Wet Western Days Even though the Lewisville Western Days Car Show endured a steady downpour all day Sept. 29, Legends took the Club Participation Award.

Thanks to Tom Lainson and Joel Joseph for bringing their Vettes and joining me. We have a lot of Members’ Name Tags that haven’t been picked up. Tom Lainson brings them to all the meetings. They each have a magnet on the back and Tom’s getting so many that he’s having a hard time walking past any car except a Corvette. Carl Johanson engraves new members’ names on them and Don Clark manufactured the blanks for us. Here’s a list of tags we have. Saturday, September 15 was scheduled for rain but instead was overcast most of the day and in the low eighties. A perfect day for our second annual church car show sched-uled to run from 1-5. The bounce house was in place, the food was being prepared, Mustang Sally the promoter was setting up and all I needed now was cars! Between noon and 1pm the Corvette Legends of Texas made me proud as Sam & Linda Denault, Jerry Echols, and Ken Dobbs with their C2’s arrived followed closely by Joel Joseph and his C3. Even Steve Daniels made an appearance! It was great to have the club support again this year. I was happy as cars kept rolling in. Last year we only had about 19 cars but accepted it as a first year situation and hoped the show would grow each year. By 2pm we had 44 cars in the parking lot and 39 reg-istered. And, 13 of these 39 were Corvettes!!! Many hot dogs, chili dogs, and Frito pies were consumed throughout the day, but I had to tell Joel that the odds were against him in the 50/50 raffle, since he won it last year! Again this year the Corvette Legends won the club participation trophy and every Corvette Legends member in attendance won a trophy for their car too!

Legends Members Out and About “Rude Dog’s” Car Show

I also won for the 1973 Honda CB350 I restored a couple of years ago. I want to thank Sam, Linda, Jerry, Ken, and Joel for coming out again this year and supporting Christ Community Church. Next year’s car show is already scheduled for Saturday, September 14 and hopefully we will be up to sixty cars or more and get the Corvette Legends support once more. And no, Joel didn’t win the 50/50 this year. The pot was $142.00 and the winner received $71.00. It was won by one of our church members. I felt both bad and good about this as I didn’t want it to go to any of us but it did. And the guy who won it was laid off by HP three months ago and is still looking for an IT job so that was a blessing to him.

by Neal Bellamy

This is the second in a series of articles dis-cussing Corvette maintenance and upkeep. Although this is focused on Corvettes, it is also applicable to the family car.

CAVEAT -- I probably replace things sooner than needed but I’d rather perform preventa-tive maintenance at my convenience rather than experience a failure. This information is gleaned from read-ing recommended service procedures, listening to “experts,” and my personal experience. If something doesn’t make sense to you, then follow the factory and/or your trusted mechanic’s recom-mendations. Also, I list the brand of products that I prefer, but that does not mean others are not just as good or better.

Regular Upkeep Consumer Report’s September 2012 edition has an article entitled “Make Your Car Last 200,000 Miles.” The number one recommendation is to follow a regular mainte-nance schedule. They also recommend a common sense approach of getting into the habit of lifting the hood to look, listen and smell for anything unusual. Do that both with the engine off and with it running. Oil Changes are the most important maintenance item for engine life using either the Corvette’s DIC “oil life percentage remaining” or a mileage schedule. You should consider following the “severe use” schedule (basically half the normal interval) if you regularly drive in stop and go city traffic, drive in extreme hot or cold weather, or make lots of short trips. I’ve found that following the C5 Corvette’s DIC percent-age remaining would have you changing oil at about 6,000 miles (my driving style). I’m not comfortable with that so I change at 4,000 or so – sooner if I’m going on a trip, later if no trips are planned. Always use the recommended oil viscosity (5-W30) and a brand that meets the GM speci-fication 4718M (for Corvettes) or GM 6094M (for non-

