

March 4th—Nell Fields, Waquoit Congregational Church March 11th—Carl Evans, Christ Lutheran Church March 18th—Patty Barrett, Falmouth Episcopal Church March 25th—Deborah Warner, Church of the Messiah April 1st—Sally Miller, Chaplain, Falmouth Hospital

Vision 20/20 The word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai

saying, "These people say the time has not yet come to

rebuild the Lord's house. Is it a time for you yourselves

to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in

ruin? Consider how you have fared! Go up to the hills

and bring wood and build the house, so that I may take

pleasure in it and be honored." Haggai 1:1-4,7-8

Vision 20/20 is the preliminary new name of our visioning project that so many of you took the time and contributed to with your thoughts and comments and ideas at our meetings last fall. Now, the time has come for us to take the next steps toward implementing the vision God is giving us. Because, remember, the Bible tells us, "Without a vision the people perish."

The first step, of course, is to prayerfully discern and lay out exactly what that vision is. This will require putting together leadership teams as we move forward to expand and strengthen, to "rebuild the lord's house" known as John Wesley. It means fresh and energized thinking, focusing, structuring how we can be the most effective church we can be for God. We'll be looking at a number of things ranging from growing in our faith and spirituality, to ways of reaching out to the community and new families and young people, to the updating and modernization of our facilities and physical plant. And we'll be needing the input and expertise of a number of people. I have some thoughts and ideas based on your input from the fall meetings, and if you're interested in serving on one of the teams, please let me know. I think it's important to keep in mind that this will be no small undertaking. It will be, so to speak, an uphill climb. John Wesley has been a vibrant Body of Christ for more than a half-century. And the challenges we face as we move forward into the next fifty years, especially in light of today's culture, are many. So it's going to require that we take some bold steps and make some genuine commitments in order to fulfill our vision. As your pastor, let me assure you that I am willing to "go up to the hills and bring wood and build a house" that our awesome God can take pleasure in, and be honored. Are you with me? Several members have already committed to this challenge, I hope you will also! I’ll be updating you again in April as Vision 20/20 gains traction and together we put in place the organizational foundation to move forward.

This Lenten curriculum runs each Sunday during Lent with lessons and activities. Our children will be coming away with a better understanding of what Lent means!

Please see our bulletin board of information. We will be culminating our Lenten Journey with a special prayer for you on Easter Sunday. (copies available)

Our children will be taking up the cause for “Imagine No Malaria.” Each Sunday after both services we will be collecting to help out wipe out this terrible disease. Together we can help to K.I.S.S. Malaria goodbye. Please see our bulletin board with information.

There is a lot to be accomplished this Lenten Season!

We Need Your Email Addresses! We have set up a new database which will help us to better communicate with you about upcoming events here at the church and important information we think you should know about. To accomplish that, we need your most recent email address. If you did not receive a recent email about the Ash Wednesday service, then we don’t have a working email address for you. Please supply that to Laura if you would like to be included in our All Church Emails. You can email her at [email protected] or call the office—508-548-3050.

Sub Fundraiser Brings in Over $900

To encourage spiritual growth and develop a habit of serving others, our Youth Group is planning a Winter Retreat and Summer Mission Trip this year. Last month, we held a Sub Fundraiser to earn money for these trips and our congregation showed its support by eating lots and lots of tasty sandwiches. The fundraiser was a huge success and we raised $931 for our youth. Thank you to everyone who ordered a sub or donated money, your support for our youth is evident and greatly appreciated. And a big thank you goes to Larry and Karyn Briggs for running the kitchen! Winter Retreat

Our Winter Retreat is set for March 6-8. Our youth will be traveling to Camp Calumet in West Ossipee, NH for a weekend of devotions and winter fun. We will be joining youth from around New England for campfires, sledding, broomball, ice cream, worship and devotions. Saturday afternoon, we will even take a trip over to King Pine Ski Resort for some skiing, tubing and ice skating. On Sunday, we will travel back to Falmouth, stopping at a United Methodist Church in Concord, NH for their 10:30 worship service. It is sure to be a fun weekend, and one that will help our youth to growth and mature in their walk with Christ. If you want to learn more about what we did at our Winter Retreat, ask one of our youth! Laser Tag - Friday, March 20th

After a weekend of quiet reflection in the wilderness of New Hampshire, our youth will be ready to run around a blacklight room filled with blinking neon lights zapping each other with laser beams. And that is exactly what we are going to do. We will meet after school at the church and carpool up to Lazer Runner in Hyannis for their Friday Night Madness. Afterwards, we will grab some pizza and discuss the epicness of our laser battles. Cost is $15 dollars per youth and includes transportation, dinner and laser tag fees. Chaperones and drivers eat for free. Candy Donations

As Lent draws to an end and we prepare for Easter, please keep your eyes peeled for our candy donation boxes. Starting March 8th we will take donations of individually wrapped pieces of candy that can fit inside of an Easter Egg. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt will then take place on Saturday, April 4th. Thank you in advance for your sweet donations that makes this great community event possible. Easter Egg Stuffing - Sunday, March 29th

Our youth be stuffing Easter Eggs on March 29th from 4-6pm. This is a time for fun, music and pizza as we prepare for our Easter Celebrations. Many hands make light work, so youth should plan on showing up and helping out. Last year we stuffed over 1,000 eggs!

Easter Egg Hunt - April 4th

Save the date for our annual Community Easter Egg Hunt for the morning of Saturday April 4th at 10am. We always have lots of eggs, so bring friends to this family friendly event. Kids from toddlers up to 4th graders are welcome to hunt for eggs. Our Youth Group will be hiding the eggs as well as helping the younger kids find enough eggs. Please bring a basket to hold all your eggs.

