A special message to the bereaved fathers. Lynda Schutte “Dad’s you are special, we love you and we understand how much you miss your child.

Please give yourself space and time to remember all the happy times you shared with your child.

Memories are forever in your heart to keep and treasure.

Have a happy and special day on Father’s day”.

Love, Lynda and the CHOC family.

Father’s Day 2012 Grant Bain Father’s Day has never really been as important to me as Mother’s Day. For some reason Mother’s Day seems to be

more celebrated than Father’s Day, probably because it is perceived that mothers do more than fathers. Generally

dads seem to have the onerous job of paying bills, cutting the lawn and such other unenviable jobs, but since the

passing of my little angel Jessica to cancer some 4 years ago, it seems to have all changed. Maybe it was a mental

change for me, but every day is now a special day. I am sure for each mom, dad or sibling that lost a brother, sister,

daughter, grandchild, or a loss of anyone special it is always a loss. To lose a child does not seem fair or right in

anyone’s language, however we have to carry on in order to pay those bills, cut those lawns, etc. The past few years

have been very hard especially on days when one remembers past loved ones. Birthdays are especially hard, but

Mother’s and Father’s Days are somewhat different in that your children thank you for being their parent, for

looking after them when they are sick, when they are sad or need help. To laugh and play with them is the way the

universe is supposed to work. When one of those little special people are no longer around for you to do that, it

almost seems that you have failed as a parent something which I know is not true, but it just seems that way. We

have a son Ethan who has been our rock. He has kept us sane when sanity did not really seem important, he has

grown into the most amazing human being; compassionate, thoughtful and we are just so very fortunate to have him

in our lives. We have also been blessed with a lovely little girl since we lost Jessica. Georgia is her name and both

Kerrin (my wife) and I believe she has been blessed with the energy of herself and Jessica combined. She is full of

life and certainly keeps us on our toes. So what does Father’s Day really mean to me now? It means I don't take

anything for granted, I try to be patient with people in general, I look at my children as if they are on loan to me and

so I try to love them even more. Not by smothering them necessarily with hugs and kisses (those are a given), but

just by spending as much time with them as possible, watching them and learning from them. So Father’s Day will

be special for me as is every day for me with my kids. I never really ever thought there should be just one day a year

we should celebrate the love or gratitude of someone - we should do this every day. I always tell my friends this,

unfortunately perhaps it does take a situation like losing a child to make you realise this.

Anyway, happy Father’s Day to all dads and remember we all only have one life,

let’s use it to the best of our ability and share the love and light ..!!

The aim of this workshop is to improve awareness of

childhood cancer among paediatricians, general practitioners

and nurses. Issues covered will include the early warning

signs of cancer, cancer and HIV, practical strategies to break

bad news and ethical and cultural issues that affect the

treatment of children with cancer. The workshop will be

useful to medical professionals on the frontline who may be

the first to suspect that a child has cancer. It will offer

practical skills in the art of breaking bad news. Many topics

will be drawn from oncology but will be useful in working

with children with chronic conditions, as well as their

families. In addition, it will offer insight into issues that face

families whose children survive cancer, as well as those who

don’t. Finally, there will be a session on increasing capacity

in high pressure units using available resources and creative

solutions.

Cost: R350 per person,

with a limited number of scholarships available.

Caregiver’s Days Adri Ludick

CHOC thanks the caregivers for the wonderful care they give to the children with cancer and life-threatening

blood disorders and their families. It takes very special people to look after others with such kindness and

concern. During the caregiver’s day we showed appreciation to them for their passion and dedication.
