According to John Deere and the 2 Cylinder Magazine, service manual, JDS-SM2004 can be used to repair the John Deere A & B, both Styled and Unstyled. John Deere advices this in Field Service Bulletin 165-S dated
1954. The Service Bulletin states that John Deere never made a traditional service manual for either the John Deere A, or Unstyled B. The service bulletin states, that all you are working with, is bigger componenets
in the John Deere A, the design of the tractor is the same.

INTRODUCTION
This Unit of the Service Manual covers the Model "B" Tractor. The information contained herein is the product of 14 years experience with the Model "B" and includes the latest factory-approved methods of service. With over 400 pages and 800 illustrations, this Unit gives you practical, complete and up-to-date maintenance information.
The methods given for ·removal, disassembly, inspection, repair, assembly and installation of all parts are factory- and field-tested; they have proved to be the shortest and most economical methods of maintaining the John Deere Model "B" Tractor. Included in this Unit are dimensions of many new parts to serve as an aid in determining when parts replacement is necessary. In addition, this Unit describes.briefly the more complex systems of the tractor, and tells how they operate. This information is included to give you a better understanding of what happens during tractor operation.
The Service Manual was planned and written for the Service Department; its place is in the shop. Use the manual whenever in doubt about correct maintenance procedures. Use it as a text book for new Service Department personnel who are unfamiliar with John Oeere Tractors.
As newer and improved methods of maintenance are found and as improvements in John Deere Tractors are made, new pages with the latest information will be supplied for your Service Manual. The John Deere Model "B" Tractor is a general-purpose tractor with sufficient power to pull two Hinch plow bottoms or the equivalent. With six forward speeds, one reverse speed, power take-off and belt pulley, this tractor adapts itself to a wide variety of power requirements on medium-sized farms. When equipped with single front wheel or adjustable wide front axle, the Model "B" meets the exacting needs of specialty crops of all kinds.
Serial Numbers. Each tractor bears a serial number located on the main case just under the magneto (Figure 10-5-1). Development of the so-called "styled" tractor was completed with Serial No. B96000. From that number to Serial No. B201000, only minor changes were made in the tractor specifications or design.

Beginning with Serial No. B201000, the tractor was modified to provide a choice of all-fuel or gasolineburning engines, greater power, increased driver comfort, improved crankcase ventilation, a stronger frame and other improvements. The instructions contained in this Manual cover all tractors with serial numbers above B96000. Wherever maintenance procedures are different because of the changes made in tractors above B201000, both procedures are given.

Remove stack, lift out filter core and wash it thoroughly in a non-inflammable cleaning solvent. Shake core vigorously to remove cleaner from core and submerge in clean engine oil for five minutes until core is thoroughly soaked. Shake to remove excess oil. Install breather core and replace stack.
8. AIR CLEANER CHECK (All "B" Tractors). _
If there is 1/2-inch of dirt in the bottom of the inner or outer oil cup, or if the oil is too thick with suspended dirt to flow freely, serv _ ~,~ll:U::.l:::g.AN ,~. . ice the air cleaner. See "lO-Hour Service." If oil level is low but the oil appears clean, add oil of correct weight to bring it up to the oil level mark.

Check crankcase oil level at the oil level test cock. If low, fill until oil runs out oil level t~st cock. Add same weight oil as is being used in the crankcase.

The air cleaner is the lung of the tractor. No tractor will perform for very long with a dirty or poorly-serviced air cleaner. As a Serviceman, point out to the operator the importance of this part and the value of regular service to it. As a technician who prides himself in perfect jobs, check the air cleaner before any tractor leaves your shop and service if necessary.
10. AIR CLEANER SERVICE (All "B" Trac-tOTS). ~.
The air cleaner will normally be serviced after every 30 hours of operation but under severe dust conditions more frequent servicing may be necessary. The operator should never allow the oil to become

too thick to flow freely; nor to allow more than 1/2-inch dirt to collect in the cup.
When servicing the air cleaner, remove oil cup, empty oil, and scrape out dirt. Wash out cup with a non-inflammable cleaning solvent. Refill the inner and outer cups to indicated level with same grade oil as used in the engine crankcase for prevailing temperature conditions. Inspect bottom screen of cleaner body and remove any accumulation of chaff and dirt. Replace oil cup securely.

Remove Clutch and Pulley. Tractors B201000 and Up. Remove pulley
cover and three slotted nuts, releasing clutch adjusting plate. Remove springs, outer facing, sliding drive disk, and facing disk. Remove cap screw and washer from end of crankshaft. Reinstall the cap screw to protect threads in end of crankshaft, hook jaws of a suitable puller behind gear on driving disk, and pull driving disk from crankshaft (Figure 60-25-3). Remove inner facing and pulley.

Tractors B96000 to B201000. Remove pulley cover and three slotted nuts, releasing clutch adjusting plate. Remove springs and outer facing. Remove nut and washer from end of crankshaft. Using puller as shown in Figure 60-25-4, pull driving disk from crankshaft. Remove inner facing and pulley.
Remove First Reduction Gear Cover.
NOTE: When working on tractors B20i 000 and up, remove platform screws and lift right front corner of platform out of the way. Remove right brake assembly to permit removal of first reduction gear cover.
Remove transmission drive gear and _ shaft cover, and nut from end of gear and shaft. While pulling outward on clutch lever, drive on end of transmission drive gear and shaft with a lead

hammer to force it out of its bearing in first reduction gear cover (Figure 60-25-5). Break cover loose from dowels by driving on cover and remove it from tractor. Remove spacer and first reduction gear using a suitable puller (Figure 60-25-6).
