Parashat Korach tells the story of the ill-fated rebellion of Korach and his followers, who end up devoured by the earth as the earth splits to engulf them. But he portion also contains a mysterious, but beautiful, story of how God shows that the Priesthood is for Aaron and his descendants. God tells Moses to take twelve staffs,
one for each tribe, and to place them in the Tent of Meeting. Each tribe provides a staff with it's name inscribed upon it, and the next day, they all see that the staff of the tribe of Levi, the one with Aaron's name inscribed on its length, has blossomed overnight, producing the flowers and fruit of the almond tree. Through this miraculous growth God showed that He intended the Priesthood to run through Aaron and his descendants. It is a great piece of narrative because who else but God could bring blossoms and fruit from a lifeless piece of wood? In truth this piece of text is ripe (pun intended) for Rabbinic interpretation. The Rabbi's believed that the staff is the same one that Judah gave to Tamar as collateral when she pretended to be a prostitute. (Remember that the product of the union between Tamar and Judah was Perez, the ancestor of King David). The Rabbis alternatively said that Moses cut all twelve staffs from one large beam so that no one could complain that the test was rigged. Finally, it was asserted that every Israelite King held the staff until the time of the destruction of the Temple, at which time God hid it away until the day the Messiah comes. The above explanations are very nice; however, they miss one important point. By causing the staff to sprout leaves, flowers, and fruit and then having it placed in front of the Ark of the Covenant for all to see forever, effectively, God, metaphorically, just as He had done in Eden, planted a Tree of Life at the center of a garden. The underlying message is that there is something inherently holy about Gardens and the plants and trees that inhabit them. In truth, a garden anywhere makes a spot more beautiful, more

peaceful and more holy. Last week the JCC had the good fortune to have gardens planted around its western and northern sides. The site was so wondrous to behold that one could immediately get a sense of what Adam and Eve (and God) must have felt when they saw the Garden of Eden. A garden represents a small universe of wonder. Below is the service that we performed last Friday night, just before Kabbalat Shabbat services. Please review it and the next time you come to the JCC, stand quietly outside in front of the gardens and silently chant the prayers hereon, or chant your own prayers. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay A BRIEF SERVICE FOR OUR NEW GARDENS In the Book of Genesis, after God creates man and woman, we are told that God planted a Garden in Eden. In that Garden was every tree that was pleasing to the sight...With the Tree of Life at the middle of the Garden. We refer to our Torah as the "Etz Chayim", the Tree of Life. Just as we take sustenance from a tree, so our way of life learned through Torah sustains us in strength and beauty. By its very nature, a garden creates serenity and peace. Psalm 92 Tzadik katamar yifrach, ke-erez bal'vanon yisgeh. Shetulim b'veit adonai, B'chatzrot elohenu yafrichu. Od yenuvun besayvah, Deshaynim va-ra'ananim yihiyu, Lehagid ki yashar Adonai, Tzuri ve-lo avlatah bo. The righteous bloom like a date palm, they thrive like a cedar in Lebanon; Planted in the house of the Lord, they flourish in the courts of God. Blessings "Baruch ata Adonai Eloheynu Melech ha'olam oseh ma'aseh b'reisheet." Blessed are you G-d Sovereign of the Universe who continuously blesses creation. THE WEEK THAT WAS...
THURSDAY EVENING a group of 20 residents gathered at Mirage in Barnegat for our first "Ask the Rabbi" get-together. The questions were varied and included queries about burial customs and the meaning of "faith". Many thanks to Maxine & David Freedman for initiating Rabbi Jay's visit to their community and to Joann Ramer and Odet Cohen for hosting the gathering.
If you would like to host an "Ask the Rabbi" get-together in your neighborhood, please contact Rabbi Jay at RABBI
FRIDAY NIGHT at the JCC was very special with a large crowd at services to honor CLIFF FARIN for all he does for the Center throughout the year. Yasher Koah Cliff.
We were also thrilled to have the landscaping completed just in time for Shabbat, allowing us to have brief service commemorating our new gardens. You cannot pass 24th Street without enjoying the beautiful plantings now part of our JCC. Many many thanks to Howard Fruchterman for overseeing the design and planting of the garden. It is a thing of beauty.

food for the Monmouth & Ocean County Food Bank so they got two cartons and put signs on them and placed one in the foyer and one in the Social Hall of the JCC. But they wanted to do much more so the family volunteered to go once a week to the warehouse in Neptune, NJ to stock shelves and pack boxes.
