JKPL News Zentangle drawing class at your library LISA GAYLOR Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relax- ing method of creating beautiful im- ages from repetitive patterns. Many of the patterns are inspired by na- ture. Zentangle drawing can reduce stress and improve your focus. Tra- ditionally, Zentangle drawings are black and white and done on 3.5” by 3.5” paper squares with thin-tipped black pens. Pencil shading is used to add depth and dimension to the de- sign. Once the process and basic patterns are learned, the artist can create Zentangle-Inspired Art (ZIA). These might be larger, use color, and incorporate photos, po- etry, or favorite quotations in the design along with tra- ditional Zentangle patterns. This April, Dyersville resident, Dianne Kramer, will share this amazing art technique by teaching a three-part class at the library. Dianne has always loved many forms of art, but she could never find an art form that suited her. She admired painting, pottery, photography, and sketching — but decided that they weren’t for her. Then last October, while looking at an artist’s blog online, she saw a drawing that captivated her attention: it was a Zentangle. Since then, she has become passionate about creating Zentangles, and she is eager to share her passion with others. The three classes will be held Thursdays April 4, 11, and 18, from 6:30-8 p.m. Students will need to bring a No. 2 pencil and a thin-tipped black pen (size 01). These items can be purchased at almost any store selling office supplies for a minimal fee. Students do not need prior art experience. In the first class, Dianne will talk about the background of Zentangle: its creators, the benefits of this art form, and the process used to create it. The unique style and vocabulary of Zentangle will also be introduced. Then students will be given step-by-step instructions on how to create a Zentangle and an assign- ment to complete and bring back the next week. During the second class, students will learn more patterns and work on a project in class. For the third class, students will bring a poem, quotation, or favorite item to incor- porate into their own Zentangle-Inspired Artwork (ZIA). The slogan of Zentangle is “Anything is possible, one stroke at a time.” You can find out more about Zentangle and views photos at www.zentangle.com. Registration is required as class size is limited. You must attend the first class in order to attend the remaining classes. Please call the library or stop by to register.
