Family Promise

As we complete another hosting of the Family Promise Hawai’i Program with the Honolulu District of the Hongwanji Mission of Hawai’i, which includes the Hawaii Betsuin, Jikoen, Moiliili and Windward (Kailua) temples, I would like to thank all of our supporters and volunteers.

This community outreach program supports and benefits homeless families with children by providing a safe place to sleep and two meals per day at a host temple or church. During this past year, Family Promise Hawaii has provided safe shelter to hundreds of individuals and thousands of meals.

Volunteers from participating inter-faith temples and churches in the Honolulu and Windward areas have worked hard to make this program a continued success.

The Family Promise program and centers in the Honolulu and Windward areas also provides social services, basic laundry, locker space, financial and employment

counseling. It also helped families to secure permanent housing in the community as well as connect families with health care and other services.

Next year, Jikoen Hongwanji Temple looks forward again to hosting Family Promise in our Social Hall.

THANK YOU again to our Jikoen Family Promise Ohana for being supportive with your donations, suggestions, time, commitment and support!

Help Needed !If you have any special skills, experience or knowledge and can serve on any of the committees or help on any projects, we welcome your help. We are in need of volunteers to help us with ongoing projects and other simple tasks.

Please call the office at 845-3422, or email us at [email protected] if you are able to assist.

3 Jikoen Newsletter - August-September, 2019

Your kokua is needed for Family Promise of Hawaii. Please make a difference in the lives of families who have fallen onto hard times. All four temples of the Honolulu district have banded together to be participants in this program to help homeless families by providing overnight lodging for one week and meals (breakfast and dinner) for four to five families (up to 16 persons).

We will be hosting families at Jikoen Hongwanji Social Hall from August 11–18, 2019. These families will be using the Social Hall from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily.

Each morning, the families will go to work, school or the Family Promise Day Center where they meet with staff, care for young children, learn life skills and seek housing and employment.

Ways YOU can help in this all-important community-service project:

1. Donate food and supplies. 3. Stay overnight.2. Cook meals. 4. Make financial contributions

Bon Dance

Obon events kept us very busy during July! Volunteers worked tirelessly months in advance, from set up to clean up, and thanks to all of your efforts we had a successful 2019 Bon Dance.

Deepest gratitude to the Jikoen Buddhist Women’s Association and the Dharma School families, for taking charge of the food prep and sales.

The Sewing Ladies Circle surged the edges of the Bon Dance towels and with the help of other volunteers made red and white flags.

The Beautification team made sure the landscaping and grounds were clean, neat and beautiful. Weeks prior to the bon dance, volunteers power washed our temple areas.

Mahalo to Charlene Oshiro and Simon Soledad for preparing the delicious meals for our volunteers & performers. Much mahalo to those who donated to the refreshment table and assisted in the kitchen & clean up duties.

A heartfelt thank you to Pat Davison (daughter of Yoshiko Uechi), who for many years has donated red and white flags for our annual Bon Dance and donates all proceeds to Jikoen Hongwanji.

Much gratitude to Penny & Keith Teruya, who donated the “Make and Take” Mini Hanagasa Hat, Sugegasa Hat & Fish Lantern crafts in the social hall. Each year they provide all the material for each craft and all proceeds are donated to Jikoen in memory of their son, Jared Teruya who passed away in 2013 at the young age of 12.

Our sincere thanks for the many Hatsubon, Obon, and Obon Memorial Ribbon donations we received this year!

Each year, we are humbled by your generous donations of monetary gifts, food and supplies for our annual bon dance. Please let us know if we have inadvertently misprinted or noted your donations incorrectly. We want to make sure all of your donations are acknowledged correctly.

To the many “behind the scenes” volunteers, we could not survive without your help.

Bishop’s CornerBishop Eric Matsumoto

A Whole New World Opens Up Before Your Eyes

What is the Obon Season? The 5 R’s might help us to understand. Obon is a time of reverence, remembrance, reflection, realization and responding in gratitude. At Hongwanji, we gather to humbly pay reverence to All-Inclusive Wisdom and All-Embracing Compassion known as Amida Buddha or Namo Amida Butsu, The-Buddha’s-Name-That-Calls-Us (to entrust), as we remember and honor those who came before us especially our departed loved ones of family and friends.

As we gather in remembrance, it is a time to reflect and come to some realizations which can change our life. One of the great messages of Obon is interdependence. Hatsuzo Ohsuga wrote, “For man to live is not simply a matter of having blood times with our parents and siblings, we are also linked to the rest of the world. All living things born into this world, not just people, but animals and plants, coexist as part of a greater life that they share.”

His Eminence Gomonshu Emeritus Koshin Ohtani of Nishi Hongwanji encourages “Think more expansively of your connectedness to life.” “All things on earth, all things in the Universe, are in the fold of a great life-force linking us all together. In this world, there is no life that was ever lived in vain. There is no life that is meaningless. All life is linked together. All of us share in the light that Amida Buddha shines upon us-this is what Buddhism teaches.”

All life, all existence, regardless of whether they lived in the past, are living in the present or will be born in the future are illuminated and nurtured by the Buddha’s Light of Wisdom and Compassion. Just as when the light is turned on in a darkened room and we are able to see, likewise, with the Buddha’s Light shining upon us we begin to see and understand ourselves and the world in a different light. It is through this understanding that our life changes. This is what happened to Mogallana and his Mother. They found themselves living in a new awareness that life and living is made possible by innumerable others not limited to our fellow human beings. May we, too, come to realize the equality and preciousness of all

life including plant and animal life, actually all existence and move away from self-centeredness and selfishness to a world filled with respect and appreciation for and of one another.

Further, at Obon time, we express our joy as we come to realize that Amida Buddha embraces us just as we are, including our deceased loved ones, promising us the great Enlightenment equal to the Buddha’s own Enlightenment. Thus, we refer to Obon as “A Gathering of Joy” at Hongwanji as we rejoice in the fact that we are all (living and deceased) embraced by Great Compassion. The life of a Shin Buddhist is one of “Responding in Gratitude” in which I gratefully recite The-Buddha’s-Name-That-I-Call (in gratitude), Namo Amida Butsu and try to live a life in accord with the Buddha’s Teachings which aspires for more peace, harmony, and happiness in the world.

I end by expressing my ardent wish and hope that you will attend Sunday services to learn and experience more fully the Great Wisdom and Compassion of Amida Buddha. Namo Amida Butsu.

Volunteers Needed for Project DanaProject  Dana  is  a  Faith  In  Action  program that  provides  a  variety  of  services  to  the  frail, elderly, and disabled to ensure their well-being, independence,  and  dignity  in  an  environment of  their  choice.  Started  in  1989  at  Moiliili Hongwanji,  the  initiative  is now hosted by over thirty  churches  and  temples  across  Hawaii  and the U.S. mainland.

Trained  volunteers  provide  support,  guided by  the  principle  of  “Dana,”  which  combines selfless  giving  and  compassion  without  desire for  recognition  or  reward.  Project  Dana  also collaborates  with  over  150  private  and  public agencies across the state.

A  typical  Project  Dana  assignment  is  providing transportation  to  a  nearby  market  every  two weeks.  A  variation  of  this  is  “shopping  by  list” for  those  unable  to  shop  on  their  own.  Other assignments could entail housework or to provide transportation for a doctor’s appointment.

If you can spare an average of 2 hours once every two weeks and have access to a car, please call Sandra Toma, Project Dana coordinator for Jikoen Hongwanji Mission at 845-3422. Thank you!
