    About the Marquis JM60/JM120

The Johnson Marquis JM60 and JM120 are truly two of the most f lexible amplifiers in the world. They put 18 different amp models at your

finger t ips el iminating the n eed for several differe nt am ps in or der to get differe nt tone s. In ad dit ion to al l of this tona l versa t il ity, the

JM60/JM120 include an effects sect ion offering up to three effects at once. Use these to add color and flavor to your sound. For ease of

operat ion, the JM60/JM120 have been divided in to two sections: the Amp and the Effects sect ions.

Amp SectionThe amp section of the JM60/JM120 is located on the left half of the faceplate. I t is comprised of 18 different amplifier models which can be

instantly accessed by the press of any of the three amp model buttons. Each successive press of the same button wil l select the next amp type

within that part icular modeling group. The Amp section also includes the same type of gain and tone controls that you would find on typical

amp l ifiers . These co nt rol s are the m aster volume, gain , t reble , mid, bass , presence ( only on the JM120 ) and level cont rol s . These bu t tons

and kno bs a l l work in con junct ion wi th each o ther to pr ovide you wi th your b as ic tone .

Effects SectionThe effects sect ion o f the JM60/JM120 is on the r ight half of the faceplate. I t includ es the Mo d/Pitch, the Delay, and the Reverb . Each

succ essive p ress of the Select bu tton of a given effect gro up will select the n ext type of effect within that gro up . All of these effects h ave

dedicated knobs which adjust various aspects of the related effects. Any of the three effects may be individually bypassed by pressing andholding the cor r espon ding Select but ton.

Performance ModeWhen the JM60/JM120 i s fi r s t powered up, the num er ic di splay ( on the far r ight corner ) wil l indicate the cur rent ly ac t ive Bank and Preset

number. The current amp model and active effect types wil l be indicated by their respective LEDs. All knobs and buttons are available for

modifying the current program. However, the knobs do not necessari ly reflect the actual set t ing of the corresponding effect . After turning any

    kno b a t l eas t one whole n um ber , the r e la ted p aram eter wi ll reflec t the k nob s new set t ing.

    Chorus

A chorus is an effect that spl i ts the incoming signal , and adds a short delay to one half of the signal . This short delay t ime (determined by the

depth c ont rol ) i s then mo dula ted , which i s to say that it speeds u p an d s lows down the delay. The changing delay time takes the d elayed

signal in and out of tune with the original signal . This tends to make the guitar sound thicker and sweeter.

Speed - The speed kno b wi l l adjus t how fas t the cho rus wil l modula te .

Depth - The depth knob wil l adjust the intensi ty of the chorus effect .

    Flanger

A flanger is an effect that spl i ts the incoming signal , and adds a short delay to one half of the signal . This short delay t ime then speeds up and

    s lows down a t a s teady, even p ace . The di fferenc e between a chor us an d a flanger i s tha t a fl anger uses a shor ter delay t ime than a chor us ,

and a f langer ad ds severa l repeats to thi s shor t de lay time. This gives the gui tar a d efined up and down sweeping, or who oshing soun d.

Speed - The speed knob wil l adjust how fast the f langer wil l sweep up and down.

Depth - The d epth kn ob will adjust the o vera l l intensi ty of the f langer effect .

    Phaser

A phaser is an effect that spl i ts the incoming signal , and then changes the phasing of one the signals. This signal is then modulated in and

out of phase and mixed back in with the original signal . This causes certain frequencies to be cancelled. As the phasing changes, differentfrequencies get canceled result ing in a warm sort of twist ing sound.

Speed - The speed kn ob a djus t s how fas t the phase i s being changed.

Depth - The depth knob adjusts the intensi ty of the phasing effect .

    Tremolo

A tremolo is an effect that modulates the volume of the incoming signal at a steady, even pace. The incoming signal wil l go back and forth,

gett ing louder and softer . I t would be kind o f l ike h aving a motor on your gui tars volum e kn ob which increased an d d ecreased the volume a t

an e ven r ate. Tremo lo Level is not available o n the JM60 .

Speed - The speed knob adjusts how fast the volume wil l f luctuate.

