Religious Committee Activities

High Holidays 2010 Again we thank all of our Clergy for conducting very successful and enjoyable services. Conservative services that were conducted by Rabbi Gary Fink and Cantor Mike Kravitz who also was the Shofar blower. Reform services that were conducted for the first time by Rabbi Stephanie Bernstein and Cantor Susan Berkson accompanied on her cello by Lori Barnet. We now want to include thanks Naomi Guttman, our Shofar blower. Naomi grew up at B’nai Shalom of Olney, is a student in a local High School and plays an instrument in her school. She came through for us when we were in a desperate need of a Shofar blower: Thank you. Sukkot Our Sukkot services were very successful due to the leadership of Susan Weiss. She was in overall charge and together with her husband Jerry, helped set-up the Sukkah,

served as hostess and helped clean-up, among her other chores. Our thanks also go to Janet Lazar, Suzie Offit, Phyllis Rothstein, Naomi Kline, Jack and Helen Cubert, Laura Sussan and the children, teachers and parents from the Children’s Learning Center who helped to decorate the Sukkah. Other members of JRLW who deserve recognition for their contribution to our Sukkot services are: Jerry Miller and Egon Guttman who conducted our services, the clean-up crew consisting of Janet Lazar, Miriam Gilbert ,Jerry and Susan Weiss, and our Hostesses Sunday thru Tuesday:

Theda Rosenblum, Joan Lees, Dora Wistreich, Sue Rudo, Deborah Letow. Inge Guttman, Joyce Susswein. Sheila Chodorov, Judy Bravman.

Last, but not least, our thanks go to John Hayden and his staff for setting up and taking down our Sukkah. Other Activities Now that the 2010 High Holidays are over, we are busy planning for 2011. • We have prepared the schedule of services for 2011 and will publish it after we coordinate with E&R and the Interfaith Chapel to ensure that we have no scheduling conflicts. • A member of B’nai Shalom of Olney donated 600 brand new Machzorim to their Synagogue and we, in turn, became the beneficiaries of their “old” Machzorim. Thus next year we will be replacing the Silverman Machzor, published in 1939 with the more modern Machzor by Rabbi Harlow, first published by the Rabbinical Assembly in 1972. • Our Choir Director, Ed Laskin, works very hard throughout the year with his choir to ensure that our Friday Evening services are enlivened. We don’t have a specific opportunity to do so, but we want to use this forum to thank him for all his efforts.

Page 3: Jewish Residents of Leisure World

3   (Continued on Page 3) • One of our newest members, Elaine Shenberg, has approached Susan Weiss and volunteered to help with next years Sukkot program. We hope she inspires other new members to similarly volunteer. Torah Fumd It has become obvious to your committee that the Torahs we have are heavy and are difficult for members of JRLW to lift (Hagba) or to carry. Our hope is that in the not too distant future we can obtain a lighter (smaller?) Torah that our members can more easily handle. We do have a Torah Fund that contains a minimal amount in that account. We hope that we can re-energize our membership in the coming year to add to the Torah Fund as their venue for Tzedaka. Naturally, if one of our members would step-up and donate a new Torah that would be most welcome.

6  be in front of Clubhouse II no later than 5:30 pm. The bus will leave by 6:00 pm. If you have any questions call Theda Rosenblum at 301-598-9105 Phyllys Hutt: PLEASE PASS THE TOMATOES Time passes swiftly. Now it is November and another Thanksgiving Day looms on the near horizon. This was always my father's favorite national holiday. In his retirement someone suggested that he find a hobby. So find one he did, and each summer he would announce that there would be lots of tomatoes to grace the Thanksgiving table that year, due to his prowess at being a "farmer extraordinaire". Alas, that never happened. My parents moved across the street from us when we had our little house in Langley Park. When Daddy semi-retired, the hobby that he found was gardening. After all, he was there. The yard was there. Why not? As a pharmacist for many years he was familiar with many medicines, medicinal herbs, knew all their Latin names, etc. However, he didn't know a rose from a petunia. Suddenly, he was a gardener! He became a self-proclaimed expert, devouring every book, article, newspaper clipping available on the subject. He wanted House and Garden to consider it worthy enough for a centerfold photo. He purchased every type of "garden aid" that existed, from fertilizer to lime, which he bought in 50 pound sacks. Never determining the ratio of lime to soil, the "aids" were dumped by the bagful along the flower beds and tomato plants. He would tamp the soil down and sweep it until it was flat. Mom told him not to "noodge" the plants, that it was a yard, not a kitchen floor! He ignored her and said that neatness was a virtue. With all the plant food, twine, metal stakes, sprays and Miracle-Gro, he would surely get a great crop. Finally, the tomato plants, despite the constant torture, abuse and frothy white "suds" that appeared each time it rained, produced seven or eight puny tomatoes. The flowers? Don't even ask. We figured out that the approximate

