Jesus Walks to Golgotha Texts:

Matthew 27:32-34,

32. And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. 33. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, 34. They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink.

Mark 15:20-23,

20. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. 21. And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. 22. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. 23. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.

Luke 23:26-32,

26. And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. 27. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts which never gave suck.

30. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? 32. And there were also two other, malefactors led with him to be put to death.

John 19:17,

17. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

Introduction:

I. The events of this lesson took place in Jerusalem in A.D. 30 and covered three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

A. It was at the season of Passover that these events transpired.

1. It was spring of the year.

II. The death, burial and resurrection of Christ the Lord are the most important events of all history!

III. Divisions of these events are:

A. The Crucifixion of Jesus.

1. Matthew 27:32-44, And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull, They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. And sitting down

they watched him there; And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left. And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth.

2. Luke 23:26-43; And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus. And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry? And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death. And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his

raiment, and cast lots. And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar, And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself. And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss. And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

3. John 19:16-27, Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away. And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate answered, What I have written I have written. Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the

top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

4. Mark 15:21-32, And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull. And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not. And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS. And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors. And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, Save thyself, and come down from the cross. Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save. Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see

and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.

B. The Death of Jesus.

1. Matthew 27:45-56, Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedees children.

2. Luke 23:44-49, And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up

the ghost. Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man. And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned. And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

3. John 19:28-30, After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

4. Mark 15:33-41, And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and

ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

C. The Burial of Jesus.

1. Matthew 27:57-61, When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple: He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

2. Luke 23:50-56, And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just: (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God. This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid. And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on. And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

3. John 19:38-42, And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus. And there came

also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight. Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury. Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid. There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

4. Mark 15:42-47, And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

D. The Resurrection of Jesus.

1. Matthew 28:1-10, In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did

shake, and became as dead men. And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

2. Luke 24:1-12, Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again. And they remembered his words, And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles. And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them

not. Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

3. John 20:1-10, The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the LORD out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.

4. Mark 16:1-8, And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man

sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

IV. Jesus calms the sea of our troubles which surrounds us and demonstrated here that even death and the fear that surrounds it can be conquered.

A. 1 Corinthians 15:51-55, Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die/sleep but we will all be changed in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?”

V. This scripture text records the events of the last hours of Jesus’ life on earth and certain events which occurred immediately following his death.

VI. With which of the characters in this scripture do you relate, identify?

A. Those who forced Jesus to carry his cross, back sore from the beating, as far as he was able.

B. Simon who was forced to bear the cross for Jesus.

I. This study begins with Jesus’, having been tried by a “kangaroo court” and sentenced to death, carrying the cross on which he would be crucified along the Via Dolorosa toward Calvary.

A. Executions inside the city were forbidden.

1. Numbers 15:35, then the Lord said to Moses, “The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp.”

2. 1 Kings 21:13, Then two scoundrels came and sat opposite him and brought charges against Naboth before the people, saying, “Naboth has cursed both God and the king.” So they took him outside the city and stoned him to death.

3. Acts 7:58, ... dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul.

4. Hebrews 13:12, And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.

B. Jesus fell beneath the weight of the cross probably because of the scourging and long night of abuse.

II. Simon was compelled to bear the cross of Jesus.

A. Simon did not volunteer for this job. He was forced to carry the cross.

B. May it never be said of us that we were compelled to serve Jesus.

C. We are to serve Jesus gladly and of our free will.

D. Simon was from Cyrene, a city on the north coast of Africa in what today is Libya.

E. Cyrene was founded by Dorian Greeks about 630 B.C.

F. Cyrene was populated by a large number of Jews some of whom were present at both this Passover and Pentecost.

Matthew 27:33, 34, They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it.

I. Jesus arrived at Golgatha, the place of a skull, the site of the crucifixion.

II. The wine and gall, a bitter poisonous herb, was a potion designed to deaden the sensibilities of condemned men and to alleviate some of their suffering.

A. Christ tasted the potion to fulfill prophecy.

B. Psalm 69:21, They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.

III. Jesus bore on the cross the full pain of the sins of the world.

IV. Myrrh was given Jesus at his birth and again offered him at his death.

V. Sour wine (vinegar) and myrrh made a stupefying drink effective in deadening pain.

VI. This was an act of kindness.

A. The Talmud, a collection of books and commentary compiled by Jewish Rabbis, spoke of an association of women in Jerusalem who sought to alleviate the suffering of condemned criminals in this way.