Depth - The de pth k no b wil l adjust the intensi ty of the volum e fluctua tion

    Vibrato

A vibrato is an effect that mo du lates the freq uen cy, or pi tch o f the en tire inc om ing signal . This wil l take the who le signal slightly in and ou t of

tune at a stead y pace. Vibrato Level is no t available on the JM60.

Speed - The speed kno b ad jus ts how fas t the s ignal is be ing mo dula ted.

Depth - The depth kno b adjus t s the am oun t of pi tch chan ge.

    Pitch/Detune

Pitch shift ing is an e ffect that will mak e a c op y of you r inco ming signal , an d then shift the pi tch of the co py to a differe nt no te. This resu lts in

har mo ny. As you p lay on e no te the pi tch shifter is simu ltane ou sly playing a no te higher, or lower with you . I ts l ike h aving ano ther guitarist

in the band. The detune is an effect that can be added to the shifted pi tch to take i t sl ightly out of tune to make i t sound more as if i t were

rea lly two gu itarists, similar to a cho ru s type effect .

Speed - The speed knob adjusts the interval of the pi tch shifter . I t wil l determine how far above or below the input note

the sh ifted p i tch will be.

Depth - The depth kno b adjus t s the am oun t of detune.

JM120 Mod/Pitch Effects GroupThe Modulat ion and Pitch Shift ing effects group in the JM120 differs from that of the JM60. There are 9 effects to choose from in the JM120,

and there i s one addi t ional kn ob for adjus t ing par ameters in the gro up. The Mod /Pi tch ef fec t s group in the JM120 includes Chorus , Flange,

Phaser, Tremopan, Vibropan, Ring Modulator, Pi tch, Detune, and Rotary Speaker Simulator. Like the Mod/Pitch effects group on the JM60,

only one of these effects can be used at a t ime. To select an effect from the Mod/Pitch group, press the Mod/Pitch Select button unti l the LED

    Analog

Analog delay was the method originally used to electronically duplicate a tape delay. I t is characterized by the way each repeat degrades or

deteriorates from the original input signal .

    Delay

Delay is an effect that wil l record a port ion of the incoming signal , and then play i t back a short t ime later . I t can repeat the recording

several t imes, or just once. This type of effect is also referred to as an echo because i t basical ly echoes the original signal . This is a ful l band

width digital delay with no degradation of repeats.

    Ping Pong

A ping pong delay is an effect that wil l record a port ion of the incoming signal , and then repeat the recording a short t ime later . When i t

replays the re cord ed s ignal , the repe ats wil l bounce from s ide to s ide ( in s tereo) . This i s why it i s ca lled ping pon g, because the rep eats wil l

go back and for th from s ide to s ide .

Delay - Adjusts the volume of the delay effect.

Feedback - Adjusts ho w ma ny t ime s the d elay will repe at the signal .

Tap It - The Tap It button is used to set the delay t ime, or the amount of t ime between repeats. Tapping this button in t ime withthe mu sic wil l al ign the re pea ts of the delay in synchr on ization with the be at of the mu sic. Pressing an d ho lding the Tap It

    Plate

Plate reverb is an effect that was designed in recording studios in an at tempt to recreate an acoustic reverb. I t was a large metal plate that

had a dr iver a t tached to on e end of it , and a p ick up o n the o ther end . The s ignal was fed in to the dr iver , which in turn c aused the pla te to

vibra te . These vibra t ions were then r eceived by the pick up and fed b ack into the mix.

    Hall

The Hall reverb is an effect that simulates the acoustic environment of an actual room. I t gives the l istener the i l lusion that the music is being

per form ed in an e mp ty roo m. When a sou nd i s hear d in an em pty roo m i t reflec ts thousand s of times of f of the sur faces in the roo m su ch as

the walls and the f loor. Each reflect ion reaches the l istener at different t imes. This results in giving the sound a certain warmth and depth.

    Spring

A Spring reverb is another effect designed to try and recreate the ambiance of an acoustic reverb. I t was an actual spring. The signal was fed

in to one end of the sp r ing caus ing the sp r ing to vibra te . The s ignal was then taken ou t of the o ther end of the spr ing and m ixed b ack in to

    the signal .

Reverb - The reverb knob adjusts the volume of the reverb effect .

Stor ing/Copying a PresetAfter you have edi ted a prese t , you mu st save your n ew soun d o therwise the JM60/JM120 wil l e rase the chan ges that you had mad e and