expenditure for Daddy's hobby came to $7.32 each. Maybe he should have tried to grow pumpkins. They are sturdier. RECIPE CORNER - Unstuffed Cabbage

A new twist on an old favorite Shirley Greenberg 2 lb ground meat 1 ½ lb shredded cabbqge 1 cup chilli sauce ¾ cup apricot jam 1 cup water 1 small can tomato sauce Heat last four ingredients to blend. Make small meatballs from the ground meat. Starting with cabbage, layer meat and cabbage alternately. Pour sauce over all. Bake for 1 ½ hours 375 ° oven.

JRLW HOST FOR THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION

The Interfaith Committee will hold the annual Thanksgiving Celebration the evening of November 24th at 7:30 P.M. in the Interfaith Chapel. On a rotating basis with the four major religious groups on campus, this is JRLW’s year to host the service. Our own Rabbi Gary Fink will deliver the sermon. The service will include a number of Hebrew and English songs and prayers within the structure of an ecumenical program celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday. The choral group, consisting of members of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish organizations in Leisure World, will sing a variety of English and Hebrew songs giving thanks for the bounty we enjoy here in the United States. Portions of the service will be

recited by members of the sponsoring organizations. In keeping with the spirit of the holiday, attendees are invited to bring donations of food (cans, jars or boxes) that will be given to Manna to feed the homeless. In lieu of food, there will be an opportunity to donate cash that will be forwarded to The 2009 Hunger Relief Campaign, or you can write a check to the LW Interfaith Committee for the Homeless and Working Poor. All members, families and friends who are concerned about the welfare of Israel at this crucial time in their historical struggle and who feel the need to express their moral support for the Israeli People and who favor a strong, binding and continuing relationship of goodwill and brotherhood between America and Israel, are urged to attend the Rally to demonstrate to the world that America is a true and trusted ally who can be relied on as a faithful and loyal friend. You may recall that on 9/11/01 nearly 3000 Americans were murdered by 19 Arabs and while much of the Arab world celebrated and danced in the streets the Israeli People offered aid and sent their prayers and condolences to the American People. It is time for us, the American People, to rally in support of our trusted and true friend Israel. It's time to raise our voices now. For more information you may contact JWV Representatives: Danny Bass 301-438-8131 or Jerry Jacobs 301-438-3556      U.S.NAVAL ACADEMY TRIP OCT 22 WAS A COMPLETE SELL OUT. Once again, this popular event received overwhelming support of our members and friends. Participation with the Naval Cadets at the Sabbath Services and the Oneg Shabbat is truly a spiritual and patriotic experience. We are grateful for the support that this program has received.      Reminder: Our new Post Commander is Herbert Ostrof 301-598-3525. He is dedicated to the Veterans and their families and loyal to the ideals of the Jewish War Veterans. He should be admired for assuming this high office on short notice. Herb possesses the right mix of leadership and integrity to make an outstanding contribution during his tenure. He will do well.

CONSIDERATIONS IN STRUCTURING NEW

RELATIONSHIPS

BETH SHAPIRO, LCSW-C COMING OF AGE IN MARYLAND

PROGRAM JEWISH SOCIAL SERVICES AGENCY

Do you recall the scene in the movie “Ten Things I Hate About You” when the young lady must read her poem to the class about the guy she secretly adores? She begins with “I hate the way you talk to me, and the way you cut your hair,” but ultimately concludes, “I hate it that you're not around, and the fact that you didn't call. But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all.”

As the poem reflects, being in a new relationship is not easy – it can even confuse you with conflicting feelings. You need to give the other person an opportunity to learn who you are and what you want and need. As I speak to Leisure World residents attending the Coming of Age in Maryland events, I find many people have questions about pursuing new relationships, with the opposite sex in particular.

