Eventually the monkey would get made over outrageous prices other stores were charging for their furniture. I suppose the ad had some lasting value because I can still see it in my mind. It made an impression. This week we look at the story of when Jesus enters the Temple and finds the money changers and the bird sellers at work scamming everyone and that makes him mad! Mad enough to overturn the tables and chase everyone out. Of course some look at this and wonder why the "man of peace" could get so angry - it does not make sense. But it really does because of the detail surrounding why he got mad. His anger and his resulting actions made an impression. He showed passion for his beliefs and perhaps there is a lesson for us. Please join us and listen to my sermon titled, Temple Tantrum. This Sunday we also celebrate two mission efforts, publicly welcome two new members and our own Megan Miller has special music. See you at 10:30... and don't forget the congregational meeting at 10:25 to elect Session members. CONGREGATIONAL MEETING JUNE 23 AT 10:25 There will be a brief congregational meeting this Sunday June 23 at 10:25am, preceding the worship service. The purpose of this meeting is to hear the report of the Nominating Committee and the subsequent election of officers to the Session. The following names will be placed in nomination at the congregational meeting this Sunday: To be reelected to a two year term… Stephen Dill, Kara Myers, Rosalea Vogler, and Stuart Kinquist New Elders to be electedBarb Hanson (one year term) Rachelle Calvin (to be ordained) Randy Clark (to be ordained) There will be a call for nominations from the floor during the meeting. Prior to making a nomination from the floor, please make certain that the person you are nominating has agreed, if elected, to serve. ALSO THIS SUNDAY JUNE 23 WOMEN’S MOVIE DISCUSSION GROUP All women are welcome to join in this group on Sunday from 9:3010:25am in the JCPC Library. This group is watching clips from the movie, Samson (2018) and talking about what we can learn from the OT book of Judges chapters 13-16 which includes the birth of Samson, his Nazirite vow, his superhero strength, and his repeated disobedience to God. We will discuss how Samson was a traitor to himself and more importantly, to God. He betrayed his vow to God for physical desires he had. God had gifted this man with tremendous strength and power, yet Samson abused his power rather than using it for God’s glory. Even with all his failures and shortcomings, Samson had a heart for God and was still considered a great example of faith as we will read in Hebrews chapter 11. And we will get to the part about Delilah, who seemed to only have a heart for herself. And money. The Lord used her, though, to bring humility in Samson and consequently deliver death to thousands of Philistines. Please join in this discussion group and learn that in Samson’s story are lessons for us today, that we too, receive God’s strength by way of the supernatural power of the Holy Spirit, so that we can bring hope to the lives that God wants us to touch.

ABOUT THIS SUNDAY JUNE 23 ~FROM PASTOR JOHN

There was a commercial a long time ago sponsored by a furniture store in Collinsville that featured a monkey and a guy who kept asking what made the monkey mad! Eventually the monkey would get made over outrageous prices other stores were charging for their furniture. I suppose the ad had some lasting value because I can still see it in my mind. JCPC DONATION FOR FLOOD RELIEF

The JCPC Mission Committee has donated and sent to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), $400 as our church’s contribution for Missouri’s tornado and flood relief. https://pres-outlook.org/2019/05/pda-is-sending-teams-and-resources The PDA has deployed National Response Teams and is processing grant requests. “‘The worst I can remember’ is the most common phrase I am hearing,” said Jim Kirk, PDA’s associate for disaster response. “There are many rivers that are at historic flood levels. Although spring does bring severe weather in terms of tornadoes and rain, this has been a particularly impactful spring. This has been the most severe spring in the past eight years. In addition to the severity, the pattern which is causing the severe weather has remained in place for a longer period of time.” Give to a disaster/relief effort of your choice by designating the Disaster Response “DR” project you would like to support—regarding the midwest flooding, note the account—DR000191. Address checks to: Presbyterian Church (USA)

YOU’RE INVITED To the Installation of Rev. Joy Ridge This Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 4:00pm As Pastor of First

Presbyterian Church 321 Main Street

Carthage, IL 62321 Pastor John will be preaching at

Joy’s Installation Service.

