New life from apparent barrenness. Life out of death. Finding life by losing it. The readings you heard in church this weekend seem to present a contradictory message, but they actually present a truth: The life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus gives meaning to life, including its losses, hardships, and difficulties. A Resurrection faith takes up the cross and carries it to eternal life. Faith does not avoid daily existence; faith transforms it. And the evidence of faith is hope and service to others. ~Prepare the Word

Stewardship reflection ~ July 2nd “…whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of

me.” - MATTHEW 10:38 Pope Benedict XVI said, “The world offers you

comfort. But you were not made for comfort, you were made for greatness”. “Comfort” puts me first. “Picking up your cross and following Jesus” puts God and others first. Why settle for comfort when

you can achieve greatness! Pick up your cross, ask Jesus for guidance on using your gifts and live the

life God intended for you!

The Adoration Chapel of St. George needs more committed adorers.

THE INNER WORD What’s in your heart?

The woman of Shunem showed hospitality to the holy man, the prophet Elisha. How do you show hospitality in your life and ministry? Saint Paul speaks of how Bap-tism joins us to Christ’s death as well as his Resurrection. Where have you had to “die” in order to receive new life? “Whoever loves father or mother . . . son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” When have you put other things ahead of Christ? Do you think it’s true that putting your relationship with God first will strengthen and improve the quality of all your other relationships? ~Prepare the Word

HOLY BAPTISM

We Welcome the Newly Baptized to Our Parish Family

Leonidas Henry Scarborough Son of Scott & Janet

Grandson of Roseann

blessings on their families as they continue to grow in their faith.

Have a safe & blessed 4th

of July & please

join us for 9:00 am Mass.

Happy Independence Day!

13TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Parishioners,

We will have one Mass on Tuesday, July 4th, as we observe Independence Day. The Mass will be at St. George at 9AM. Let us join together in giving thanks to God for the freedom and independence we enjoy in our country which continues to draw so many people across the world to our land. Our freedom has been won and maintained at great personal sacrifice. And so we remember those who defend and protect the way of life we have inherited and should never take for granted.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Mrs. Kay Teahan, the mother of Robin Lukasek, who died quietly in her sleep on June 22, and for the consolation of her family. Robin is the Office Manager at St. Dominic Savio and Office Manager for St. George.

Monica Johnson, coordinator of the St. George PSR program wants to invite anyone and everyone who is interested to come together in the Fatima Garden at St. George on Mondays at 7:30p and Thursdays at 7p to pray the rosary for the needs of St. George parish and St. Dominic Savio parish, but especially for the successful discernment of the Vision Team.

Monica is correct in her premise that a family that prays together stays together and we cannot discover God’s will for us unless we open ourselves up to Him in prayer. So, I heartily endorse her invitation to come together, weather permitting, for the next three months (July, August and Sep-tember) for the guidance of the Holy Spirit who never fails us.

“Listen, there are two things the Devil is deathly afraid of: fervent Communions and frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament.

Do you want Our Lord to grant you many graces? Visit Him often. Do you want Him to grant you only a few? Visit Him only seldom. Do you want the Devil to attack you? Rarely visit the Blessed Sacrament. Do you want the Devil to flee from you? Visit Jesus often. Do you want to overcome the Devil? Take refuge at Jesus’ feet. Do you want to be overcome by the Devil? Give up visiting Jesus.

Visiting the Blessed Sacrament is essential, my dear children, if you want to overcome the Devil. Therefore, make frequent visits to Jesus. If you do that, the Devil will never prevail against you.” - St. John Bosco, Biographical Memoirs.

I want to congratulate the parishioners of St. George for your support of the Annual Catholic Appeal. As in years past, you have exceeded the goal set by the Archdiocese by several thousand dollars. Your sacrificial gifts touch the lives of thousands of people in desperation and gives them Hope.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, pray for us

EXPLORING THE WORD I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE

Loyalty is a quality we value highly. We want our friends to be loyal. We expect our families to be. We hope for some modicum of reliability from bosses or employees. In fact, every meaningful relationship involves loyalty to be viable. We pledge allegiance to the flag, acknowledging our citizenship. We support our parish financially as a sign that we’re members who value what happens here. We “like” certain brands, books, groups on our Facebook page as our personal testimony of their worth. We cheer for our team, follow our favorite band, wear the t-shirt of the cause we care about. This week we celebrate Independence Day, a festival of flag-waving and fireworks through which we declare our pride in the nation that provides us so many liberties. We who “belong” as U.S. citizens are deeply grateful that we do. We know that many around the world would be just as eager to belong to this story because of all the freedoms and opportunities it provides. How our nation grows that belonging sensibly, safely, and justly remains a problem to be solved and worth pondering on this Independence Day. Pledging allegiance and choosing loyalties is also the theme across the passages for this Sunday. A woman of influence and means informs her husband that she’d like to make an investment in a certain Hebrew prophet. As a citizen of Shunem, this is an irregular alliance. The husband’s consent is not recorded, but seems beside the point. The woman has made up her mind to remodel the house to make room for a seer she hopes to have as a frequent guest. In another century, Saint Paul assures us that our Baptism unites us not only with Christ-life but also with Christ-death. Here’s an allegiance we might not knowingly be pledging. Loyalty to Christ provides astounding benefits, including resurrection from the dead and newness of life. But we get there by way of surrender, un-spelled-out suffering, and death to self-will. You have been warned. Do we need more persuading? Jesus tells his disciples plainly: No love can be higher than your love for me. Not even family love—a teaching that upsets most of us terribly, since we really do love our families and hold this bond as quite sacred. Even dearer: We’re told we can’t hold our own lives as more precious than the loyalty we owe to Jesus. How can such loyalty be expected of us? Truly, we’d much rather build an addition on the house for a prophet than to embrace this unstinting surrender to Jesus! Once surrendered, however, we find all other allegiances easily rearranged. Jesus is Lord. For the Christian, every other flag flies lower.

Seeking Area Families to Host International Students

For the last two years, Ed McElroy of KEM Educational Group has been hosting Chinese high school students at St. John Vianney High School. Next year, there will be more than a dozen Chinese students at Vianney. Ed is currently leasing the convent at St. George to house these Vianney students. Next year, there will also be several Chinese students attending Rosati-Kain High School. Ed is looking for several area families to host one or more of these students. One Vianney student has also expressed a desire to live with an American family. Host responsibilities will include preparing breakfast and dinner for the students and driving the students to and from their school. If we can find host families that live close to St. George, the possibility exists that the students may want to eat Chinese dinners at the St. George convent. A perfect situation would be where the local family has a spare bedroom where the student can stay. Ed and his wife will still act as the liaison between the school and each student’s family. Host families will receive a monthly amount for providing home stay services. If you would like any information about this opportunity, please feel free to contact Ed at (858) 869-5065.
