This studio investigated pre-industrial methods of con-struction in Cordoba, Argentina, a city located at an identical and opposite latitude as Austin, TX. The focus was on revaluating the possibilites and limitations of low-tech brick construction, a representative of an essential, broadly distributed, building material. At the block scale, these units aggregate to cre-ate varied buildings which together form block typolo-gies that reinvigorate and connect the area to the rest of the city. In our scheme, two block typogolies developed which created different types of communal spaces with distinct purposes of program, movement, and activity.| collaboration with Jerry Suarez and Juan Verdeguer |

This precedent study focused the facade of
Aoki Jun’s White Chapel in Osaka Japan, which
challenges the traditional characteristics of a
building envelope. An in-depth look was taken
into the technical aspects of the construction
and presented through high-quality drawings
showing assembly, materials, and drawing stan-
dards. The study culminated with the construc-
tion of a 1/2” scaled section model.

Austin, TX is considered a city inside of a park.
Its urban inhabitants value the proximity to mu-
litiple nature trails, parks, and to central Town
Lake. Situated along an important edge be-
tween the built and natural environment, my
design for a competition and leisure swim cen-
ter aimed to address and merge both of these
realms. A severely sloped and narrow site
prompted me to develop a concept of a fold-
ing plane which accomodates both conditioned
(city) and open air (park) activites. The under-
side of the plane which meets the street is an
extension of adjacent downtown and houses a
conditioned competition pool. On the park side,
the plane melds into a grand plaza and outdoor
pool allowing for an open communal space that
can be shared by the city.

In an exploration of sustainable re-use and pres-ervation, I was faced with the task of converting a mid-century modern utility plant at St. Ewards University in Austin into a lively student center. My concept for the adaptation and new addition focused on preserving the original desgin intent behind the trabeated structure and mimicking it in a respectful and rational way. Externally, my design maintained much of the existing structure and shell and took advantage of the dramatic el-evation change that occurs between the front and rear of the site. The resulting design maintains and unassuming front towards the university and an open public face towards an existing water-shed pond at the rear of the site. On the interior, a series of descending platforms create a simul-taneous feeling of growing openess in a series of intimate spaces.

The design sequence of an urban studio
culminated with the aggregation of a typi-

Aggregating these units, which contained DIBOHJOH nPPS IFJHIUT SFTVMUFE JO B EZ-

provided a self-shading facade in which an

easily accessed. The reycling facilities create a neighborhood icon and a space for special events, local gatherings, and everyday life.
RECYCLED LANDSCAPE An urban landscape drapes over the waste facilities, creating a park-like space for play and stay for the neighborhood. The surface
is shaped by the various height and size requirements of the different elements.
The outdoor space shaped by the pavillions frames an active urban area. The recycling

Challenges included creating an environmentally responsive low-tech struc-ture that protected users from heat gain, wind, and condensation, all within a modest budget of 5 million kroner (800k USD). Dur-ing development I researched and tested standard long span structures, and worked closely with our structural engineer to deter-mine rough sizing dimensions. I also test-ed and modeled options for the secondary structure and cladding, as well as detailed the perimeter gate frames and rollers. Initially proposed as an idea for the recycling plaza, an auxetic contraption was re-imag-ined as a lamp whose dynamic movement could be used as a means of actively control-ling light. The task of developing this idea into something that could potentially be mar-keted became an independent project that I would work on during my down time at the of-mDF*NFUIPEJDBMMZUFTUFENBOZWBSJBCMFTPGthe lamp including the materials, light source, lamp type (hanging, table, or wall-mounted), and dimensions. I researched and devel-oped a joint system that could be subtle and sleek and created numerous working pro-toypes. These included one with a working light function in which internal magnets con-trolled the electical circuit.
