The recipient of this Award isan individual who is on that questto reach then goals and isdemonstrating the "and thensome" spirit which is so much apart. of Toma's approach to sportsturf management.
Cuevas has demonstrated the"and then some" factor through-out his career. He started atRosenblatt as a hall shagger andearned his way onto the groundscrew and to the top positionthrough his eagerness to learnevery aspect of sports turf man-agement.
Rosenblatt Stadium is notonly horne of the Kamas CityRoyals Triple-A affiliate, it is thesite of such other events as con-certs, SCQutcamp outs, minorleague football games, andnumerous fireworks displays. For2 weeks each year, Cuevas servesas an ambassador for the sportsturf profession as he interactswith all the college, NCAA, andmedia personnel who gather forthe CWS. And he keeps the fieldin great shape throughout theevent. He also has coordinatedthe field construction upgradesthat have been a frequent occur-renee at Rosenblatt to accommo-date the C\VS. In addition, hehas become a mentor to manyturf professionals. His outstand-ing dedication and commitmentexemplify the standards recog-nized by the George TomaGolden Rake Award,
In typical fashion, Cuevas wasquick to credit his crew saying,"They should put the 'RosenblattStadium Ground Crew,' on thisinstead of my name, becausethose are the guys who get thework done. They figure out thecrazy ideas Icome up with andthey implement them." Cuevasalso credited former RosenblattStadium head groundskeeperFrank Mancuso and George'Ibma for shaping his career, say-ing, "Between Frank and George,Idon't know how anybody couldhave had two better teachers."