performance GM products). http://ls1tuningguide.com/files/freefiles/gm_approved_engine_oils.pdf If your car is not driven often or less than the scheduled distance per year, then change the oil at least annually. Always use a new oil filter, either GM or a quality brand such as WIX/NAPA Gold (available at O’Reilly and NAPA). Fuel Injectors are another important item for engine performance. In your Corvette, these eight devices send a precisely measured amount of fuel into the cylinders at just the correct time to give a good blend of power and econo-my. At a steady 70mph, each injector will allow fuel to pass for only a fraction of a second about 250 times per minute, so having clean injectors is a must. Today’s gasoline is a blend of many ingredients, including ethanol. Depending on the brand you use, the fuel may not have sufficient clean-ing agents to keep your fuel injectors performing properly. Not every brand of gasoline meets the auto industry’s standards for Top Tier rating. http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html If you do not always use one of these brands, then a good quality fuel injector cleaner additive should be used at every oil change at least. I prefer GumOut All-in-One http://www.gumout.com/ourProducts/all-In-OneFSC.asp and Sea Foam http://www.seafoamsales.com/prod-ucts.html brands, both available at O’Reillys and WalMart. Air Filter replacement in your Corvette is another must item. For normal driving, GM recommends inspecting it every 15,000 miles and replacing if necessary. If it is obvi-ously dirty and full of debris, change it. For driving in dusty conditions, GM recommends replacing at every oil change. You get what you pay for in air filters. I prefer WIX/NAPA Gold, available at O’Reilly and NAPA. Fuel Filter Depending on the year of your Corvette, there may or may not be a replaceable fuel filter. All Cor-vettes built since sometime in 2003 do not have a replace-able filter, but rather have one built into the gas tank. Wiper blades are another item to look at periodically. Blades will generally age out rather than wear out, meaning they will get hard with exposure to sun and age, and do not

work very well when it does finally rain. I recently learned that the wiper blade industry has found a new way to make money. They no longer offer the replacement rubber inserts that slide into your existing metal holders. Rather, they sell the entire holder/blade as a unit, and they sell three different types: winter; summer; and multi-seasonal. Again, you get what you pay for. I buy from Rock Auto and get a great selection (including AC Delco GM) at a good price, but you do have to order before you must have them. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php O’Reilly is a good lo-cal source for quality products.

Next month, maintenance needed due to age.

Meet Our Members

Joe & Kathryn Maulsby Rowlett, Texas

Members since November 2011

In 1989, I decided I wanted to purchase a 1955-1957 T-Bird; until I saw a C1 Corvette one day and that changed my mind. I started searching classified ads in Dallas and looking in Hemmings; even enlisted the assistance of my mom who lives in Oklahoma. She searched the Tulsa World each day. One morning I received a call from my mom and she had seen an ad for a 1960 model for sale in Tulsa. She was quick to inform me that I did not need a Corvette (I was 33 and single at the time). I drove to Tulsa to look at the car during Thanksgiving 1989. It was Ermine White, silver coves and reportedly had a 327 (it has the original 283 with Powerglide). I had to go through a broker and never met the sell-ers. I asked the broker why it was being sold and he said that the sellers recently purchased a pecan farm and they needed a pecan tree shaker more than they needed the Corvette. After completing the purchase, I returned to Dallas. My brother volunteered to fly to Tulsa (he works for American Airlines) and drive the car back in the middle of December. It was very cold the day my brother arrived to pick up the car. The broker told him that the heater did not work. It was a cold, drafty ride back to Dallas, but my brother was happy to drive it. I owned the car for 23 years and never knew that it started life with a power top. At the Lone Star Classic this year, Gary Chesnut looked through the gap in the trunk cardboard divider and saw a three inch hole in the bulkhead. He told me that was indicative of cars with power tops. I assumed all C1s had the large holes. At that point, I should have forgotten about it, but the more I thought about it, the more I had to have a power top.

I found a complete power top unit, paid a lot of money for something I knew would not work, and installed it. Many hundreds of dollars later, it works. Prior to the power top, the car had three options, a heater, Powerglide tranny, and wind-shield washers. My wife Kathryn has only asked me twice in 20 years of marriage, if I was about finished spending money on it. Both times, I replied, I think so. We enjoy taking the car to Kellers on cool evenings and enter-ing it in occasional show and shine events.
