JOB SEARCH ROADBLOCKS TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS

If you have been having trouble finding a job, it may be less about your skills and more about your approach.

Without realizing it, you may be throwing roadblocks in your own path. Here are some of the common job search roadblocks and how to overcome them.

PIGEONHOLING YOURSELF

Depending on what your last job was, you might be trying to find something almost identical in your current job search.

Though you may be very skilled at that position, the skill set that it provides could possibly be used in a number of other kinds of jobs also. There are two ways to avoid pigeonholing yourself.

Brainstorm the different jobs that might also work well with your skill set1

If you don't know how to apply your job skills to different positions, then don't narrow your job search and spend time reading the requirements of as many positions as you can. 2

DOWNPLAYING YOUR SKILLS

Humility is a virtue. However, a job search is not the time to keep mum about your talents.

Be open about things where you are highly skilled and things where you are competent as well.

If you're having trouble making a list of your assets, ask your previous employers and coworkers about the things that they feel make you a good employee and be certain to play up these traits.

Finally, don't downplay the fact that you learn quickly when it comes to skills you might be lacking. A willingness to learn and an interest in the topic can give you an edge in an interview.

NOT CONSIDERING YOUR PASSIONS

Enthusiasm in an interview can be one of the most contagious sentiments you can feel.

If you are in-between jobs, you may want to consider looking for something that you love even if it's not something that you're well trained to do.

A break in employment can, at times, be the push you need to pursue the career that you always wanted to try, whether it means pursuing an art…

…considering going back to school, starting your own business or simply knocking on doors and asking someone to train you. Real success requires real, terrifying risk.

NOT IMPROVING EASY SKILLS

While you are looking for a job, you may want to take the time to update any small skills you might be missing that can make a difference in the hiring process.

This includes having up-to-date certifications in any technical skills that require annual certification. This also includes an updated first aid certificate.

Spend your time job hunting seeking continuing education in different skills that can help round you out as a person and be certain to continually update your resume.

NOT FOLLOWING-UP

Follow-up can be one of the best ways to get a new job. This can happen at many different points.

Call the employer when you have submitted a resume and application to be certain that they received it.

Thank them for their time. Send a handwritten thank-you card when you leave an interview.

The best way to do this is to have it pre-addressed before you go in and then write some specific details on it after you leave before dropping it in the nearest mailbox.