MORE ABOUT THIS SUNDAY Jack and Junia Thompson (Junia is Elva Holder's granddaughter) will be joining us at church this Sunday to talk about their upcoming mission work in Indonesia with TEAM Global Alliance of Churches and Missionaries. During worship, Jack will give a short synopsis of their planned work. Both before and after worship, they will be at a table in the Welcome Center.

Our Mission Team has agreed to give them a check from our Mission Fund. If you feel called to support their work, you may do so in three ways. First, you could write a check to JCPC and mark that it is for "Thompson Mission Work" and place that check in the offering. At the end of the month, we will forward a church check to them. Second, when you meet with them at the table, you can give them a check directly. Third, missionaries always seek ongoing support (normally a monthly pledge) and you may do so by speaking to them directly.

Thank you for extending a welcome to them and please be in prayer for the success of their work.

There will be a Session meeting Monday,

June 24 at 7:00pm.

SUMMERTIME PRAYER In “The Summer Day,” Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver (1935-2019) captures the season as a time to pay attention to the wonders of Creation; to be idle and to be blessed. The Summer Day I don’t know exactly what a prayer is. I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass, how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields, which is what I have been doing all day. Tell me, what else should I have done? Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon? Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life? To read the entire work: https://journalverse.com/poem-of-the-month-the-summer-day-mary-oliver Let it inspire you for a walk with God through one of these summer days.

WATCH SERMONS ON THE CHURCH WEBSITE

www.jcpchurch.org Last Sunday we began recording the worship service with our newly purchased video equipment. The equipment was acquired using Ron and Etta Black Memorial Funds with the permission of their family. The sermon portion of the worship was edited and was also uploaded to our church website. You can reach the sermon by going to: www.jcpchurch.org When you get to the main menu, select "Media.” This will be a drop-down and then select "Sermons.” http://www.jcpchurch.org/sermons You will then be able to read something about the sermon or view the actual sermon. On that same menu you will find a selection for Pastor's Blog. Pastor John has written several new blogs.

Take a moment to explore some of the other items on the website including the tab "About Us" where you can select the "Staff" which has been updated and please go to our "Prayer Wall" where you can see what prayers have been submitted and you can click on ones you would like to offer your personal prayer.

When you first sign on, the image you see is called a "Slider." If you stay on that page long enough, the slider will change. When you get to the slider which promotes the summer sermon series, click on the slider and it will take you to a page showing the themes and a short explanation of the sermons for the next four weeks. Our website is being regularly updated so keep checking for more information on the website. Also, if someone is curious to know more about our church, simply direct them to our website. www.jcpchurch.org

ITALIAN ICE BOOTH We will have an Italian Ice Booth at the 4th of July Fireworks Event in Bridgeton at the BMAC Complex. Last year we had some great volunteers who wound up being swamped because it was warm weather and warm weather sells Italian Ice. We are creating a list of those who would be available to donate a couple of hours to help at the booth. We will begin set-up around 5:00pm and the event runs until about 10:00pm. There is a signup sheet on the signup table. Please list your name and what hours you would be available to volunteer.

ALONG THE PARADE ROUTE

ITALIAN ICE BOOTH We will also have the Italian Ice Booth at the Mobil Station along the 4th of July Parade Route. The Parade starts at 10:00am so we will need volunteers from 9:00am until 12:00 noon. This is a great way to earn income that goes to the JCPC General Fund and remember it comes from outside sources and not our church contributors. There is a signup sheet on the signup table for this. Please let us know what hours you can help.

THE WOMEN’S PINOCHLE GROUP The women’s Pinochle Group plays cards at our

church on Wednesday afternoons in the JCPC Kitchenette.

HOW TO SUBMIT PRAYER REQUESTS 1. Please call Marion Elliott, 314-739-5372, or call the church office, 314-739-3066,

3. When you come to church there are two more ways to offer a prayer request: At the Welcome Center at JCPC, you can fill out a blue prayer card and place it in the
