JOAN OF ARC PART 1 - Synopsis

Joan  of  Arc’s  humble  roots  begin  in  Domrémy,  a  small  peasant  town  in  southern  France,  during  the  Hundred  Years’  War.    Joan’s  father  almost  kills  her  at  birth,  because  he  believes  a  daughter  cannot  do  the  man’s  work  that  is  needed.    However,  Joan  is  spared  and  grows  up  a  clever  and  defiant  child,  always  seeking  equal  privilege  to  her  brothers.  Her  life,  and  the  fate  of  her  country,  begins  to  change  when  she  experiences  visions  and  voices  of  Saints  Catherine,  Michael,  and  Margaret.  At  16,  Joan  leaves  her  family  and  village  on  her  divine  mission  to  help  the  Dauphin  Charles  gain  his  crown,  and  thus  unite  France  against  its  English  enemies.  Joan  is  assisted  on  her  journey  by  the  nobleman  Jean  de  Metz  and  his  band  of  merry  men.  After  a  perilous  journey,  Joan  enters  The  Dauphin’s  court  attired  in  men’s  clothing  and  cropped  hair.  The  female  warrior  earns  Charles’  blessing  to  fight  the  English,  but  only  after  she  agrees  to  assume  the  identity  of  the  Maid  of  Lorraine.  “The  Maid”  was  a  legendary  heroine  who  is  prophesied  as  the  savior  of  France.  A  small  army  of  soldiers  intensely  devoted  to  the  Maid  follow  Joan  into  battle  at  Orléans.  Joan  puts  her  life  on  the  line  for  her  beliefs,  thus  inspiring  her  troops  for  a  potential  war  altering  victory!    

JOAN OF ARC PART 2 – Synopsis Joan  and  the  French  are  victorious  at  the  battle  of  Orléans.  She  stands  by  Charles’  side,  as  he  is  crowned  

King  at  the  Cathedral  in  Rheims.  However,  Joan  is  unaware  however,  that  the  new  monarch  has  no  interest  in  uniting  France.  Charles  has  made  a  treaty  with  Philip,  the  Duke  of  Burgundy,  which  puts  France’s  loyal  subjects  and  Joan’s  faithful  followers  at  the  mercy  of  the  English-­‐allied  Burgundians.    Joan  pressures  Charles  to  let  her  lead  an  army  to  liberate  Paris  from  the  rule  of  the  English  /  Burgundians.    Fearing  the  approaching  Maid,  the  Burgundians  flee  Paris,  but  its  citizens  refuse  to  accept  Charles  as  their  king.    With  a  growing  arrogance  and  bent  on  seeing  a  united  France,  Joan  leads  an  invasion  of  Paris.  However,  her  troops  suffer  a  devastating  defeat.    In  a  startling,  manipulative  political  maneuver,  Charles  sets  a  trap  for  Joan  to  be  captured  by  the  Burgundians.    Madame  de  Beaurevoir,  a  powerful  Burgundian  and  mother  of  Philip,  protects  the  imprisoned  Joan  in  hopes  that  the  Maid  will  switch  sides  and  fight  for  Burgundy.  However,  when  Madame  de  Beaurevoir  dies  from  the  plague,  Joan  is  turned  over  to  the  English,  who  accuse  her  of  witchcraft  and  put  her  on  trial  at  Rouen.  Despite  coercion  from  Bishop  Cauchon,  Charles’  former  spiritual  advisor,  and  Brother  John  Le  Maitre,  the  dreaded  deputy  of  France’s  Holy  Inquisition,  Joan  holds  true  to  her  beliefs.  The  19-­‐year-­‐old  Joan  is  burned  at  the  stake  for  heresy,  This  ended  her  short  life,  but  not  her  extraordinary  place  in  history.  In  fact,  25  years  late,  she  was  found  not  guilty  by  Charles.  Then,  nearly  500  years  after  her  death,  Joan  of  Arc  was  declared  a  saint  as  people  claimed  her  heart  never  burned!

Facts about Joan of Arc Joan actually spelled her name “Jehanne.” The French refer to her as Jeanne d’Arc. They also call her “la Pucelle,” meaning “the Maid.” The real Joan of Arc had brown eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion.

No one knows what secret sign Joan gave to Charles as proof that she received messages from God. One theory is that she told Charles who his true father was, which was unknown.

Joan never killed anyone, even in battle. Two of Joan’s brothers, Jean and Pierre, fought by her side at the battle of Orléans.

Joan made all of the soldiers who served under her go to confession. She also insisted that they could not swear.

The actual battle of Orléans lasted three days. King Charles rewarded Joan for her bravery by raising her and her family to the position of nobility and by exempting Domrémy from paying taxes.

