Overview – Preparation For Construction

InPower BC is in the process of completing plans and designs to provide them with a “leave to commence” from the Comptroller of Water Rights and a “site release” from BC Hydro in order to begin construction. Examples include a Comprehensive Environmental Management Plan, Drinking Water Protection Plan, Traffic Management Plan, to numerous construction plans. Generally, SNC-Lavalin plans to begin the site clearing near the tunnel entrances in July, and in October begin the tunneling. These and other site changes will be undertaken soon and the May 2014 construction report will provide more details.

“We would like to say thank you to BC Hydro, SNC-Lavalin, and the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce for hosting the John Hart Project meet and greet. The setting was well organized and allowed us to get an in-depth understanding of the project and of the supplier requirements for the next five years.” - John and Steele Gorosh, Gorosh Cranes “The event, even with the limited time frame allowed, did provide an excellent opportunity for us to highlight our services and expertise to the project team members. The format was somewhat different from what would be our normal approach but our company is adaptable and rose to the occasion. We are impressed by BC Hydro’s consulting process and for the innovative techniques that were demonstrated and appreciate your assistance over the past few years.” – Al Brown and Dave Crosby, Industrial Scaffolding Services Ltd

“The business event today was informative, organized and useful. The format ensured fair and equitable representation, and while 4 minutes was short, it was still sufficient to allow us to communicate our key message. It was also great to have an opportunity to meet directly with the discipline leads that will be managing the work. We appreciated the effort to ensure that potential subcontractors were matched to the appropriate project representatives. Ecofish and A-Tlegay thanks you and the group for your continued efforts to engage local businesses.” – Ian Murphy, Ecofish Research Ltd “The business event was an interesting experience and while I thought the 4 minute meeting would not have much merit, I must admit the time line focused our presentation and certainly allowed the interviewer to determine if our companies contact details would be forwarded to the various parties that would be interested in our services. On the positive side we were also able to meet with the representative from IMPSA for a few minutes and provide him with the information about our port facilities and the opportunity to discharge heavy lift cargoes in Nanaimo. Well done and we look forward to keeping up to date with the progress on this significant project.” – Doug Peterson, Nanaimo Port Authority

Economic Opportunities – Next Steps

12

Please continue to follow majorprojects.ca for project updates. SNC-Lavalin, the design-builder, continues to work on a project labour agreement with the B.C. Building Trades that will include all local union and non-union subcontractors. Once this agreement is in place the general details will be communicated. Subcontractors and individuals remain eager on the economic opportunities. The union agreement needs to be in place before the formal subcontractor bids and hiring may take place.
