TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:I am very interested in acquiring an entry level architectural design position at your firm. Having completed extensive research on your work provided by your website, I feel confident that working for your firm would be a fantastic opportunity as I begin my career in architecture. I am particularly interested in the range and depth of your portfolio, as I am interested in the possibility of evolving and expanding as I grow as a designer. Using my education and experience, I know I would be a valuable asset to your firm.
I am a recent graduate of the Bachelors of Architecture program at the Pennsylvania StateUniversity. Our design projects throughout the years have ranged in terms of scale and program, allowing for a great amount of growth throughout my education. Throughout those projects, I have excelled in various computer programs, my most proficient being Revit, AutoCad, the Adobe Creative Suite, and Rhino, as well as intricate model making skills. During my recently completed final year, I worked on developing my own individual thesis project, which played off of many of my core interests as a student of architecture. I had chosen to focus on how to implement adaptive reuse to create socio-economic stimulation within the City of Detroit. Ultimately, worked from the macro of urban/community development schemes down to the micro of detailing/repurposing reclaimed materials and vacant buildings.
Aside from my design interests, education, and qualifications, I am a hard, dedicated worker. I always expend substantial thought behind my design decisions, and am always extremely professional in my execution and presentation of those designs. I appreciate your time and consideration, and would also appreciate the opportunity for an interview. I can attempt to make myself available at any time that cooperates best with your schedule, or alternative arrangements such as Skype or phone interviews can be arranged to meet any of your needs.Sincerely,
Jessica Donoghue
Thank You for Your Time & Consideration01

Just JessWHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ME Jessica Donoghue
JESSICA DONOGHUE AGE: 23. HOMETOWN: Shamong, NJ. HELLO: On every page youre going to see my name. Each time you see it, it will read: Jessica Donoghue. If you ever call, or write back, you can just call me Jess. ARCHITECTURAL INTERESTS: Adaptive reuse is a particular interest of mine, as a sustainable practice that I believe will be imperative in the future of architecture. Other elements of architecture that I enjoy include the play and complementation of materiality and textures, phenomenal space, engaging with nature, engaging with the surrounding fabric [in whatever form it may take], and the practicality or flexibility of spaces. Nonetheless, I am open and eager to explore any direction practicing within the field of architecture may lead. OTHER INTERESTS & INFORMATION: To ensure happiness, I can rely on a good book, an outdoor pursuit, spending time with family and friends, travel, or a stimulating work environment. I am easy going personally and driven professionally, a combination that I think would mesh well within any office culture.

DESIGN BUILD EXPERIENCE Jessica Donoghue
A group studio effort to design and build a community garden shed. The project included meeting with community members to define their wishes for their new garden shed, and reusing the reclaimed materials from their former, lack luster shed. We wanted to make the shed more accessible than their
original shed, which opened on the narrow side into a long, dark shed, by having sliding barn doors on the wide side. We also wanted make the shed slightly more narrow, to allow for an overhand, and
an extended porch that provides a place to grill and relax within the connecting back patio area. The project was completed in the spring of 2010, and is still in use and beloved by the community.

PROJECT: BOATHOUSE Jessica Donoghue
PROJECT DURATION: 4 WEEKSDESIGN CONCEPT: By gently peeling up the ground plane in the form of an extensive green roof and mimicking the sloping site, the boathouse is able to give back usable river-front space, where space was taken to accomodate the program. The chosen materials of rough, natural looking wood and copper paneling that has a patina finish compliment the beautiful, natural site within a state park on a river. The boathouse has five main programs: a seperated lockerroom, dock launching spaces with an extended pier, the boat storage room, a lounge space above for the crew teams, and a usable green roof that acts as a viewing platform for the crew events and races.

Various exhibits, cooperative work spaces, community func-tions, and educational hubs will be provided to promote the spread of knowledge and awareness of sustainable living techniques. Creating better relations, interactive experiences, and awareness betweens ourselves, our peers, and our shared world is the key to sustainability. The building itself represents the diversity of the site, the eroding and accretion at water and lands edge, and how we can experience the transition together in progressive harmony.

CONCEPT - The salvagable buildings will be utilized in a new woven system with four key threads. Each thread acts as an identifier for the type of program it holds through their individual
sets of rules and characteristics:
EXISTING BRICK - sets up boundaries to create fixed spaces that house the stacks and administration
METAL MESH - cantilevers out from the existing boundaries to house technological and mechanical functions
WOOD SHADES - in line with existing boundaries to house meeting and social spaces
GLASS SYSTEM - recessed back from the existing boundaries, providing circulation and movement

