Genealogy research is at best a soft science. It is an effort to compile family anecdotalstories, census records, wills, obituaries, deeds and just about any piece of informationavailable. There often sight variations in the various “official” records. In generalspeculation is documented as such.

Notes for JOHN QUINCY CAREY:Harriet and John had 13 children, 11 of them lived. The family lived in many places,the Coulbourne District, Stockton, New Church, VA, Pocomoke Area, Welbourne 8thElection District in 1900, Ironshire.

Harriet died near Pocomoke on February 14,1904 age 65 years 3 months and 13days of bronchial pneumonia. She is buried in Mount Zion Cemetery, Whiton,Maryland and the epitaph on her tombstone reads; "Precious one she has left us,Left us yes, forever more. But we hope to meet our loved ones on that bright andhappy shore. Lonely the house and sad the hour since our dear one has gone. But,oh, a brighter hour than ours, In heaven is now her own."

John Quincy remarried to Mary Jane Bradford on March 15, 1905 in Pocomoke City,Maryland.

Mary Jane Bradford was born April 1852 and was 48 in the 1900 Census. She was awidow with 3 children and lived around Snow Hill, Maryland. She lived with herbrother in law Peter Bradford born March 1877 age 23 in 19OO Census and was abarber. She had a son named James who was a barber in Snow Hill. Jane died inSnow Hill Maryland on March 27, 19O6 of heart failure. Burial is in Snow Hill.

John Quincy and Jane Bradford lived for awhile on a farm in front of the RemsenChurch, Big Mill Road below Stockton Maryland. Bertie Carey remembered Mahaliavisiting her brother John Quincy there around 1906. The house burned while theylived there and they moved to Snow Hill, Maryland where Jane died and it is believedshe is buried in Snow Hill next to her son.

After Jane's death John Quincy went to live with his son Clayton near Ironshire. Hegrew a long white beard and had long finger nails and chewed tobacco all the time.He died February 18, 1917 of Carcinoma (Cancer) of the lower jaw at the age of 79years, 3 months and 9 days and is buried next to Harriet in Mount Zion Cemetery.

The undertaker was John W. Burbage & Bother of Berlin, Maryland. The deathcertificate was signed by Dr. Charles R. Law of Berlin, Maryland and the Pastor wasJoe Lynch of Powellville. Funeral cost $55.OO and each of the 5 living sons paid$9.17 each and Arthur Jackson, husband of Ida paid the other $9.17. The trip toWhiton is around 2O miles and John Quincy's last ride was made in a horse drawnhearse.

John Quincy was a big man with big hands and did a lot of wrestling, either as a sportor for money and at times he could be pretty mean and rough, so the story is told.Most of his life was spent farming and he was well known in Worcester County.

Notes for HARRIETT JANE TIMMONS:Harriet was the daughter of William Timmons age 36 and Mary P. Timmons age 32,with brother William age 11. In the Census of 185O, 9th H.H. 838, Harriet Janeshown as age 9, Mary A. as age 5 and Albert J. age 2

Harriet had a sister named Mary (Maggie) A. Timmons, married name unknown. Shelived below Stockton on the Seymour Lane Farm about one half mile from Big Mill onthe Virginia Road. Two of her children are buried there along with another gravewhich could have been her husband, there are no tombstones.

Notes for ERNEST JACKSON CAREY:Ernest quit drinking at 85, was jumping fences in his 90's and died at 96. He wasborn near Mt Zion Church known as the Shockley neighborhood. He was horse traderand a farmer. At one point he had a farm between Powellville and Whiton, behindthe Methodist church.

Notes for DURAND DEWEY CAREY:Both a gambler and an artist, one of the family stories cites the instance he painted acow on the barn so his wife wouldn't know he took it to be sold. She didn't suspectanything for a few days until she noticed there was turpentine in the milk. Obviouslya skilled artist! Durand was a farmer.

Durand died in the state hospital in Cambridge, MD of Metastasis and SenilePsychosis. He is buried in Whaleysville, MD. There is no tombstone.

His grandchildren remember Smokey the trained Shetland pony who lived to be over30 years old. He played the washboard and harmonica and told tall tales.

Preston James ("Jim") Carey

He was born on 5/25/30 and died on 1/11/05 at home with his family after a lengthybattle with cancer.

Jim is survived by his daughter Tami Oltman, son-in-law Murray Oltman, daughter-in-law Eva Carey, and three grandsons Jason Carey, Zachary Oltman and NathanOltman, as well as, his brother Dale Carey. He is also survived by many members ofhis family including: Myrna & Ronnie Dyson, Bill Carey, Jr., Leisa & Perry Jones; hisin-laws Jeanette Grise, Eva Baker, Leah Dorey, and Donald & Diane Williams, andRae Williams; as well as, many, many loved nieces, nephews.

Jim was son of Preston and Jennie Carey, both deceased. He is preceded in deathby: his son, Gregory Dean Carey who died in 1998; and the love of his life - his wifeof over 54 years, Betty Carey, who preceded him last summer; and his brother BillCarey, Sr.

He was born and raised in Berlin, MD and was a 1947 graduate of Buckingham H.S.in Berlin, MD In 1948, Jim joined the Navy where he served on the U.S.S. Bairoko(CVE 115) and entered Naval Reserve after his initial tour of duty. Jim returned toBerlin and married Betty Jean Williams on January 13, 1950.

In 1952, during the Korean War, Jim returned to active duty and served upon theAmphibious Force Flagship U.S.S. Taconic (AGC-17). He received NationalDefense and Navy Service Occupation medals. After an honorable discharge fromthe Navy in 1953, he again returned to Berlin.

Jim joined the Maryland State Police in 1958, served for 22 years and retired aSergeant in 1980. While a State Policemen, he operated amphibious rescuevehicles, was on the K-9 Corp with "Rebel" and worked in the Easton, Salisbury andBerlin Barracks. He received a Superintendents Commendation and Governor'sCitation.

In 1976 Jim joined the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, served in Maryland and Floridaunits and was called up again for active duty during Desert Storm where he workedthe Port of Charleston. Jim was a Chief Petty Officer when he retired from the CoastGuard Reserve in 1992.

Jim and Betty owned Pine Rest Cottages in West Ocean City, MD and then lived inBerlin, MD for 10 years before moving to Pine Island, FL. Jim and Betty lived in PineIsland for 22 years before relocating back to the Fenwick, DE area in 2001.

Jim was a member of the: Berlin Volunteer Fire Department; American Legion Post

She was born and raised in Williamsville, DE and was a 1947 graduate of SelbyvilleH.S.. She and Jim owned Pine Rest Cottages in West Ocean City, MD and then livedin Berlin, MD for 10 years before moving to Pine Island, FL.. Betty & Jim lived in PineIsland for 22 years before relocating back to the Fenwick, DE area in 2001.

Betty was a past member of the Berlin Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary as well as apast member of the Berlin Boggs-Dishroom American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She isa current member of the Pine Island, FL American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 136and the Ocean View, DE VFW Post 7234.

Betty loved her family and friends; enjoyed reading; playing cards; crosswordpuzzles; bingo; cooking; and, bowling in the Foxy Ladies bowling league.