New Paint in the Youth Room

If you haven’t visited the Youth Room lately, you should. There is a new coat of paint on the walls and the floor. Special thanks goes to Ben Harden and Tom Griffin, two of our Bike Lab volunteers that put in quite a few hours making the Youth Room / Bike Lab look much better!

Lawrence Build-A-Bike

Our Morse Pond Build-A-Bike went so well that we decided to hold another one with the kids from Lawrence. Most Tuesdays in March you will find a handful of Lawrence School students down in the Bike Lab learning advanced mechanic skills while building a bicycle from the frame up. Volunteers from Americorp Cape Cod have partnered with the church to make this program possible.

Bike Lab Video Club

Our Video Club continues to meet on Mondays. They are now trained on two different types of cameras and just about ready to begin filming of their instructional bicycle videos. Keep an eye on the bulletin and newsletter so you can be present for the premiere.

Easter Garden This year Easter is April 5th. Our Easter Lilies and other flowers will add to an inspiring service. If you wish to purchase a plant in memory or in honor of a loved one, please fill out the form below and put it in the offering plate or bring it to the church office. The cost is $10 per plant. Worship During Lent, you will see candles on the altar. Each Wednesday these will be lit in memory of the 21 Egyptian Christians who were beheaded because they refused to denounce their Christian faith. These men stood up to the terrorists, and gave the ultimate sacrifice for Christ – their lives. In this season where we remember that Christ made that ultimate sacrifice and died for us, let us ask ourselves, what would we have done if we had been in these men’s shoes? And let us keep their families in our prayers.

Healing Service. Sunday, March 15th at both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. During Lent, we are encouraged to look at the dis-ease in our lives, and to see where we need change, healing and the wholeness God offers us. This can be physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, or a combination. Approximately twenty percent of the Gospel stories are devoted to Jesus’ healing. And that is good news for us because healing is something we all need at some point, or in truth, many times in our lives. Through the ages, the Church has offered services where healing is preached, prayers are offered, and those who wish may receive an anointing of holy oil. We believe that God works through medicine, physicians, and psycho-therapy. But we also trust that God works through prayer, through grace and through opening ourselves to His healing touch. This is a normal worship service, but you will be invited to come forward, if you wish, and have the sign of the cross placed on your forehead with the holy oil. If you have questions, see Pastor Rebecca.

Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, March 29th. On this day, we will have a special Passion Drama, with our choir and others reenacting events leading up to and including Christ’s death. This will be a very meaningful service, and because this story is so important to be told – we will hold one service at 10:30. There will be no 8:30 service this day! The Passion drama will include song, prayer, Communion and more.

Thursday, April 2nd will be our Maundy Thursday service at 7pm. This is a solemn service, where we will remember Christ’s death, and be encouraged to place our own nails in the cross. Good Friday, April 3rd - the Chapel and Sanctuary will be open for prayer and meditation. Saturday, April 4th – will be our community Easter Egg Hunt sponsored by our Sunday School and Youth Group. For all kids ages toddlers to 4th grade beginning at 10:00am. Easter Sunday, April 5th – we will have our Sunrise service at Nobska Light at 6:00am with the Church of the Messiah. Then we will have our 8:30 and 10:30 services, both to be held in the sanctuary.

More information will be coming, but mark your calendars for these Holy Week events!

THE CHURCH MOUSE

Well, its me again. Your favorite church mouse. What a winter! It's like fifty shades of white out there! It's been so snowy and cold that I actually invited a couple of local alley cats inside the church just so I could snuggle up and keep warm with them. Desperate times require desperate measures!

Whew! Did we move a lot of snow around here. Many, many, thanks to Tim Leonard especially, but also to John Loewen, Jeremy, and John M. for all the shoveling they did. And of course we can't forget Jim Cardoza. The pastor has put him in charge of changing the signage, and he's had to trek out through all that snow in order to change the wording on the sign... worship times, Food for the Soul, Falmouth Eats, Old Time Gospel Night, and more. Try taking all those individual letters and fitting them onto the sign with the wind blowing and snow whipping with no gloves on! Actually, one time I thought I saw him slip and disappear, and I thought we lost him. But like the good Lord, Jim always rises to the occasion!

Ladies! Do the trustees have a wonderful surprise for you! Spanking new "high-boy" toilets. They're so nice and pretty and comfortable you may want to bring a magazine and stay for a while on your next visit. (Unless you're on the payroll.) Regretfully, in order to pay for the toilets, Pastor Rebecca is cutting back on the toilet paper. Everyone will be rationed to just two sheets per visit. Good luck with that! Or, I guess you can bring your own.

Kudos to everybody who supported the youth group by buying sub sandwiches. They raised over $931 for their ski retreat and mission trip. And thanks to the Briggs and VanMooys for helping the kids out. So many people wanted to buy sandwiches that we actually ran out of bread. But fortunately, there were lots of crumbs left behind for me. I ate for days! Can we please have more of these type events Jeremy! I don't ride a bike!

Coffee hour has been going splendidly recently! Thank you everyone. But just for your information, let's heavy up on the crackers and cheese. See you next month.

Serving God Here I am, Lord, here to serve You. Please advise me what I should do

To serve You faithfully today, Who needs help and for whom to pray.

So, guide me in Your righteous ways. To You I give my thanks and praise.

For, all I have I owe to You. Without Your love to see me through

Life would be meaningless for me, Like a ship which is lost at sea.

Forever traveling in vain, Nothing to lose…nothing to gain.

So, help me, Lord, Your word to share. If one needs help, I will be there. With prayer, I’ll do my very best

And know that You will do the rest.
