JOHANNESBURG BOWLS ASSOCIATION TECHNICAL OFFICIALS STANDING COMMITTEE

Johannesburg Bowls Association TOSC Annual report 2009-2010

1. Umpires courses

So far we had a very successful umpire’s course at Ridge Park bowling club, we qualified 10 markers, and 7 Technical officials level 1 and one Technical official level 2.

Further we have another course planned to start on the 14th August 2010 at Rhodes Park Bowling club, Entries are going well and it promises to be another successful course.

2. Changes to the committee.

Bernard Greenberg has resigned as convenor but could successfully be convinced to stay on as a member so that we can still tap into his unlimited knowledge, Thanks Bernard for your years of service as convenor and your continued support in making our TOSC as successful as it is.

Dirk Malomgré has taken over as convenor.

We also welcomed Johan Nel from Rhodes Park bowling club onto our committee. Johan a warm welcome and hope you enjoy it.

We unfortunately also had to record the resignation of Jill Busschau, Jill thanks for all the hard work on the committee and you will be missed, also thanks that I can still count on your support in assisting me with the new job on hand. It is really appreciated.

Dennis Robinson decided to retire from our committee, Dennis also thanks for all the hard work on the committee and all go well.

3. Competitions

This season we were once again privileged to assist with marking and umpiring at the BSA Masters in Pretoria, this was a fantastic opportunity to enjoy outstanding bowls.

We also took care of the semi finals and finals of all the JBA competitions.

Thanks to everybody that dedicated their time as a marker or umpire to the district and the game of bowls, we do appreciate your support and continued efforts

JOHANNESBURG BOWLS ASSOCIATION COACHES STANDING COMMITTEE

2010 has been a year of highs and disappointments. We completed the mandatory refresher courses, but were disappointed that large numbers of coaches did not avail themselves of the opportunity. To regain their qualification, they will have to attend a complete Club Coach Course in future. The U19 and U25 Squad training at the beginning of the year paid off in April with the Girls U25 team leav-ing the Inter District with Gold medals. The U25 boy’s teams played well but could not get the consistency that is required to win medals. Hopefully with the next Inter District tournament being in July 2011, they will have ample time to play together. With the change of BSA Talent Identification programme, the Feeder Squad did not get off the ground at all but hopefully in the new season we will be flooded with 20/20 assessments and arrange assessment dates. We are offering coaching and 20/20 assessments to groups of players but if there are any people who are interested they must contact any of the Coaches Standing Committee to put their name down.Coaching at club is active with Clinics and Development programmes being enthusiastically supported. Well done to all people who have been involved in these initiatives. If you need any assistance, please contact me.The committee would like to wish the incoming Executive well for the next season.

Thank youSue Upton (Convenor)

JOHANNESBURG BOWLS ASSOCIATION GREENKEEPERS STANDING COMMITTEE

This season we definitely had an abundance of rain with some clubs recording near two meters of rainfall for the first half of the season. This presented the green-keepers with some challenges, including over-spending of their budgets on fungicides, but despite this the majority of clubs still managed to produce good greens.

The biggest problem clubs are faced with in trying to achieve and maintain high gradings for their greens is the Heinz green (multi strain grass) phenomena. The only way to resolve this problem is unfortunately to replant the green and this season the Wanderers Club took that step. It would appear that in the newseason a few more clubs will be following in their footsteps which will go a long way to improving the overall standard of greens in our district.

Further to the above it has been noted that not many clubs perform a Levelling exercise on their greens. I highlight that fact that one of the requirements in the Bowls SA “Standard Procedure of Staging Tourna-ments and Championships” is for the club to produce a Level Profile when being inspected by the BSA NSCG (National Standing Committee Greens) for any tournaments being hosted by the district. The JBA will be hosting the Men's Nationals next season and the BSA inspection of the greens will be done in early February 2011.

In closing, I thank the members of this standing committee for their support and dedication over the last season and congratulate John Simpson of the Rivonia Bowls Club who will be taking over as the convener in the new season and wish them well in the seasons to come.

Anselm McLean (Convenor)

REPORT OF THE HONORARY TREASURER FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 2010

This again has been a year of economic uncertainty, interest rates declining and invest-ment returns suffering. I am pleased to be able to report a surplus for the year under re-view. WHY, because of the generous support from sponsors who were so willingly cajoled into giving by your persuasive Executive, particularly President Jac.Fees for 2010/11. Unfortunately these will need to rise as costs, whilst being contained,

inevitably rise. I propose the following:Bowls South Africa R140 - as advised by BSAJ B A 120Benevolent Fund 25

Rent levy 15TOTAL R300

This should cover forecast expenses with sponsorships providing some comfort. BENEVOLENT FUNDTimes have necessitated the addition of a beneficiary. The new contributions will mean we can meet our obligations and possibly be able to increase grants modestly.GENERAL

AUDITORS

The sincere thanks of the Association are tendered to Nexia Levitt Kirson for their services as Auditors of the Association.

To Leif Olsen [Development] who had to move to Pretoria, well done to you and your team.Sue Upton [Coaches] please continue with your talent identification program, it is working very well. Now that your committee and some of the club members who have completed the course on the presentation of the BSA Talent Identification program, you are able to present the course to more than enough people, well done to you all.Anselm McLean [Green-keepers] without a decent surface we don’t have a game, well done to your team, and a warm welcome to John Simpson who has taken over from Anselm. Bernard Greenberg [Technical Officials] congratulations on a job well done. I would like to congratulate Dirk [with the unpronounceable surname ] Malomgré for taking over from Bernard as Convenor of Technical Officials, and wish him and his committee good luck for the new season.

To our selectors, three Gold, two Silver Medals, and an invitation to next year’s competition , what more can I say, well done.

On a personal note, I thank the under 25’s, for their indulgence of me over the past number of years. Thank you to the managers and drivers who went to Nelspruit, namely Sue Upton and Bar-bara Parks. Congratulations to the girls for achieving Gold as well as the boys who did exception-ally well. It was great to see all the new faces.

I thank my Executive for their support starting with Anselm McLean, our incoming President, good luck for next year; I know you have the support of the Executive to take this district from strength to strength. Tracy Meyeridricks, the incoming Vice President, the ladies touch on the executive has not gone unnoticed. Well done to you and your committee for the running of the hugely successful Women’s Spar Classic Tournament. Peter Alexander, our treasurer, another year has come and gone and you continue to count the beans with amazing precision and accuracy, thank you. Barry, continue to bring your refreshing ideas to the Executive.Sadly we had to say goodbye to Lance who has moved to Eastern Gauteng. Thank you for a job well done with the Provincial ‘B’s.

Special thanks goes to our secretaries, Storm Howard and Jannie Hurst, I thank God for giving the two of you a sense of humour otherwise you would have seriously battled with me. Very well done and continue with your hard work in support of this district.

To my club of 30 years, Bryanston Sports Club, thank you for all the support you have given me and for making your facilities so readily available to the district throughout the last three years. Lu-isa Riva, good job for the past 2 years and good luck to the new President, Hennie Auret.

To the council, delegates, clubs and members, thank you very much for the support that you have given me over the years. My gratitude and a very special thank you to those clubs who have un-selfishly hosted JBA competitions at the expense of greens space to their members.

Lastly but certainly not least to my wife Vanessa and my daughters Chantelle and Dominique, “sorry for you but I’m back”. Thank you.