VII. Jesus refused to drink the wine/vinegar and gall in order to fully suffer the effects/penalty for our sins.

crucify him. They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

I. The Roman soldiers saw that Christ’s strength was failing and that he could not carry the cross any farther.

II. The soldiers compelled (forced) a passerby to bear the cross for Jesus.

III. This obscure Simon who is mentioned no where else in scripture was rocketed into a place of honor by chance and/or by being in the right place at the right time!

A. He may have been a follower of Jesus.

IV. The cross was approximately 15 feet by 8 feet, a heavy difficult object to carry.

A. Simon must have been physically strong!

V. Why was Simon in the crowd at that time?

A. Simon, Alexander and Rufus were evidently well known to Mark and were likely disciples at the time Mark wrote this book.

VI. Could the Rufus of Romans 16:13 have been the Rufus of this verse?

A. Romans 16:13, Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; and greet his mother - a mother to me also.

Mark 15:22, Then they brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull).

I. Golgotha, the place of a skull, was the site of the crucifixion of Jesus.

A. The hill on which Jesus was crucified was evidently shaped like a skull.

II. The crucifixion site is translated from Latin as Calvary (Luke 23:33) which also means, “The place of a skull.”

A. Luke 23:33, And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

Mark 15:23, And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh; but he did not take it.

I. Jesus refused the wine mingled with myrrh which was offered to him to dull the pain of crucifixion.

II. Proverbs 31:6, 7, Give strong drink to one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress; let them drink and forget their poverty, and remember their misery no more.

III. Jesus bore on the cross the full pain of the sins of the world.

IV. Myrrh was given Jesus at his birth and was offered him at his death.

V. Sour wine (vinegar) and myrrh was a stupefying drink effective in deadening pain.

VI. This was an act of kindness.

A. The Talmud, a collection of books and commentary compiled by Jewish Rabbis, spoke of an association of women in Jerusalem who sought to alleviate the suffering of condemned criminals in this way.

Simon of Cyrene

Luke 23:26, As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.

I. As Jesus was being led away to be crucified he fell under the weight of the cross.

A. Simon of Cyrene, Tripoli, a principal city of North Africa located between Carthage and Egypt, was pressed into service to bear the cross of Jesus.

B. Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus. Rufus and his mother were faithful members of the church in Rome.

1. Romans 16:13, Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.

2. Mark 15:21, A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

C. Cyrenians were present at Passover and at Pentecost.

Jesus’ Prophecy to the Daughters of Jerusalem

Luke 23:27, 28, A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.

I. As Jesus made his way to Golgotha a great multitude of the people and women followed him and bewailed and lamented his coming suffering and death.

II. Jesus told these women who followed not to weep for him but to weep for themselves and their children.

A. “Daughters of Jerusalem” refers to female residents of the city of Jerusalem.

B. Jesus was more concerned about the suffering that awaited Jerusalem because of its sins than he was in the suffering which was coming upon him.

1. Jerusalem was destroyed in A.D. 70.

2. The souls of Jerusalem sinners were lost!

Luke 23:29-31, For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then “‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!’” For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

I. This was because days were coming when those in Jerusalem would say:

A. Blessed are the barren, those with no children, the wombs that never gave birth and breasts that never nursed.

B. Things would be so bad that people of Jerusalem would pray that the mountains would fall on them and that the hills would cover them.

C. This was a strange statement to Jewish women who regarded childbirth as the greatest of blessings.

D. Jesus was saying, “If I, totally innocent, am treated this way, what will happen to the guilty?” That suffering will be immeasurable!

E. The expression, “the green tree,” refers to the innocent Savior while “the dry tree” refers to the guilty Jewish leaders and to peaceful times and times of war.

F. Jesus pronounced doom on Jerusalem upon his entering it and now upon his leaving it.

1. Luke 19:41, As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it ...

2. Luke 23:29-31, For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts which never gave suck. Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

3. The fires of suffering consuming Jesus (the green tree) were nothing when compared with the fires of destruction which would devour Jerusalem (the dead tree).

Luke 19:32, Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.

I. Two robbers (malefactors) were led with Jesus to be executed.

A. This was evidently Pilate’s doing and was probably designed as an insult to the Jews who would not look with favor on regular executions so near the Passover Feast.

B. Isaiah 53:9, 12, He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence nor was any deceit in his mouth. Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

C. God had foretold these events and Pilate at best was only used as God’s instrument in carrying them out.
