INTRODUCTION

Well NOCS 34/8-1 is situated in the Norwegian sector of theNorth Sea, north-east of the Gullfaks field. The total dril-led depth is 3610 m. The well is located at 6 1 ° 2 1 ' 5 3 . 5 0 " Nand 0 2 ° 2 5 f 5 7 . 5 7 " E in a water depth of 324 m. Elevation ofKelly Bushing ( K B ) was 23 m.- All depths are relative to KBunless otherwise specified. Samples were collected between450 m and 3610 m from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate inStavanger. A total of 290 samples was collected, washed(only the cuttings samples) and described. The analysedsection of the well is from 450 m to 3595 m with a samplinginterval of 5 m for the cuttings samples in the Jurassic andTriassic sections, 30 m in the Cretaceous section and avariable (about 2 m) sampling interval for the core-chipsamples. A careful selection of suitable samples wa's madefor screening analysis ( i . e . TOC and Rock-Eval analysis).Fifty-two samples were selected for this analysis, and fromthe data obtained samples were chosen for follow-upanalyses. These were:
