taoists don’t trust words
Jill Joy’s paintings are her effort to bring into existence her interpretation of spirituality. She expresses
that these are representations of her own spiritual evolution. When looking at Jill’s paintings, I find I
connect with them. Being a philosophical Taoist, I understand the concept. Taoists don’t trust words.
They are incomplete and are only a representation of the thing. They are not the thing itself and so
cannot show us reality, they can only imperfectly, describe it. It is the difference between knowledge
and knowing. Jill’s paintings in this series also are not the thing itself but are a much more honest
and direct representation of her spiritual reality.
Her colors are vibrant. Her application, is studied and purposeful yet easy and expressive. Even her
work in black and white doesn’t seem dull or pedantic but alive and energetic. The concept of
emergence of the concrete from the nebulous field of unformed potential attracts.
The duality she speaks of in her artist’s statement, between conscious and unconscious awareness,
between the individual and universal mind, is quite evident in her technique. Placing abstract
concrete forms on top of the more amorphous and gentle field of color displays this idea well. Action
and passivity are both present in her painting style. The passive smooth universal field is yet active in
its bands of changing color even when they are different tones of the same hue. The concrete forms
she uses have areas that are just as passive even when they are surrounded by the more energetic
impastos. A kind of yin containing yang and yang containing yin.

artist’s statement
My personal growth and spiritual evolution inspire my work as does my proximity to the ocean and
especially the horizon. Lately I’ve been finding more and more connection between the inner and
outer world as I dissolve the boundaries of my ego. I am at heart a mystic; this work is spiritual
experience made material.
The Consciousness Series is an expression of the unseen worlds of spiritual and emotional
energy and their interplay as the individual soul evolves towards a higher state of consciousness.
The paintings sometimes move from dark to light representing the movement from unconscious to
conscious awareness. They are a snapshot of mental and emotional experience time and space, the
mind aware of itself in a field of universal love. The paintings are executed in a meditative trance
and thus become meditative objects, contemporary mandalas.
This work references the sky and sea as metaphors for universal consciousness within which the
individual soul experiences and evolves. In all my work blank canvas plays a special role, a reminder
of the universal field of love against which each of us plays our human drama. Special techniques I
developed with oil paint and mediums create luminous surfaces that change with the light as the sky
changes with the trajectory of the sun and as the mind changes with the nature of thought.
I look up and I see the sky.
It becomes part of me.
My feelings like clouds
against the clear blue vastness,
scudding across the backdrop of
infinite consciousness.
I look out and I see the ocean.
It becomes part of me.
My memories like islands
in a sea of universal mind.

A wave.
has crashed through my life
Separated me
from what has tormented me
and sustained me
I sit here in the silence
in the receding tide
Wondering.
what will become of me

pro-social byproducts
Jill Joy’s beautiful paintings are reflections of the
soul. Her inspired contribution adds to the
betterment of our homes and community.
Beauty manifested through art allows our
collective consciousnesses to advance by
positive influence.
These pro-social byproducts elicit Joy, Jill’s
namesake; and Love, the universal energy/
intention elucidated upon by all religious and
spiritual traditions.

This work is striking;
the off-center void allows
my eye to rest on something;
my mind to contemplate.
It is like a window, and the
seemingly perfect white of
the void provides a sense of
the infinite.
