Our bid secured £125,000 allowing us to redevelop our English teaching block. Vertical tutoring, which happens for the first 25 minutes every day with a Form Tutor, has been successful over the past few years but putting all year groups together has restricted which topics can be covered with all students at tutor time. There will still be the same House system from September and we will just change vertical tutoring to: Half the tutor groups will be a mix of lower school students (Years 7, 8 and 9) Half the tutor groups will be a mix of upper school groups (Years 10 and 11) Although this is not a radical change (and will have no impact on lessons) it will mean a change in students’ day by day routine. Changes in the Special Education Needs Department It has been a pleasure, and privilege, to be SENCO at John Spendluffe since the introduction of the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice in 1994. On 19 May Year 7 & Year 9 Rounders teams went to Horncastle Grammar School for the annual Tournament. The Y7s played some terrific games, fielding well and closing each team down to stop them scoring.

The Year 9 team drew with Skegness Grammar, beat Banovallum 6 rounders to ½, beat QEGS Alford 1 ½ to 1 rounder and again beat QEGS Horncastle 6 rounders to 5. This gave us an overall win of the Tournament coming in at 1st place.

On 21 May Year 8 (opposite) and Year 10 took part in the second of the Coastal Rounders Tournaments, at Horncastle. Y10s played some excellent rounders and had some tough opposition; coming 4th overall.

The Year 8 Rounders team had an outstanding evening, starting with a win against Skegness Grammar, not letting them score and getting seven

players out, scoring 5 ½ to 0. They lost to QEGS Horncastle but fielded very well, going on to play Banovallum winning 7 to 4½ and then drawing with QEGS Alford 4 rounders each. Overall the Year 8 team came 2nd after the final score coming down to rounders scored in total.

Miss Vickers organised the annual Y9 trip to this festival of our county. As usual students and staff had a great day sampling the best Lincolnshire has to offer in terms of its food, culture, industry and sport.

The weather was fine, the crowds were out, the livestock was washed and cleaned, and the whole place buzzed with noise. It could only be the Lincolnshire Show.

To help mark the commemoration of the

100th anniversary of

the outbreak of the First World War, Year

8s took part in a full day’s artefact based presentation

by Mr Spooner from Skylark Battlefield Tours. Students learnt

about life for the British Tommy

fighting in the trenches.

Students got to handle several

hundred original artefacts from the period. Each artefact was

demonstrated and explained in

context to a soldier’s life on the front line in an exciting

demonstration.

In the afternoon students

handled these objects in smaller groups, feeling the

weight of a Lee Enfield rifle, looking through the scope of

a Vickers Machine gun and

reading the letters from the nurses who looked after the

injured in the field dressing stations.

We are delighted to announce that JSTC

will continue its

commemorations through a school visit

to Northern France and Belgium on the 28-30 March

2015. Students will have the opportunity to walk the battlefields

first hand, visiting many famous

sites such as Zonnebeke Museum and underground dugout,

Passchendale and the Menin Gate Ceremony.

For details please see Miss Myers.

Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award BRONZE

East Midlands Archery Society - Double 1440 (Fita Star) Archery Competition

It was held at the Washingborough Playing Fields and hosted by Lincoln Archers and was a World Record Status Tournament. His previous score when shooting a Metric 3 (50m, 40m, 30m and 20m) was 1064. He scored 1129 on Saturday and 1179

on Sunday; when he also shot as part of the Lincolnshire Junior County Archery Team and they won against Nottinghamshire. He qualified for the National Junior Outdoor Championships at Lilleshall National Sports Centre. Well done Louis!

Louis Perkins, a member of The Louth and District (Disabled) Archery Club, came first in the Junior Gents

Recurve section of the East Midlands Archery Competition, beating his personal best twice.

Technology Challenges

The JSTC Technology Challenges have seen pupils from Alford, Mablethorpe, Huttoft, Sutton, Withern, Partney, Willoughby, Theddlethorpe and Saltfleetby Primary Schools take part. The events have grown throughout the year with over 200 children participating in the most recent challenge. We are planning

another one to run in the Autumn Term.

The JSTC Student Council are always on hand to help provide an enjoyable experience for our

visitors; helping local primary schools throughout the series of Technology Challenges. The Student Council have participated in numerous activities including fundraising events and are currently working on projects to fulfil our International School status. Well done for all their hard work, commitment and continued support.

The Sanderson sisters, Laura (Year 11) and Emily (Year 9), represented JSTC

recently in the competition’s 1 metre and 1.10 metre classes on their ponies

Banner Moonlight and Lenny Kravitz. A strong field of 37 competitors lined up

for the 1 metre class, representing schools from as far afield as Shropshire,

Suffolk and Bedfordshire. Laura and Emily both jumped the course confidently,

achieving clear rounds and finishing in 4th and 3rd places respectively.

The competition then moved to the advanced open 1.10 metre category. Emily was

the first to ride, jumping a clear and fast round to set the standard for the following

riders to beat. Laura also jumped a fast round, but was unlucky to finish on 8

penalties after knocking down two fences.

Laura's performance was good enough to earn her a second 4th place rosette of the

day, with Emily winning the 1st place rosette and sash. Emily's performance also

won her a coveted place at the NSEA National Championships to be held at

Addington Manor in October.

The second day in early May, gave our Year 7 More Able and Talented Express Stream students the chance to produce their very own school Newspaper. They learned how to interview, edit and photograph for articles and after a very close vote, Zak Rowan’s story went on the front page. All students were impeccably behaved and it was a great way for students to work together on a creative project.

JSTC hosted 2 newspaper days, with the help of the team at Lincoln University School of Journalism. In March five local primaries were invited to join some of our Year 8 More Able and Talented students to produce a fabulous joint newspaper, named High Five! Each school received 300 copies and we were really impressed by the enthusiasm and quality of stories that came from our feeder primary schools;

In April our Year 10 Baccalaureate students visited Lincoln University for an Aspiration Day. Students took part in lectures from Student Ambassadors, took a campus tour of the facilities and spent some time in the Sports Area of campus. All our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and feedback suggested that students who had been unsure about their future, now feel that University would be a great experience for them!