Joan had the ability to see into the future. The English paid the Duke of Burgundy 10,000 francs for Joan, a sum equivalent to several hundred thousand dollars today. In medieval witch trials, almost anything was used to persuade someone to confess, including torture and deceit. Joan’s trial lasted three months, from late February to late May, in 1431. On July 7, 1456, twenty five years after Joan’s death, Charles found Joan not guilty of the original charges, leaving her reputation “washed clean... absolutely.” Four years after Joan’s death, the Duke of Burgundy acknowledged his old enemy, Charles, as the king of France. The Hundred Years’ War lasted another 18 years. Charles succeeded in uniting France, as Joan had believed he would.

The citizens of Orléans still celebrate May 7 in honor of Joan’s victory and liberation of their city. Little is known about the real Joan of Arc, although many writers and historians have developed their own views of her. Some believe that Joan’s male clothing was a sign of her membership in a witch cult or that she was psychotic and subject to hallucinations. Since she spoke so eloquently at her trial, some believe that Joan came from royal blood, while others believe that she was an illegitimate half-sister to Charles.

Choice Boards – In order to show your knowledge and comprehension about Joan of Arc, choose one of the activities (#1-18) to complete. If you have an alternate idea, please let me know! You can do more than 1 for extra credit!!!

1. Create a chronological timeline that includes at least 12 of the most important events in the life of Joan of Arc. Show her relevance to the Hundred Years War and be sure to “dress up” your visual presentation with images to help create a better understanding of the timeline.

2. Draw or paint a portrait of Joan of Arc and add eight important quotes from the movie. You should note who said the quotes to create a better understanding!

3. Sing a song or create a rap to summarize the important events in the movie or the life of the heroine – Joan of Arc. *Be sure to do a great job and put in the same amount of work you would put into a writing assignment.

4. Construct a poster / persuasive advertisement for Joan of Arc’s trial. Choose the side of the English that she should be found guilty or the French that she is innocent! Be sure to include the appropriate amount of information to give evidence for your poster or advertisement.

5. Role play as a reporter at the Joan of Arc trial. You are to do a two – part story. First you will write a story summarizing the trial. Second, you will write an editorial choosing a side as to whether her burning at the stake was warranted or not. Remember be sure to note if you are an English or French writer!

6. With a partner, create a short skit about Joan’s trial. The information in the skit will show your knowledge about the life and death of Joan of Arc. (Could be done as a video!) *Be sure to do a great job and put in the same amount of work you would put into a writing assignment

7. Write a journal pretending you are Joan of Arc on her journey into battle and then through her capture and trial. Give descriptive details of your journey including dates, your experiences, feelings and how you have been treated by others.

8. Create a set of 20 trading cards that deal with the characters and settings in the movie. You will need to put the name or location on the front and have at least 2 – 3 facts on the back explaining their importance.

9. Many religions have martyrs who died for their spiritual beliefs. Joan could be considered to be a martyr for France. Make a collage of words or images that portray the beliefs and events associated with Joan of Arc, the Hundred Years War, Joan’s trial and death as well as Joan being canonized as a saint! *Should be neat / colorful

10. Explain how Joan challenged the expectations of the ways a woman should behave, as well as how her character changes and develops over time throughout the movie.

11. Charles insisted that Joan pretend to be the Maid of Lorraine. Tell why this ploy started as an advantage to Joan and Charles but how it also served as a detriment as well. Give a number of specific examples in order to clearly explain the advantages and disadvantages.

12. How does the sound track affect the feeling of a scene? Choose at least three scenes that are accompanied by music. Describe the feeling of the music and fully explain how it adds to the scenesand be thorough as to what is happening in each scene.

13. Early in the movie, Father Monet summarized the Battle of Agincourt – one of the major conflicts of the Hundred Years War. Explain fully - who fought in this battle, what they were fighting for, and why was one side able to win so easily? How did the outcome lead to Joan’s mission and how did the French and La Hire feel about the lopsided battle?

14. Joan is accused of being a witch by the English and a heretic by the French. Imagine that you are the judge at Joan’s trial. Write a position paper about whether whether or not you believe she is guilty using specific examples and explanation.

15. During medieval times, there was a constant power struggle between the church and kings. Who would you say is more in charge in the mini series: The King or the Church? Give numerous examples with explanation and evidence to support your answer!

16. Movies like books contain a certain point of view that influences how a story is told. How would JOAN OF ARC differ if it were told from the English point of view? Give the full story!

17. Design a game to show the journey of Joan of Arc from Domremy to her trial at Rouen. The game board should reflect the journey and the important events.

18. Create a Prezi or Powerpoint about the life of Joan of Arc. Be sure to have important events and people in her life. Use visuals and information you have learned to emphasize your points.
