Pianist and Contemporary Jazz Superstar & his group return for big weekend at Nighttown!

Montreux-reared Bugnon studied at a music conservatory in Paris before coming to America tocontinue at Boston’s famed Berklee School of Music. He spent a lot of time playing not only jazzbut gospel, gigging on that time-honored southern circuit. Upon graduation he moved to NewYork. After spending a year driving taxicabs and teaching French at the Berlitz School, he foundinitial work backing R&B stars such as Patti Austin & James Ingram and Keith Sweat. It was throughbacking Freddie Jackson that he made the contact at then-new Orpheus Records where herecorded his first two CDs Love Season (1989) and Head Over Heels (1991), making his deepestfirst impressions with R&B audiences as a soulful instrumentalist du jour. A switch to Sony’s EpicRecords family yielded 107 Degrees in the Shade (1991) and This Time Around (1993), uponwhich time he jumped to RCA Records for Tales from the Bright Side (1995). From there hesegued into the four albums he did for Narada Records, an associated label that specialized in

Duke Robillard $20.00 Sunday 12/04 7:00 pm Buy Tickets

Top Flight Blues from Providence, Rhode Island, with virtuoso guitarist DukeRobillard and his Band Live at Nighttown! The Blues Music Awards have named Duke Robillard "Best Blues Guitarist" four years out of five(2000,2001,2003,2004) making him the second most honored guitarist for that award! He wasalso nominated in that category in 2005, 2007 and again this year of 2008.

In 2007 Duke received a Grammy nomination for his "Guitar Groove-a-rama" CD and was alsohonored with the prestigious Rhode Island Pell Award for "excellence in the arts" along withactress Olympia Dukakis, actor Bob Colonna, and R.I. Choreographer/Festival Ballet directorMihailo "Misha" Djuric. Other awards over the last decade include three Canadian Maple Blues Awards in 2001, 2002, and2003 for "Best International Blues Artist," The Blues Foundation's "Producer of the Year" award in2004, The French Blues Association "Album of the Year" award in 2002 (Living with the Blues) and"Guitarist of the Year" awards in 1999 and 2002.

BB King himself has called Duke "One of the great players," The Houston Post called him "one ofGod's guitarists. And the New York Times says "Robillard is a soloist of stunning force andoriginality.

None of that goes to Robillard’s head. He’s still on the road, still playing as many as 250 dates ayear. And still proving, night after night, that his true talent is bringing people out to hear themusic, appreciate the show, and dance to the blues.

Duke had his first band in high school — he was born in Woonsocket, Rhode Island — and he wasfascinated from the beginning by the ways in which jazz, swing, and the blues were linked. In 1967,he formed Roomful of Blues, and the band was tight enough and tough enough to accompany twoof its heroes, Big Joe Turner and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson on record and in live appearances.

Always ahead of his time, Duke’s first band pre-dated the renewed interest in jump blues by morethan a decade — and almost 20 years later, in 1986, when he recorded with jazz sax master ScottHamilton, he recorded a collection of classic big band tunes from the ’30s and ’40s, thus skillfullypre-dating the neo-Swing craze of the mid ’90s.

Roomful of Blues — which still continues, forty years later — gave Duke his first exposure to a widepublic, and when he left after a dozen years, he played briefly with rockabilly king Robert Gordon, then cut two albums with the Legendary Blues Band (a sterling collection of former members ofMuddy Waters’ band). He led his own band until 1990, and then replaced Jimmy Vaughan in theFabulous Thunderbirds.

He has found time to share studio gigs with Bob Dylan (the Daniel Lanois-produced Time Out ofMind sessions), Ruth Brown, the late Johnny Adams, John Hammond, Pinetop Perkins, and RonnieEarl, among many others. He now has his own 24-track studio in his home, and he has becomedeeply involved in graphic design and photography as well as record production.

Duke Robillard is a man in command of a full range of creative talents — unique in the blues, andrare in the music industry as a whole. He is, in fact, a complete artist at the height of his power.

Vanessa Rubin has neverexperienced such travails. with All-Star Lineup!

Featuring: Eddie Baccus Sr.-Hammond B-3 Organ, Mike Cady-Vocals, CecilRucker-Vibes, Billy Artis-Guitar, Perry Williams III-Drums,More Special Guests TBA.One of the senior statesman of the Cleveland Jazz Scene, organist Eddie Baccus Sr. has set thestandard locally since the early 1960's. Like the late great Jimmy Smith, Baccus is a virtuoso onthe Hammond B-3, equally adept at soul jazz and bebop. In many ways Eddie Baccus Sr. has beento the jazz scene what the late Robert Jr. Lockwood was to the local blues scene; he has been aleader, mentor, and the soul of the community for many years.

Early on his talent was evident as he was linked with another jazz legend, saxophonist Roland Kirk. Baccus and Kirk were schoolmates at the Ohio School of the Blind and their sessions together inthe old Euclid and 105th area are the stuff of local legends. Kirk would go on to national acclaimbefore his untimely death in the late 70's. Baccus stayed close to home and it has been our goodfortune.

