EDUCATIONAL GOALS

We Supply The Adventures…You Supply The Inquiring Minds!

Our goal is to make your visit an exciting adventure in Florida history and culture. Our programs are designed to complement your classroom curriculum while engaging, inspiring, stimulating and motivating your students to THINK and LEARN. As your students enter the world of one ethnic group, they will experience a journey of self-awareness about their own heritage.

The Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU, while inspired by Jewish history in Florida, provides programs that resonate with all communities and all learners. The Museum depicts the immigrant experience and acculturation process of everyone’s family; a shared experience as illustrated through our exhibitions, public programs and collection of primary sources. Our educational programs are rooted in the benchmarks and desired outcomes of the Florida State Standards and adopted Common Core Standards.

THE FACILITY The Museum is housed in two former restored synagogue buildings, both on the National Register of Historic Places built in 1929 and 1936. The location of our Museum buildings south of Fifth Street was due to the fact that at that time, Jews were not allowed to live north of Fifth Street due to restrictive covenants. This itself is a powerful teaching tool to discuss discrimination with students. These buildings served as home to Miami Beach’s first Jewish congregation. In addition to both buildings’ value as cultural resources, they also provide an exemplary opportunity for classroom discussion of architecture, design, aesthetic principles, and sense of community.

CORE EXHIBIT, FILMS & SCAVENGER HUNT

MOSAIC: Jewish Life in Florida

Guided Tour (Recommended for Grades 3-12) Explore Florida Jewish history from 1763 to the present through the immigrant experience. Students are guided through the history of one ethnic group’s contributions to Florida’s history, illustrated through artifacts and primary sources, learning lessons of cultural diversity in a museum setting.

Films A choice of two 20-minute films are included in the tour. • Four Families (recommended for Grades 3-8)

Focuses on the diverse experiences of families who immigrated to Florida from different countries and time periods, as examples of the acculturation process of all families.

• Jewish Life in Florida (recommended for Grades 9-12) Highlights the contributions of Jewish Floridians to the development of the state, as inspiring examples for all students.

Jewish Life in Florida Scavenger Hunt (Recommended for grades 3-8) Students are provided with a list of questions about Jewish life in Florida. The answers can be found among the artifacts, photos, maps, films and letters of our core exhibit. Students may work individually or together on teams to hunt for answers and, afterward, come together to share their findings. This activity provides a student-centered, inquiry based, educational experience that places the learning in the students’ hands.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

VISION 20/20: Looking Back/Looking Forward JMOF 20th Anniversary Highlights from the Museum’s Collection of Florida Jewish History ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 25, 2015 Don’t miss the final days of this exhibit…. BOOK NOW! Students gain inspiration from the innovative, and courageous pioneers in our state as well as today’s “movers and shakers.” This exhibit tells the stories of those whose dauntless vision and spirit often transcended limitations and circumstances of their backgrounds including language, war and economic barriers to make a difference in their communities.

Fun Facts: George Dzialynski was the first Jewish boy born in Florida to a family that planted roots in the state and has continued to live here as Jews since 1850. See his grammar school report card from more than 150 years ago, with his commendation for “Amicable Conduct and General Obedience!” Dr. Kevin Kaplan (right) was born in Jacksonville and realized his childhood dream when he became the Head Team Physician for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars. See his NFL commemorative ball and keepsake! See a 1925 postcard (below) depicting “Peppe’s Pool” in Daytona Beach. The salt water swimming pool by the sea built by Harry Pepper pumped water from the ocean!

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION THE SEVENTH DAY: Revisiting Shabbat ON VIEW THROUGH NOVEMBER 15, 2015 In many cultures, the Sabbath is considered a day of rest. In an era when technology and culture have eroded the boundaries separating work, play and relaxation, this exhibit presents contemporary artists’ depictions of the 'day of rest.' It serves as an instructive, practical and refreshing connection to traditional community values and challenges students to “turn off tech” and experience the world around them.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION MARK PODWAL: All this Has Come Upon Us NOVEMBER 10, 2015 - MARCH 13, 2016 With everything happening today in our own communities across the country and throughout the world, people often express the feeling that, “things have never been so bad.” This exhibit offers a message of hope, inspiration and survival. It inspires students to explore how to rise above the challenges they confront in their own lives.

(Above) Podwal’s depiction of the Jews’ expulsion from Spain, 1492. Psalm 119:54 Your laws are songs to me wherever I may live.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain expelled from their lands the largest and most distinguished Jewish community in Europe. Jews who converted to Catholicism were welcome to stay, if not they had to leave the country or they would be killed.

ANNUAL CREATIVE WRITING/VISUAL ARTS CONTEST Submission deadline: Friday, November 15, 2015

For All Florida Students in Grade 6-12

The theme for this year’s contest is inspired by our exhibition

MARK PODWAL: All This Has Come Upon Us The goal for this contest is to help expand the reach of the exhibit beyond the walls of the Museum. It will prompt even those who may not be able to visit to think about how “surviving difficulties” informs personal identity and is inspired by heritage. Our student contests typically result in entries from all over the state – from Apalachicola to Zephyrhills! Writing prompt: Find a quote that inspires hope or alludes to the theme of survival. Incorporate this quote into either a creative writing or visual arts piece, as you depict both: 1) An incident when you, or someone you know, experienced a difficult time

and 2) How you or the individual overcame the challenging situation.

