  • Jelly Roll Half-Square Triangle 25-Block, 25-Week Challenge

By Liz Katsuro, Copyright October 2015

My finished HST Challenge Quilt Top!

  • In February 2015, I challenged anyone who was interested to take on one block a week of a 25-block quilt made up entirely of half-square triangles! (Except the sashing, of course!) Half-square triangles are one of the most groan-worthy components of a quilt block until now. Using jelly roll strips, creating the HSTs is a breeze and assigning yourself only one block a week well, anyone can do that! Right? Lots of people took on the challenge and we all ended up with lovely quilts when the challenge ended in July. Skip to the end of the e-book to see all the HST finished quilts! Whether you want to make your quilt over 6 months or just bang it out in a few weeks, this e-book will show you exactly how to make 25 different blocks using 16 HSTs each, and then put them together into a lap-size quilt or wallhanging. Added borders can make the HST quilt the centerpiece of a larger quilt, or add duplicates of your favorite blocks! Heres what youll need to make the 25-block quilt top: -(25) 2.5 main color fabric strips (mine are various black prints) -(25) 2.5 contrast or background fabric strips (mine are solid white) -(17) 2.5 contrast/background fabric for the sashing and outer border -(6-8) 2.5 main fabric strips for binding Shopping list: (2) 20-strip jelly rolls in the color of your choice, (3) 20-strip jelly rolls in solid white, print white or solid black, or another fabric of your choice (single fabric/binding strip jelly rolls offer a variety of other color background options) Find all our jelly rolls perfect for making the HST quilt at http://jellyrollfabric.net! Youll end up with an extra 4 HSTs from each block, which you can incorporate into your backing or just use in another project. -Use 1/4" seams and be as consistent as possible about it! This will greatly improve the accuracy of your blocks. Your blocks will end up about 9 3/4". -Do not pull or tug open your HSTs when ironing them just press them open with steam.

  • -Each set of two strips will make up to 20 HST blocks (16 of which you will need for your big block).

Im hoping no one can miss this link:

The tutorial for how to make HSTs from jelly roll

    strips is here!

  • Block 1 Jack In The Box/Colorado Original blog post is here

Pinterest board is here First, choose a set of strips - 1 main, and 1 contrast. I picked the darkest fabric I had because I wanted that center pinwheel to really pop! Make your 16 HSTs using the tutorial linked to above. There is a good chance, especially if you're a beginning quilter, that you're going to have a few HSTs that don't come out as nicely as the rest (the first and last in the strip, for example). So choose the best 16 to use for your block. Assemble your block! Here's the layout of the 16 triangles in the block:

    http://www.jellyrollfabric.net/HST-Challenge--Block-One--Jack-In-The-Box-aka-Colorado_b_2.htmlhttp://www.jellyrollfabric.net/HST-Challenge--Block-One--Jack-In-The-Box-aka-Colorado_b_2.htmlhttps://www.pinterest.com/lizkatsuro/hst-block-1-jack-in-the-boxcolorado-quilts-blocks/

  • Youll need to make 4 each of the triangle block on the top, and 4 each of the bottom - diagonal going from top left to bottom right.

You'll have a quarter inch seam allowance above the top point of your triangle and your diagonals will have one on either side of the seam.

  • Then, join them to make 4 blocks that look like a hook!

Again, you'll have a 1/4" gap around the points of your triangle, and one on the left side of the bottom of your "hook".

  • Now, we do a little turning... top left stays put, top right gets turned once to the right, bottom left gets turned once to the left, and bottom right gets turned upside down.

You should see a pinwheel in the center of your block now!

  • Connect your squares and your block is done!

One last thought: -When you are sewing together components of the block where two seams meet - try to make sure those seams meet each other perfectly! Line them up before you start your seam and stay aware of them. Those seams are where your triangle points are coming together!

  • The components of the block are 8 flying geese blocks! Make 8 of the unit below, or 4 of two different flying geese blocks.

Press half to the right, and half to the left so the seams won't be on top of each other when you join them into larger blocks in the next step.

  • Make 8 Flying Geese blocks:

  • Next join them into blocks - if using two different fabrics, put your first fabric on top, and the second on bottom consistently for all 4 blocks

  • To form the finished block, arrange your 4 smaller blocks like so:

Join together to make your finished Week 2 block!

    http://www.jellyrollfabric.net/HST-Challenge--Block-Three--Balkan-PuzzleWindblown-Star_b_4.htmlhttps://www.pinterest.com/lizkatsuro/hst-block-3-balkan-puzzlewindswept-star/

  • Make 4 of each:

  • Join one flying geese block with one diagonal block - flying geese on the bottom, point up - to make the block below.

To arrange into the pattern for your block, keep an eye on your flying geese. Your upper left flying geese block will be pointing to the right, the upper

  • right flying geese will be pointing down, the lower right FG will be pointing left, and the lower left will be pointing up. Make sure youve got a contrast

color diamond in the center of the block:

Now join them together into your finished block!

  • The block broken down into its quarter block:

  • So make 4 of these lil' suckers (make sure your black triangles are pointing down and to the right):

    And make 4 flying geese:

  • Connect those two blocks, with the flying goose on the bottom, and the two-HST component with the triangles pointing down and to the right:

Arrange your 4 blocks into the Tea Party layout:

  • Join them together into your finished block!

  • Here are your 8 two-HST components:

Make 4 each of the 2 blocks above

  • And here's your block made up of those two components that will comprise

all 4 quadrants of your block:

    Make 4 of this block.

Make sure your "diagonal" goes from bottom left to upper right with your main fabric (black in my pictures) and that your flying goose (white in my

picture) made of your background contrast fabric is pointing down.

  • Now it's easy to see if you've got your block laid out right before sewing this one. You'll have a diamond in the center of your block using your main fabric, and your contrast/background fabric will be pointing into each

    corner.

Now join them together into your finished block!

Here are the simple instructions for how to make the simple finish I used.

    1. You'll need 16 white jelly roll strips for the long sashing strips. Sew them together in pairs so that you have 8 long white strips (80" long).

    2. From each end of the long strip, cut 10". That will be 16 pieces (these will

be used for the short sashing pieces).

    3. From one more white jelly roll strip, cut 4 more 10" pieces.

    http://www.jellyrollfabric.net/Finished-HST-Quilt-Top-Sashing-Instructions_b_27.htmlhttps://www.pinterest.com/lizkatsuro/finished-hst-challenge-quilt-tops/

  • 4. For blocks 1-4, 6-9, 11-14, 16-19, and 21-14, attach a 10" piece of short sashing, and then trim the 10" piece down to fit your block. The sashing will

be set to the right in the next step.

    5. Attach blocks 1-4, 6-9, 11-14, 16-19, and 21-14 together in rows.

    6. Add the end blocks (5, 10, 15, 20, 25) to each row.

    7. Add long sashing to the bottom of each row. Match up the seam in the sashing to the middle seam in your middle block. You'll have extra on each

    end; trim off.

    8. Attach rows to each other.

    9. Add a sashing strip to the top of your quilt top, and then to each side.

(You may have noticed that my 3rd row got flipped somewhere in the process. Oops! Still lookin' good, I think :D)
