Archdiocese of Newark - 2020 Lenten Regulations
1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence During Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.
On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) small meals, which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 1, 2020 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 7, 2020.
*Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the
obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year.
SACRAMENT OF

CARDINAL TOBIN HAS DIRECTED THE FOLLOWING REGARDING THE CORONA VIRUSPriests, deacons and extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are urged to practice good hygiene, washing their hands before Mass begins or even using an alcohol based anti-bacterial solution before and after distributing Holy Communion, as is practiced in so many of our parishes and institutions already. Assured the faithful that if they are sick or are experiencing symptoms of sickness they are not obligated to attend Mass, and even out of charity they ought not to attend. The sign of peace should be exchanged without physical contact. Distribution of Holy Communion to the faithful via the chalice is to be suspended. No member of the faithful is obliged to receive the Body of Christ on the tongue. Communion must be received in the hand.
Should more aggressive steps than these be necessary, you will be notified.

PUBLIC DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRY - SOCIAL JUSTICE
Bake sale and Fair-Trade Event today!!! Homemade cakes, cookies and items to celebrate St. Joseph’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day will be available to purchase after all masses. We will provide the coffee! This is the only fundraiser for Haiti, please come and support our efforts to raise money for nutrition packs and prenatal vitamins. Visit lampforhaiti.org for more info!! Why lamp for Haiti?? Dr. Morgan’s story is very powerful as is his determination to help the Haitian community improve medical care. Dr. Morgan has made a change with the clinic in the huge shantytown known as Cite Soleil. Lamp was started in 2005 and today the clinic has become the fabric of the community. Dr. Morgan and his volunteers navigated thieves and obstacles of giant proportions to survive and overcome. What began as a dilapidated building, became the clinic it is today. People were bathing in the streets with dirty water, had no health-care or schools. Today stands three water filtration systems, a growing clinic with computers, x-ray machines, a lab, an ambulance and a school!!!! Dr. Morgan put his faith in the Holy Spirit to show him the way, he started with a backpack filled with medicine, and now has ahealth care center serving over 20,00 patients a year with a staff of 19 and 3 doctors! We hope you are inspired by the work that Dr. Morgan and Lamp for Haiti has done for the people of Cite Soleil, and you are propelled into action to help. We thank you for your continued support in our effort to be successful this lent. NEPAL- “Handmade Felt Nepal” employs village women and offers them various benefits, such as health-care and education for their children. 2020 FAITH QUEST LENTEN SPEAKER SERIES
The 2020 annual Lenten adult spirituality program, Faith Quest, will be held Wednesday evenings March 18, March 25, and April 1 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at St. Thomas More R.C. Church, 12 Hollywood Avenue in Fairfield.
The Topics & Speakers for the first evening, Wednesday, March 18Prayer & Spirituality - “Help Me Hear Your Path For Me Oh Lord!” presented by Ginger Grancagnolo, Ed.D., OPA, lecturer, author and counselor. Grancagnolo holds a doctorate in Christian ministry and has a background in education, psychology and theology. We will explore the inner pathways to the heart of God’s love and truth that always awaits us deep within our hearts. Understanding Sacred Scripture - “Parables of the Kingdom” presented by Rev. Christopher M. Ciccarino, Associate Dean for the Seminary and Academic Studies at Immaculate Conception Seminary. Jesus used parables to teach and challenge His hearers. We will examine three accounts to understand how Jesus wanted to re-define the Kingdom of God. Faith In Practice - “Women of all ages striving for the perfect work/life balance” presented by ChristineBoyle, Director of Campus Ministry at Saint Peter’s University where her work centers on student spiritual development using Ignatian spirituality. She is an alumna of University of Scranton (BA History) and the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University (M.Div.) Using gospel examples of Mary and Martha, this discussion will help women in each life stage to reframe their daily approaches to experience self-success in their lives. The program is open to the public and the three speaker topic areas focus on: Prayer and Spirituality, Sacred Scripture,
and Faith in Practice. An offering of $5.00 per session or $15.00 for the four week series is requested to help defray expenses. Pre-registration is also requested. Checks should be made payable to St. Thomas More Church.
For a brochure and registration form, contact any of the sponsoring parishes. Attendance at prior sessions is not necessary to benefit from participation at a later session. All sessions qualify for catechist certification.
Faith Quest began in 2007 as part of the Archdiocese of Newark’s New Energies Initiative. The four cluster parishes of West Essex - - St. Aloysius in Caldwell, Notre Dame in North Caldwell,
Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Roseland and St. Thomas More in Fairfield collaborated to develop an adult education and information program that is held during the Lenten season.
In the event of inclement weather, check for updates at www.stmchurch.net or call 973-227-0055.
2020 ANNIVERSARY LITURGIES We are once again preparing the annual tradition of honoring those couples in our Archdiocese who will be celebrating five, twenty-five and fifty years of Christian marriage in the year 2020. These anniversary liturgies will be celebrated by Cardinal Joseph Tobin in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark as follows: April 19, 2020 3:00PM 5 & 25 years (Due April 3) (All counties) May 3, 2020 3:00PM 50 years (Due April 15) (All counties) It is our desire that every couple in the Archdiocese deserving of such recognition be present at the appropriate liturgy. The presence of a large number of couples will be a tender witness to the strength and stability of Christian marriage in today’s society. For registration & information, please contact Colleen at
the rectory 973-227-0055.