All Florida students are invited to submit one creative writing piece OR visual arts representation using the prompt above (maximum 500 words). Winners receive cash prizes, a free field trip for

their class and are invited to the awards ceremony on December 13, 2015.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION Discovery and Recovery: Preserving Iraqi Jewish Heritage DECEMBER 3, 2015 THROUGH FEBRUARY 14, 2016 Join us for a once in a lifetime glimpse into a limited run exhibit on display in only six select institutions in the country. In partnership with the National Archives who painstakingly restored each of the objects the exhibit details the dramatic recovery of historic materials relating to the Jewish community in Iraq from a flooded basement in Saddam Hussein's intelligence headquarters. This exhibit provides the opportunity for students to gain insights, through artifacts and documents, regarding the importance of preserving cultural heritage—our communities and our own “family memories.”

Discovery and Recovery is divided into six sections:

Discovery: The dramatic story of how these materials were found. A short film captures these efforts.

Text and Heritage: This section explores Iraqi Jewish history and tradition through recovered texts, including a Hebrew Bible with Commentaries from 1568, and a Babylonian Talmud from 1793.

Iraqi Jewish Life: Constancy and Change: This section explores the pattern of Jewish life in Iraq.

Personal and Communal Life: Original documents and facsimiles in flipbooks range from school primers to international business correspondence and illustrate the range and complexity of Iraqi Jewish life in the 19th and 20th centuries.

After the Millennia: Iraqi Jews were stripped of their citizenship and assets and the community fled the country en masse. This section includes materials about the 1951 law of freezing assets of Iraqi Jews.

Preserving the Past: View the National Archives' state-of-the-art treatment, preservation, and digitization of these materials.

(Above) Tik (Torah case) and Glass Panel from Baghdad, 19th-20th centuries. In Jewish

communities throughout the Middle East, the Torah scroll is generally housed in a rigid "tik," or case

made of wood or metal.

FLORIDA JEWISH HISTORY MONTH

JANUARY 2016

Diverse cultures have enriched our State since early times. Each January, we celebrate Florida Jewish History Month, highlighting the contributions of one ethnic group in shaping the destiny of Florida. In 2003, the Jewish Museum of Florida initiated Florida legislation to honor the indelible impact of Floridian Jews on our State’s history. Since 1763, when Jews were first allowed to live in Florida, they have maintained the traditions of their heritage and contributed to our State in every sector. Florida Jewish History Month is a time to learn how Jews have been involved in enriching the lives and dreams of all Floridians. The Museum provides educational materials to complement your existing curriculum including:

• Florida Jewish History fact sheets and activity guides

• Timeline of Florida Jewish history

• Lesson guide of important Florida Jewish History time periods and historical figures Visit our website for curriculum materials for Florida Jewish History Month www.jewishmuseum.com.

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION

CINEMA JUDAICA: THE EPIC CYCLE (1947-71) FEBRUARY 29, 2016 – OCTOBER 30, 2016

Hollywood films do more than entertain. They often re-tell history and help shape our understanding of daily life and events at the time a particular movie was made. They open avenues to learning in both subtle and direct ways.

Through an extraordinary collection of original posters and bold advertising materials for films ranging from Samson and Delilah and Ben-Hur, to Exodus and Fiddler on the Roof, students will recognize central themes of this period of American film history and benefit by comparing and contrasting with the dominant themes of today. These Hollywood films, in the three decades after World War II, include some of the biggest box office hits of all times. They serve to illustrate the transformation of the image of the Jew from embattled to triumphant.

Charlton Heston as Moses in The Ten Commandments (1956).

TEMPORARY EXHIBITION   SUSAN MILLER: TESTAMENT IN STONE MARCH 28, 2016 – OCTOBER 16, 2016 Susan Miller “sees” through stone. She has the ability to perceive and reveal, through the density of weighty blocks of marble, a form that is expressive with human dignity and energy. Students will be drawn to her sculptures that express both her spirit and the beauty of the human body. Miller’s relationship to biblical texts promotes discussion across subject and grade levels.

OUR MISSION & THE FIU CONNECTION

OUR MISSION The mission of the Jewish Museum of Florida-FIU is to collect, preserve and interpret the material evidence of the Florida Jewish experience from 1763 to the present for Jews, non-Jews, Florida residents and visitors alike. We seek to examine how Jews form part of a dynamic mosaic of ethnic groups: all seeking to balance the continuity and traditions of their heritage with the values and customs of a larger society. Our focus is to explore the richness, diversity, complexities and legacies of the Jewish contributions in Florida, historically and culturally within the nation and throughout the world. We strive to illuminate the diversity that exists in Florida by providing a lens through which history can be viewed by everyone.

THE FIU CONNECTION

In December 2012, Jewish Museum of Florida and Florida International University forged a historic partnership that leverages the resources of the museum and FIU. This partnership ignites a new era of interdisciplinary education and research, focused on the history of the Jewish experience in Florida, the ways in which Florida Jews influence and are influenced by the cultural dynamics of Florida, the nation, and the world, and issues of discrimination against all peoples in Florida throughout history. The museum’s historical collections, research library, exhibitions and programs augment an academic plan that focuses on the museum’s and FIU’s shared missions of education, research and outreach.