For older people with many life experiences, expectations around dating have changed dramatically. A serious relationship today does not necessarily mean there will be a formal union. Nor does it imply living in the same house or sharing finances. Activities like spending time with family members, celebrating holidays and even intimacy need to be carefully reviewed and discussed to meet the expectations of each member of a couple.

Other issues an older adult needs to think about when dating today may include the varying reasons people seek new relationships. In forming a new couple, are the reasons of each person compatible? Some may wish to find love and fulfillment in

caring for the needs of another or, conversely, in receiving care. Some may see being part of a couple as an easier way to socialize. In some cases, seniors wish to reduce feelings of loneliness and therefore may enter a relationship that brings companionship but not necessarily love. The social workers in JSSA’s Senior Services are highly trained and experienced professionals who can assist you in thinking through your relationships. They can help you carefully consider your options to meet your current and future needs. If you would like to discuss your relationship concerns in JSSA’s confidential and supportive environment, please feel free to call me directly at (301) 816-2665 or email me at [email protected]. You can also call JSSA’s Intake Department directly at (301) 816-2633 to schedule an appointment. Visit www.jssa.org to learn more about JSSA’s wide array of services and programs.

B'NAI B'RITH David Firestone Our next meeting is November 17 in Clubhouse II. Our guest is Matthew Celentano, Deputy Director of the Maryland Citizens' Health Initiative. His organization has exposed a drug company scheme to mislead churches and community groups, helped stop the conversion of the state's largest non-profit insurer, passed significant legislation to provide cheaper prescription drugs, and expand Medicaid and health care coverage to over 200,000 individuals, as well as the landmark Fair Share Health Care bill. Matt is a Baltimore native who graduated from the University of Vermont with honors. Matt will discuss his organization's work to provide good health care and less costly prescription drugs for all citizens of Maryland. (Continued on Page 14)

A Feat of Determination

JRLW is in for a treat on November 13th. Joan Engelman will celebrate her Bat Mitzvah.

Joan has studied very hard for the past year

to learn how to read Hebrew (aleph, bet, gimmel, ….) and then learned to read her portion of the Torah. We all know, reading the Torah is a feat in itself.

Joan was born in Philadelphia, moved to Bowie, MD, moved again to Florida and is now part of our community. Joan has 3 sons; Jay, Gary and Vic and one daughter, Donna. We’ll let Joan tell you about all of her grandchildren.

Come to the Conservative Services on Nov 13th and celebrate a wonderful experience for JRLW and perhaps others in our community would like to do the same.

EDITORIAL Bernice Cohen

It was Monday morning in this past October. As I went over in my mind the many small tasks I had to do that day, I felt a little overwhelmed. There was the Newsletter to work on. I needed to take some things to the dry cleaners and then there had to be a quick trip to K-mart to return something. I had a little sticky-note on the cabinet reminding me to call PEPCO about my bill. It was my husband’s Yahrzeit—is it possible that three years have passed since his death? The computer had decided to act up and give me a hard time. Then there was the JRLW Board Meeting that night. A trip to the grocery store was another thing on my list. A phone call came from one of my best friends; she has been suffering from a malady which has stumped the doctors. Now she was calling from Florida with more bad news about her condition. I was dragging around the condo; picking up papers, wiping a counter top and all the while fuming to myself about what had to be done that day. I automatically walked out on the balcony to open the blinds. I glanced out and WOW! Down on the street in front of my building, a tree had turned overnight from green to a bright orange. It was beautiful! What a heart-stopping reminder of God’s handiwork. I could not take my eyes off that tree. I knew that I would carry that image around with me for the rest of the day. I had to smile and my heart warmed.

Did seeing that sight and feeling the beauty make my day any easier? No. I wish I could say that it did, but it would not be true. I still had errands to run, phone calls to make, computer to deal with, editing to do for the Newsletter and a meeting that night. But the difference is that my heart felt a little lighter as the image of that orange-colored tree stayed with me throughout the day and evening. I had my own little moment of Thanksgiving for the beauty of our world. It has been a tradition in my family that when we gather together to celebrate Thanksgiving, we go around the table giving each person a chance to say one thing he/she is thankful for. This year I hope I remember the beautiful orange tree that changed my day and made my heart smile. I hope you and your family have a lovely Thanksgiving. And I hope we remember all the things, large and small, that we have to be thankful for.
