Workshop Controller/VDA

I am currently the workshop controller at Chaplane. I am a full key holder and have full access to every aspect of the business. I assist the Director in running the bodyshop when he is absent. My duties include estimating (VDA) as well as running the workshop, I also run our Meguairs product retail side of things including ordering, stock take and sales. I am a first aider and fire warden. I supervise 10 employees and distribute the workload as well as making sure targets are met and jobs are completed in time and to the quality expected of a multi manufacturer Approved bodyshop. Being in a bodyshop environment I have to coordinate the MET technicians, panel beaters, prep and paint department and quality control. I also have to make sure correct procedures and Approved standards are kept to. I am also responsible for obtaining technical data and certain training of the staff. I cover for staff absences and can do everything in the bodyshop apart from panel beating and painting. We also use Hunter wheel alignment equipment in which I am fully trained in. I deal with insurance companies and engineers, compile estimates with Audatex estimating software. I also liaise with customers regards booking in and updating. I can run the parts department if the staff member is absent, as well as sort out the dry stores and paint stock. We currently use Autoflow for bodyshop management and Ascribe for dry goods. Paint wise we use Glasurit and Sikkens. I keep an eye on the courtesy vehicles on site and make sure any maintenance is carried out as well as defleeting. It is also my duty to arrange and see to maintenance of the premises and equipment.

This was initially a Christmas temporary job until 24th December 2009, but they have decided to keep me on for a while longer, as they said “I was an outstanding worker”. I had to have a full police vetting and disclosure to get the job due to the sensitive nature of the items, as well as getting access to post office counters etc. The job involves multi drop of parcels, around 60-100 drops a day plus around 8 collections. While this pays the bills, it is not permanent, and also the commute is 1hr 30mins plus a day which is not ideal. A local job is preferred, as the commute takes time away from my family.

I found out about this job via my previous employer. I relocated to Stockton-on-tees as the job offered a lot of opportunity. I got my Class 2 license and trained in the recovery trade, I also got my Class 1 license due to needing to recovery artic lorries. I also had to transport plant including forklifts, mewp’s (cherry pickers), diggers and various other machinery. I regularly used a counter balance fork lift at work loading and off load lorries.
