Psoriasis is a condition that causes skin cells to grow too quickly, resulting in thick patches of skin that appear as red or white. Most often, these patches are on the knees, elbows, scalp, hands, feet or lower back. The condition is most common in adults, but children can have psoriasis, too.

Psoriasis is caused when the immune system is too vigilant and mistakes skin irritation or trauma for an infection, which leads to the formation of scaly, thick areas of skin. It is often an inherited genetic condition and may flare up due to stress, diet, allergies, medications or injuries to the skin.

Psoriasis often leads to patches of red, inflamed skin that are covered with loose scales. Skin may be itchy or painful and in some cases may crack or bleed. Fingernails and toenails may become pitted or change color as a result of psoriasis. The condition may also cause joint swelling, tenderness and pain.
