What level of courses should your student take?• What are the choices? Level, Honors, Advanced

Placement (AP) • What is the teacher’s advisement? • What are your student’s past and current grades?• How much time will be required for course success?• How much time is your student willing/able to devote to

course success?

Page 12: Jill Houser, Principal · 2020-02-13 · 2020-2021 Course Registration Complete the online registration located in Parent Access (PAC)/ Student Access (SAC) by February 7, 2020. This

More factors to consider in selecting courses…

• How much time will your student be spending on other things? (school activities, church, clubs, etc.)

• Why is your student choosing this particular level of course?

• How many Honors or AP classes are in your student’s schedule?

• How does your student manage time, organize work, and meet deadlines?

Honors and AP, what does that mean? Honors courses help prepare students for

the AP courses later. These courses are more rigorous than a level course.

AP courses are college level courses. The students can take the AP exam in May and earn college credit depending on their score and what the college accepts. Students register and pay for AP exams in the Fall.S

HOW MUCH HOMEWORK??

Honors and AP class expectations require students to:• focus on challenging concepts and terminology • place emphasis on the quality of work • thoroughly analyze for understanding (this may

require re-reading a text)• be able to complete classwork and homework

independently • independently read texts and take tests/quizzes

on material not specifically presented in class

TEACHER ADVISEMENTS• Core & foreign language teachers made advisements

for next year based on current work ethic, attendance and academic discipline demonstrated this school year.

• Parents will be able to view teacher advisements in the 4 Year Plan.

• These advisements are a guide; however, parent and student make the final decision of course choice.

Schedule Change RequestsYour student’s choices are considered a year-long commitment as our master schedule is built on the courses they have chosen prior to April 24th.

If a student is experiencing difficulty in an Honors or AP class, the student should attend tutorials and also take advantage of our re-test options. A teacher-parent-student meeting may also be scheduled to discuss ways your student can be successful.

Any changes made to a student’s schedule could impact the entire schedule and result in other unexpected teacher or class changes.

4 Year Plan TipsYear One of their 4 year plan are the course requests for next year

• If a course is grayed out that means it is somewhere else in the four year plan and must be removed to be added in another year.

and/or

• That course can not be taken that school year.

• If your student started their High School math sequence in Junior High they will find their fifth or sixth Math course under STEM.

• Students MUST put in alternates. There are times when courses are offered at the same time and we can not schedule a course. If no alternates are entered, the counselor will have to select a course for them.
