singer-songwriter
returns with a clutch ofnostolgic observations steeped in rurol
Southern culture
Tony Joe White turned 70 this year, buthe shows no signs of slowing down when it
comes to writing, recording andperforming. And it's no surprise that the
writer of such classic hits as Po lkSalad
Annie, Rainy Night ln Georgia and Steomy
Windows should have come up with an
album of nine very personal songs
recorded at his own Church Street studio in
Franklin, Tennessee, not far from Nashville.
Recorded mostly live to tape with the
minimum of rehearsal, HooDoo opens on
the swampy rhythm of The Gift, an eerie
graveyard-set tale that sees White's doomy
vocal invoking the plantation era and the
ghosts of blues legends Robert Johnson
and Sam Lightnin' Hopkins. Further images
of rural hardship and destitution are
conjured upin AlligatorCity, with its
laboured drumbeat, rumbling bass lines,
underlying organ accompaniment and
well-placed guitar licks.
White also chronicles the effects of
environmental devastation in the aptly-
titled Storm Coming, which features some
stinging electric guitar accompaniment
and mellow keyboards over more mid-
paced moody drumbeats, while the even
more obviously-titled Ihe F/ood is a
brooding r&b-fl avoured recollection of
White's return from a gig in Memphis in
2010 to find Nashville underwater and his
home very nearly gone. lts low bass lines
and guitar licks underpin a gloomy

narrative from TJW that perfectly conveys
the sense ofdevastation. Perhaps the most
personalsong here is 9FootSdck,which tells
the tale of White's Louisiana upbringing on
his father's cotton farm which, appropriately,
helped putthe blues in his uniquewriting
style.lt's a bluesy, guitar-laced song all right,
influenced by Lightning Hopkins but
trading-in raucous for subtle
u nderstatemen t. Gy psy Ep i I og ue is the
definition of mellow and laid-back, as more
bluesy guitar licks and mandolin picking
interact against a backdrop of minor chords
and rippling organ sounds. This and Alligotor
City are the jewels in HooDoo's crown.
The mood of HooDoo is stripped-down,
low and smokey, retaining something of the
late JJ Cale. White's observationalwriting is
observing more than ever, making music in
the present while remaining rooted in the
hardship ofthe South's rural past.The
record could have varied its style a tad (ie:
it's a bit samey in places), which has cost it a
star, but overallthis cool collection ofwell-crafted songs comes highlyrecommended . Jeremy lsaac