Eddie Baccus Sr. has been a mentor to countless Cleveland jazz musicians, notably Joe Lovano,Ernie Krivda, and more recently his son, Eddie Baccus Jr.. His work has only been documentedinfrequently. He recorded an LP with Kirk back in 1962 "Feel Real" on Smash records. His otherrecording is a session done with Lovano in the mid 1980's entitled "Hometown Sessions". Although he has not gone on to greater glory playing the national circuit, Eddie Baccus Sr. hasbeen the bedrock of the Cleveland jazz scene and his influence on fans and musicians alike hasbeen invaluable. Joining Eddie Baccus Sr. for his appearance at Nighttown will be an All-Star Cleveland lineup. Theyare Cecil Rucker on the Vibes. Eddie Sr. has frequently appeared with Cecil's group Good Vibes. Billy Artis is on guitar. Many will remember Billy from his days backing the late great Bill Doggettat the Theatrical in downtown Cleveland. Perry Williams III is on drums. Perry is a veteran on thesoul jazz circuit and has worked with Eddie Sr. and Cecil extensively. And on vocals is Ron Davis. Don't miss Hammond B-3 wizard Eddie Baccus Sr. & Friends live at Nighttown.

Dominick Farinacci $40.00 Saturday 12/31 7:30 pm Buy Tickets

Trumpet Star & Group Plays Music from his new CD "Short Stories" live onNighttown's Back Patio Stage in exciting New Year's Celebration!

Seating Limited get Tickets Quickly!Dominick Farinacci recently released his Mack Avenue Records debut, "Short Stories" -- acompelling suite of music with a repertoire that spans genres and generations united by thetrumpeter/composer's soulful conception. Bringing together songs from Tom Waits, Horace Silver,Dianne Reeves and the Gipsy Kings as well as original compositions, Farinacci has managed tocreate his own musical universe, aided by musicians of the highest caliber. All of the songs have anarrative that any listener can relate to.

Farinacci had already achieved enough stature by his mid-teens that Wynton Marsalis offered tohelp him set his sights on coming to New York, and by 2001, Farinacci was one of only fourtrumpeters in the world to be selected as the inaugural students in The Juilliard School's first jazzcurriculum. During his school years and afterwards, Farinacci immediately distinguished himselfas a soloist/bandleader/composer with a vision.

Soon thereafter, Farinacci was named the first Global Ambassador for Jazz at Lincoln Center andtraveled to Qatar where his world expanded beyond his wildest dreams. Throughout the two yearsthat Farinacci spent there, he broadened his activities to include dozens of different projects,

Page 27: Jim Wadsworth Enjoy lifeit's music at Nighttown! Hope you ...live.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_3-2016.11.15.01.11.archive.pdf · 11/21 Oleg Kruglyakov & Vadim Kolpakov 11/22 Mike, Jim,

that Farinacci spent there, he broadened his activities to include dozens of different projects, where the goal was, through his music and outreach activities, to unite communities andovercome barriers of every sort.

Life itself has many different sorts of mentorship built into it. A life in the arts can't exist withoutthese kinds of relationships, and Short Stories is the fruit of the coming together of two kindredspirits, Farinacci and LiPuma, from the same home town (Cleveland, Ohio), separated by justunder half a century in age. What unites them is a clear, moern aesthetic vision that combines thehighest musical standards with a desire to be agents of change.

LiPuma's credits as a producer are far too numerous to list here; suffice it to say he has played anessential role in the sound of the last 50 years, with 35 albums certified gold or platinum, fourGRAMMY® Award wins and 33 nominations. If you have heard Sir Paul McCartney, BarbraStreisand, Miles Davis, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Dave Mason, Diana Krall and Dr. John--youhave heard Mr. LiPuma's work.

Amazingly, Farinacci found time during his Middle East years to also play an integral role in theconception and build out of Cuyahoga Community College's Tommy LiPuma Center for CreativeArts.

There are so many superlatives thrown around these days that they seem to have lost their effect;but as this unique and deeply grounded album sinks into your consciousness, you will undoubtedlycome to the conclusion that Dominick Farinacci is not only one of the truly outstanding musiciansof his generation, but also that what is behind the music is nothing short of miraculous. InFarinacci's own words: "While Short Stories is the title of this particular recording, it has come torepresent a culmination of things I'm most passionate about - performance, education, music &wellness and community-based cultural collaborations - unfolding in the music and touring aroundthe world."

Abe LaMarca

Northern soul music has been the driving and motivating musical force behind this powerfulvocalist since he was a teenager growing up in Cleveland Ohio in the late 60’s. He has recentlyreturned back home after living and performing in Las Vegas.

Abe LaMarca is also a proud member of the highly respected stable of singers and musiciansoften referred to as the “Crown Jewel” of Las Vegas, Santa Fe and The Fat City Horns.

Abe grew up on a steady diet of sophisticated soul and jazz music well beyond his years. He wasinfluenced by Dinah Washington, Jackie Wilson, Dave Brubeck and Little Richard to name a few. The height of his young career as a local singer was to land a huge gig with one of Cleveland'smost memorable horn bands, Rastus. It was at this time he was schooled by these older andhipper cats, most of all, tenor sax player, Vic Walkuski. "Whenever you started to feel cool andcocky about how good you were, Vic would pull out some obscure soul record with these amazingsingers to knock you back down to earth. Most notable was an album by "The Blind Boys ofAlabama". I decided then and there that if I was gonna be respected I would have to strive to thatlevel".

After leaving the band he spent time in LA singing demos and working for songwriters Gerry Goffinand Michael Masser. In the 80's Scottie Bros/CBS Records released "LaMarca", a solo endeavorthat found this soul lover singing some catchy pop songs, a few of which made it to the big screen, most notably, "Hold on Blue Eyes" from the movie "The Wraith" starring Charlie Sheen. Hedevoted the 90's to raising his kids in Cleveland and singing radio jingles and T.V. commercials. In2005, Abe decided to make the move to Las Vegas where he worked at just about every hotel onand off The Strip with various bands and show projects.

Abe's current cd, “Stand and Deliver” is receiving much praise at Smooth Jazz Radio.
