Dear Sisters and Brothers:

In a couple days, unbelievably, I will have completed 10 years here with you at Saint Julie’s! It’s been my privilege to have lead this incredibly dynamic and spiritual flock and to have shared in so many significant moments in the life of the parish as well as in your own family lives. I first of all thank our “Good God”, as Saint Julie herself would say, but would also like to express my gratitude to all of you for your goodness, generosity, patience and unconditional love! I have been beyond blessed but I also ask your forgiveness if I have in anyway fallen short in my role as pastor to you!

As you know, I will be stepping down as pastor on September 1st. Father Ian Hagan will be arriving this coming week on the first of July to begin the process of getting to know Saint Julie’s from the inside out! After a month’s vacation in August, he’ll return to lead our parish in this new chapter of his life and the life of our parish community! I know you will welcome him with all the love and support I received a decade ago!

I also want to thank Daryl Hitt for his commitment to the youth of the parish as both youth minister and Confirmation coordinator these past nine years! He has planted seeds of faith in hundreds of our young people that will continue to flourish and bear fruit in the years to come! Godspeed, Daryl!

Our parish staff has been family and I have been so blessed to work shoulder to shoulder with women and men of great faith! A special thanks to all our staff mem-bers, deacons, ministry and organization heads for your dedication to and love of God and God’s people!

We are still weighed down by this coronavirus and the civil unrest we bear witness to each day! If nothing else, we are reminded that there is still much work for us to do together to bring forth the Kingdom of God as revealed to us by Jesus! Let’s all endeavor to continue God’s work and to faithfully give of ourselves as long as God gives us the strength to do so!

Much love to each of you!

Father Paul

Reading 1Zec 9:9–10Thus says the LORD:Rejoice heartily, O daughter Zion, shout for joy, O daughter Jerusalem!See, your king shall come to you;a just savior is he, meek, and riding on an ass,on a colt, the foal of an ass.He shall banish the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem;the warrior’s bow shall be banished, and he shall proclaim peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea,and from the River to the ends of the earth.

Responsorial PsalmPs 145:1–2, 8–9, 10–11, 13–14

Reading 2Rom 8:9, 11–13Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bod-

ies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

GospelMt 11:25–30At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my bur-den light.”

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Many years ago, there was a very popular Christian poster that did nothing but list names for God from the scriptures. While it included powerful names like “Lion of Judah” and “Wonderful Counselor,” as a whole it was a sharp contrast to the simple and beautiful images present in our scriptures today. The prophet Zechariah prefigures the Christ coming in meekly and mildly on an ass—the vision we might have of Palm Sunday. In Romans Saint Paul reveals to us our truer selves, calling us to embrace the Spirit of Christ, put aside our fleshly beings, and live more fully in Christ. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus bypasses the learned, and God reveals things to the childlike. We are presented with a simple, straightforward approach to God, and to finding God.

OUR COMPLICATED LIVESWe live in an age and a society that has never been more educated or had a higher standard of living, yet never have we carried as much debt. Many are living beyond their means. We have so many resources and time-saving devices at our hands, yet our lives are more complex than ever. While many people may not engage in extreme manual labor we rarely escape our jobs. Many are connected through phones and constantly receive calls, texts, and emails. Others spend hours in traffic on their daily commutes or pack on the frequent flyer miles. We spend hours binge-watching our favorite shows. Many children are accustomed to being in front of a screen all the time and no longer know how to play creatively. The statistics for those who continue to leave the Church and all forms of organized religion also continue to rise. While there is no such thing as a “good old days” to return to, there was something to be said for sleeping soundly after putting in a good day’s work, and for a family gathering around the table for a shared meal. For many, this model for eucharist rarely exists. Jesus knows and feels our pains, and calls out, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”

IT’S NOT ROCKET SCIENCESo how do we declutter? Downsize? Devote ourselves again to Christ and live out our gospel calling? Sign up for a liturgical ministry, or volunteer to help with a religion program. Join a small faith group. Volunteer at a food pantry or Habitat for Humanity. Become involved as an individual, or a family. Meanwhile, back at the house, make a commitment to go through one drawer a day, and take things to your local St. Vinnie’s or secondhand store. Remember meal and bedtime prayers. Find a minute to read the daily scriptures. Take many baby steps. It’s not rocket science. It is a continual commitment to bring ourselves as we are, and to respond to Jesus’ call to “Come.”

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEAThis week, on the Fourth of July, wecelebrate the birth of our country. Whena baby is born it cannot take care ofitself. It must be cared for and loved byits family and community. The samething is true of a country.

Our country was founded on wonderfulideals. The Declaration of Independenceproclaims that all people are equal andshould be treated with dignity andrespect. It also states that all people areentitled to certain rights, for example, the right to live a good and safe life, enjoy freedom, and be able to pursuewhat brings them happiness andfulfillment. These goals are hard toachieve. They require that every personwork hard to make them a reality foreveryone.

These goals need one more thing-thegrace and care of God. It is important thateveryone who believes in God ask God'sblessings on our country so that it cancontinue to grow and be a light to othernations. Katherine Lee Bates, who wrotethe words to the song "America theBeautiful," believed this and included it inthe lyrics. The song asks God to bless ourcountry and unite all of its citizens as onepeople, from the Atlantic to the Pacific,"from sea to shining sea."

As you and your family celebrate this day, sing "America the Beautiful" together. Inthe spirit of that song, make a promise topray for God's continued blessings, and towork to create a brotherhood andsisterhood of citizens throughout theentire country.

Prayer for Independence Day

God, source of all freedom, this day is bright with the memory

of those who declared that life and libertyare your gift to every human being.

Help us to continue a good work begun long ago. Make our vision clear and our will strong:

that only in human solidarity will we find liberty, and justice only in the honor that belongs

to every life on earth.Turn our hearts toward the family of nations:

to understand the ways of others,to offer friendship,

and to find safety only in the common good of all.We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. Amen.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCESSunday: Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary TimeMonday: St. Maria GorettiThursday: St. Augustine Zhao Rong andCompanionsSaturday: St. Benedict

—The only known photograph of Maria Goretti, dated to early 1902

SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902) July 6Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Gore-tti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Ma-ria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dream-ing that a radiant Maria had offered him four-teen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. How can I refuse?” Next morning, mother and murderer walked arm in arm to church and knelt side by side for Communion.

BECOMING A SAINTHow does someone become a saint?A person doesn’t have to be perfect to become a saint. In fact, saints are people who some-times fail at doing what God wants, but they keep trying. A person need not be famous or rich or important to become a saint. What all saints have in common is that they love God, try to follow Jesus, and repent for the times when they don’t succeed.

Many people who have died are saints, but some are named saints by the Church so that we might look to them as examples for our own lives. The Church designates a saint in three steps. First the person is named Vener-able, then Blessed, and finally canonized as a saint.

Kateri Tekakwitha is one of these saints. Her name means “She who bumps into things,” because she was partially blinded by smallpox as a child.

Kateri was a Native American woman born in 1656 in a Mohawk village in upstate New York. She became a Catholic at age nineteen and lived a good life devoted to teaching prayers to children and helping the elderly and those who were sick.

Sometime after her death officials in the Church researched all the good things she did and thought she was worthy to be a candidate for sainthood. Pope Pius XII gave her the title Venerable, which means “worthy of respect,” in 1943.

To be declared Blessed requires that two miracles, attributed to the saint’s intercession before God, be credited to her name. Kateri was named Blessed by Pope John Paul II in 1980.

Kateri Tekakwitha was canonized, meaning she has been “raised to the full honors of the altar,” by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.

She is the first Native American saint. Her feast day is July 14.

Only known portrait from life of Catherine Tekawitha, c. 1690, by Father Chauchetière

Read about the life of Kateri in the library or online and then take an online tour of her shrine at www.katerishrine.com.

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is often pictured holding a simple cross made of two sticks tied together. If you do not have a cross in your bedroom you might make one like hers.

DID YOU KNOW? Did you know? July 4-5 || Tips for keeping calm and parenting during stressful times

We are living in unprecedented times, and many parents are stretched to capacity.

The added stress of pandemic living can make it hard to parent calmly and effectively when children are acting out, but it’s important to remember that children are also going through a huge period of change right now.

Instead of reacting in anger, try these ideas to keep your cool. Talk to a friend – many people are suffering from a lack of physical community, so reach out by phone or text.

Pray together as a family, asking for patience, cheerfulness, and whatever other virtues you need to get you through the day.

Set an example of forgiveness with your children — ask for it when you need it and grant it when they do.

For more tips, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “Say it on repeat: I am going to keep my calm!” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/

Covid-19: A Prayer of Solidarity

For all who have contracted coronavirus, We pray for care and healing.

For those who are particularly vulnerable, We pray for safety and protection.

For all who experience fear or anxiety, We pray for peace of mind and spirit.

For affected families who are facing difficult decisions between food on the table or public safety, We pray for policies that recognize their plight.

For those who do not have adequate health insurance, We pray that no family will face financial burdens alone.

For those who are afraid to access care due to immigration status, We pray for recognition of the God-given dignity of all.

For our brothers and sisters around the world, We pray for shared solidarity.

For public officials and decisionmakers, We pray for wisdom and guidance.

Father, during this time may your Church be a sign of hope, comfort and love to all. Grant peace. Grant comfort. Grant healing. Be with us, Lord.

Amen.
