And it's no surprise that the writer of such classic hits as Po lkSalad Annie, Rainy Night ln Georgia and Steomy Windows should have come up with an album of nine very personal songs recorded at his own Church Street studio in Franklin, Tennessee, not far from Nashville. Recorded mostly live to tape with the minimum of rehearsal, HooDoo opens on the swampy rhythm of The Gift, an eerie graveyard-set tale that sees White's doomy vocal invoking the plantation era and the ghosts of blues legends Robert Johnson and Sam Lightnin' Hopkins. Further images of rural hardship and destitution are conjured upin AlligatorCity, with its laboured drumbeat, rumbling bass lines, underlying organ accompaniment and well-placed guitar licks. White also chronicles the effects of environmental devastation in the aptly- titled Storm Coming, which features some stinging electric guitar accompaniment and mellow keyboards over more mid- paced moody drumbeats, while the even more obviously-titled Ihe F/ood is a brooding r&b-fl avoured recollection of White's return from a gig in Memphis in 2010 to find Nashville underwater and his home very nearly gone. lts low bass lines and guitar licks underpin a gloomy N EW RELEASES narrative from TJW that perfectly conveys the sense ofdevastation. Perhaps the most personalsong here is 9FootSdck,which tells the tale of White's Louisiana upbringing on his father's cotton farm which, appropriately, helped putthe blues in his uniquewriting style.lt's a bluesy, guitar-laced song all right, influenced by Lightning Hopkins but trading-in raucous for subtle u nderstatemen t. Gy psy Ep i I og ue is the definition of mellow and laid-back, as more bluesy guitar licks and mandolin picking interact against a backdrop of minor chords and rippling organ sounds. This and Alligotor City are the jewels in HooDoo's crown. The mood of HooDoo is stripped-down, low and smokey, retaining something of the late JJ Cale. White's observationalwriting is observing more than ever, making music in the present while remaining rooted in the hardship ofthe South's rural past.The record could have varied its style a tad (ie: it's a bit samey in places), which has cost it a star, but overallthis cool collection of well-crafted songs comes highly recommended .
