The Australian War Memorial

The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial's purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Its mission is to assist Australians to remember, interpret and understand the Australian experience of war and its enduring impact on Australian society.

The Audio-Visual Manager, Exhibitions, oversees the production and integration of audio-visual and multimedia systems in the Memorial’s galleries.

The role:

Manages a team of skilled technicians running multi-media and lighting systems in the Memorials galleries. Provides specialist consultant support for major exhibition project development. Develops long term plans for management including the upgrade of gallery audio-visual installations. Monitors the team & systems performance of gallery audio visual services at the Memorial. Conducts continuing research on best practice in the deployment of museum Audio-Visual display technology.

Core Responsibilities

1. Ensure the operation of the multi-media and lighting systems are maintained, including: Manage the Audio-Visual Team; Implement staff training and development and the upgrading of technical resources; Develop and implement a maintenance schedule and forward replacement strategy for continuous upgrading; Devise and implement systems for fault identification and rectification; and, Oversee procurement of spares and consumables.

2. Manage and lead the development and installation of multimedia and lighting systems for all new galleries and temporary exhibitions including:

Manage the development and procurement for all new systems and equipment;

Assist in the selection and management of multimedia producers; Prepare specifications and documentation and liaise with contractors and consultants; and , Oversee gallery installations and major redevelopments.

3. Manage the work of the Gallery Audio Visual Services team including: Monitoring the maintenance and project budgets relating to multimedia and lighting systems and equipment Managing all contracts relating to the team’s work and projects; Managing contractor and consultant registers and panels Specification and supervision of team projects such as documentation, maintenance program organisation,

scheduling and updating of technical manuals Monitoring of trends and developments in multimedia technology and advise on future needs.

4. Liaise with Memorial staff and external contractors and consultants with regard to the multi-media systems.

5. Negotiate with internal content creators to ensure multi-media and lighting shows are delivered to agreed specified standards

Additional Requirements

Provide detailed, high level technical and conceptual advice on Gallery AV design to senior management, architects and engineering consultants. NB the Memorial has recently commenced a large scale building and gallery development programme which will entail a high demand for this service from the position.

The Audio-Visual Team works a 7 day roster and frequently performs after-hours work. The Gallery Audio-Visual Display Maintenance and Development Manager may be required to work outside normal hours

during peak project work. Relevant experience or qualifications demonstrating a detailed understanding of modern Museum AV display technology is

considered desirable as is demonstrated experience with the supervision of content development for Museum AV display platforms

Selection Criteria

1. Demonstrated extensive knowledge and experience in the evaluation, development, procurement, deployment and maintenance of complex audiovisual systems in an organisation or situation comparable to the Memorial’s galleries.

2. Demonstrated ability and experience with the process of production design for AV displays in a museum (or comparable) context, specifically including a clear understanding of the constraining role of exhibition and interaction design in this process.

3. High level interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills including coordination, liaison and representation for project management.

4. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a team of employees with consultants and contractors and to apply current people management and development strategies (Workplace Diversity, Participative Work Practices & Occupational Health & Safety) in a client service environment.

5. Appreciation of the Memorial’s corporate goals and of Australian military history as they apply to the work of this job.
