JOAQUIN MURRIETA

The Robin Hood of El Dorado

In the winter of 1849, a sensational series of events unfolded in the midst of the California gold rush, giving rise to the tale of a gentleman outlaw bent on vengeance who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor. No man, horse, or pouch of gold was safe, and the legend of Joaquin Murrieta, hero and villain was born.

An encounter with a callous band of thieves left Murrieta whipped and beaten, his hard-earned gold stolen. Stalking the hills of the world-famous California wine country in search of his attackers, Murrieta lived life with an outlaw honour, defending the oppressed in a land of lawlessness. He was known as a square gambler and a fine dancer not averse to a glass of wine. Although no documented photos survive of this master of disguise, he was, by all accounts, a handsome man who stole as many hearts as horses.

Stories of Murrieta’s ruthlessness and chivalry spread throughout the West. In 1853, a special corps of California Rangers, created specifically to catch the bandit, claimed to have killed him in a gun battle north of Los Angeles. Still, in the following years, many swore they shared a meal and a glass of port with the outlaw. Some say it was Murrieta’s nephew who carried on after his death. Others maintain it was Joaquin Murrieta himself who rode with the Sundance Kid and traded stories with Mark Twain.

A century later, as the sun ripens the grapes that adorn the hills of gold he once raided, Murrieta, part man, part myth lives on. Today, at Murrieta’s Bar & Grill we toast this enduring, elusive legend.

At Chateau Souverain, we are proud to offer wines that are a modern evolution of a time honoured tradition which began in 1944. Our dedication to high-quality winemaking can be found in the icons of our label, each symbol representing our values and paying tribute to our past while we pave the road to a bright future. The crown symbolizes our souvreign history as one of the original California wineries and our award-winning wines. A bear honours the California grizzly and our commitment to this premier wine making region. A crest showcases our founding year, representing 73 years of winemaking and the evolution that is still to come. The grape leaf expresses our commitment to producing the highest quality wines that are true to their varietal and style.

The Talbott Family bought their dream property to create a burgundian style wine when they established the original winery in Carmel Valley in 1982. In 1994, Talbott purchased the Sleepy Hollow Winery after sourcing fruit from the vineyard for many years making Talbott an all estate winery. Talbott is one of the 37 growers in Santa Lucia Highlands yet it is amongst the elite few as grower-producer. Here we have nurtured a legacy of meticulious craftsmanship across generations where we are dedicated to one simple goal — creating wines of distinction.

The Mount Peak Winery story begins more than a centruy ago at the celebrated Monte Rosso Vineyard, and culminates with the revival of Mount Peak Winery, a vestige of one of California’s ghost wineries. Our wines are inspired by this great place, and we pay tribute to the exraordinary winery that once stood there by capturing its enduring spirit in our wines. Today Mount Peak wines diplay the focus and finesse that are the hallmark of this remarkable place with three distinct wines. Rattlesnake zinfandel, gravity red blend and sentinal cabernet.

CHATEAU SOUVERAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON 38 13 ½ 8 ¾ This wine has a deep plum color and offers intense aromas of toasted vanilla, mocha and subtle baking spices. Elegant layers of blackberry and ripe cherry are complemented by a balanced acidity and smooth tannins, leading into a juicy, lasting finish.

KALI HART CHARDONNAY 52 17 ½ 12 ¾ Notes of mandarin, pineapple and melon with a soft, wonderfully clean finish. This chardonnay shines with a soft, clean finish with a hint of minerality and hard spice notes.

KALI HART PINOT NOIR 57 19 ¾ 13 ½ This wine has aromas of crushed cranberry and plum. On the palate, intense notes of rich red and black berries are supported by hints of oak and are accentuated with soft silky tannins. The finish is long and luscious with hints of ripe fruit and French oak.

2015 MOUNT PEAK RATTLESNAKE ZINFANDEL 101 25A very inky dark wine with a very juicy quality. It’s layered with rich and robust fruit with flavours of plum, black cherry and blueberry together with black pepper, licorice and cocoa dust. A very rich and textured wine.

2015 MOUNT PEAK SENTINAL CABERNET 127 32 Savory aromas mix with lavender and dark fruit, leading to a rich mouthfeel with waves of dark cherry, blackberry and a touch of spice. This is a mouth filling wine with full tannins and intense concentrated fruit.