PROJECT: NEW MEDIA ART CENTER Jessica Donoghue, Katherine English & Laura Rakiewicz
This prioject was a group endevour, which provided an experience of a collaborative
studio setting. As a group, we took our project from concept
phases through to the completion of a comprehensive building
design.
In creating a new media art center, we drew inspiration from
the idea of scale and balance in transitioning the user from the larger experience of the
entire museum, to the intimate interaction with individual pieces.
We created a modular grid for the structure and layout of
spaces within the building, which allow for larger grand gstures of space to break down into smaller intimate spaces. The
structural system is comprised of steel compression trusses
working together with tension members, to create a delicate
system that relies on complete balance of both systems [known
as tensegrity] throughout the building.

time abroad
I was extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad in Rome. As an architectural designer, this time was the most impactful experience of my entire architectural education. I fell in love with so many aspects ranging from the textures, the scaling to the human body, the collaging of elements that vary in ages spanning over two thousand years, to the trees that appear to have come from a childrens book. I was also able to take weekend trips and spend an extra month in europe, soaking in as much as i could from as many different countries and cities i could afford to travel to.

THESIS STATEMENT
SYNOPSIS
LACK OF OPPORTUNITY:
Without the vitality of its industries, Detroit has been faced with shrinking populations, derelict downtown cores, and the phenomenon of brain draining. Efforts to revitalize parts of Detroit rarely have the footing to succeed, and many ideas are reapplied in other places successfully. Detroit needs a revitalized core that is a place to collaboratively cultivate ideas, experiment, and invent drawing in a youthful, energized, working class. This revitalized core will start in Corktown, and more specifically, with transforming one of Detroits most prominent icons of its decline: Michigan Central Station.
OPPORTUNITY IN ADVERSITY:
Detroit needs to be rebranded, desperately, or continue to lose its shrinking educated population and deter others from replacing them. The rebranding should come in the form of revamping the existing urban fabric, and exploring key adaptive reuse opportunities. Michigan Central Station is the one dominating icon in the landscape of Corktown. It stands 18 stories tall in its decaying, neoclassical grandeur, as a constant reminder of how far Detroit has fallen. Detroit needs a method for revitalizing the urban blight. A method that looks to its current and traditional fabrics, rather than continuing to demolish itself piece by piece and destroy whatever character Detroit has left.
PROGRAM:
Detroit needs a medium that will draw in the young, creative, and well-educated class and allow for their innovative inclinations to not only creatively, but economically prosper, reinstating a creative industry within Detroit. The program will feature flexibility in the types of users it draws in, being students, entrepreneurs, start-ups, or established players within the creative industry. The space will be flexible to reflect the users various needs, provide them with the structure to succeed creatively and economically, and provide them with shared tools to cut the costs and risks usually expended at the hands of innovation.
By creating a forum for entrepreneurial, creative industries to succeed, architecture has the potential to reshape the sociological patterns and image of Detroit.

Corktown is an ideal place to establish a new entrepreneurial core: -recent small business growth, -25% vacancy-diversity in terms of race, age & education-1 mile to downtown-Michigan Central Station
The new masterplan includes converting an abandoned industiral building and hotel into lofts and apartments. As well as introducing new structural framework, similar to that of the station, to be infilled with cafes, shops, a grocery store, and more living options for the revitalized district.

Only new additions to the building will be used to break through/past the boundaries of the existing - to connect the previously unconnected, whether that be user function linkage in the form of a stair, or an inside/outside connection in the form of a facade extrusion. These new additions can be seen as the white forms that will run throughout the entire building - acting as links or definers of space.

PROGRAM ELEMENTS
MAKERSPACES:
Various studios that will provide different tools and equipment to aid the makers produce their product or service. Within each makerspace is a fixed studio space, which is then surrounded by free studio space. The fixed space is defined by the white forms that pass through each space, and will opper-ate under specific hours to ensure safety and that no equipment is misused. The free space will have 24/7 access, and will feature a custom furniture system of tables, shelves, bins, and chairs that can be adapted into any configuration that best serves the users workplace needs.
MARKETPLACE:
A large market that links all of the different makerspaces and showcases in the heart of the building. Here the makers can set up stalls to sell their products to the visitors of the building.
SHOWCASE:
Several galleries are linked between the makerspaces and marketplace. These spaces can be used to highlight different makers, their products, or other developments that are happening within Detroit.
OFFICE SPACE:
Each tower has the flexibility to house different lease options for entrepreneurs and start-ups. A moving partition system will be used to allow a user to lease an entire block on one floor, or a smaller portion of that block.

The tower blocks on both sides of Michigan Central Station will be restored to their former appearances, and house office/studio space to be leased by entrepreneurs. The center portion of the building will be manipulated with the reinvented ideas of materiality in Detroit. The breakthroughs, chainlink, plywood, and natural growth featured each play a new, exciting role to the building, rather than being signifiers of vacant blight. The lower station will be opened up and turned into a garden, while the chainlink used on the outside of the building will allow for that garden to continue up the facade, which will reach up to a public roof garden to be used by occupants and visitors.
