Explanation ofAbbreviations�

1ht New American State Papers-Naval Affairs is based upon four sources: the original American State Papers, published by Gales Be Seaton between 1882 and 1861; the serial volumes of the official documents of the U.S. Congress, printed continuously after 1817;, the Navy Department records preselVed in the National Archives; and printed collections of documents.

To assist readers and scholars, the original source for each docu­ment is listed in the Calendar ofDocuments 'according to the following abbreviations:

I. ASP-American State Papers (Washington, DC: Gales Be Seaton, 1832-61). All references are to the Naval Affairs (NA) or Military Affairs (MA). series and include both volume and page citations. Thu~ the reference ASP NA III 455 indicates Naval Affairs series, volume III, page 455.

II. Congressional Documents. Each document is identified by Con­gress, session, document number, and.the volume in the serial set in which it appears. Hence, ~D 5823:2 (267) means Senate Docu­ment number 53, 23d Congress, 2d session, serial volume 267. The abbreviations for the various congressional documents include:
