With its stout, furry body, the Mexican red-kneed tarantula might seem more mammal-like than spiderlike. The female can live up to 30 years, which is unusual for an invertebrate, but the life span of the male is only up to six years. Brachy-pelma smithi is one of a group of spiders that gets the nick-

name of bird-eater because of size, and although most of their diet consists of fellow arthropods, they can and do take

down small mammals and reptiles when the opportunity arises. In its native Mexico this species lives in burrows in earth banks, where it is safe to molt and lay eggs and from which it ambushes its prey. Habitat destruction is now a threat, and, because the species makes a popular pet, it is

routinely bred in captivity.

Artist Statement

Art is what people use to express themselves as a person and their interests. It helps them be in control of their mind; it is something that is never wrong or incorrect. Art is a depiction of an artist’s mind. I have always had an interest in art. I love to paint and let the brush flow through the page. Art let’s me create anything I want and portray my interests. My personal style in my work is drawing in illustrator and making vector designs that

stand out. My strong suit is to draw realistic things with pencil, charcoal, colored pencils, etc. Because of this, I am good with the pen and brush tool in my designs. I enjoy painting so this helps with the use of colors in my designs. When viewing my art, I would like people to be inspired to want to see more. I would like them to have an appreciation of the creativity behind it. I want my art in homes for many to admire and share.
