    • Campaign “Stop Sepsis” in Croatia

    • Nurses – “front line staff”, important members in reducing morbidity and mortality of sepsis

  • Global Sepsis Alliance

    • Non-profit charity organization with the aim to raise awareness of sepsis worldwide and reduce sepsis deaths by 20 % by 2020.

  • World Sepsis Day

    • WSD is held on September 13th every year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against sepsis.

    • Sepsis accounts for at least 8 million deaths worldwide annually. Yet, depending on country and education, sepsis is known only to 7 – 50 % of the people.

    • This lack of knowledge makes sepsis the number one preventable cause of death worldwide.

  • World news

    • WHA Adopts Resolution on Sepsis

    • On Friday, May 26th, 2017, the World Health Assembly and the World Health Organization made sepsis a global health priority.

    • The resolution urges the 194 United Nation Member States to implement appropriate measures to reduce the human and health economic burden of sepsis.

  • Why we need Campaigne?

    • Sepsis affects over 20 000 000 - 30 000 000 people annually

    • Every 3 – 4 sec someone dies from consequence of sepsis

    • More than AIDS, breast cancer and prostate cancer together

    • Croatia??? Estimated around 50,000 people annually

  • Campaign “Stop Sepsis”in Croatia

    • March 2014 CNSARICT signed World Sepsis Declaration and joined Global Sepsis Alliance

    • We have commmited ourselves to make some changes on a field of sepsis relating to prevention, early recognition, improving sepsis awareness

    • = and as the ultimate goal - reducing the number of diseased and deceased patients with sepsis

  • What have we done?

    • We founded Campaign “Stop Sepsis”

    • Conducted public health actions (nurses and physicians have educated citizens about early sepsis simptoms, shared brochures....)

    • Education of health professionals (through organized courses, congresses, articles in professional journals, writing the chapters about sepsis for bachleor degree nurses....)

    • Zagreb, Pula, Varaždin, Knin, Čakovec, Koprivnica, Rijeka, Našice ...

  • Public health actions - improving sepsis awareness

  • CNSARICT made the poster about sepsis, meningococcal sepsis, neonatal and children sepsis and distributed it in every hospital in Croatia.

  • • CNSARICT launched a facebook page „Stop Sepsis“ / “Zaustavimo sepsu“ [email protected], https://www.facebook.com/zaustavimo.sepsu/

    • CNSARICT was every year active in media promoting WSD and raising public awareness of sepsis

    • CNSARICT has developed a brochure about sepsis intended for the public (newborns, children, mothers and adults).

    https://www.facebook.com/zaustavimo.sepsu/

  • • CNSARICT has developed a pocket brochure for health care professionals which are shared on all acute sites in every hospital in Croatia.

  • • CNSARICT has translated 63 WFCCN guidelines about nursing care for septic patients. The manual was published online and is available in the Zagreb University Library. Manual was sent in multiple copies in every hospital in Croatia.

  • • CNSARICT has conducted a research from 01.01.2015 to 31.12.2015 with objective to determine the number of mortalities and morbidities of sepsis in three ICUs of the Clinic of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care University Hospital Centre Zagreb.

  • Morbidity and mortality of sepsis at the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care,

    Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb, Croatia

    • Results: The total number of patients admitted in general, cardiac andneurosurgical intensive care unit in Clinical Hospital Center Zagreb in 2015was 3169. Sepsis occured in 67 patients, while the septic shock affected 16patients.

    • Total number of ICU patient deaths was 127, of which 31 patients died fromthe direct consequences of sepsis and septic shock. The median age ofpatients with sepsis, severe sepsis and septic shock was 65.

    • In patients with sepsis, the lungs were the most common site of infection(67%), followed by the blood (48%) and urinary tract (46%). The mostcommon microorganisms were Pseudomonas aureginosa (46%),Staphylococcus (41%) and Candida albicans (40%).

This research shows that Croatian Hospital

Centre Zagreb has lower occurrence of sepsis

and septic shock than most ICUs in the world

  • Nurses – “front line staff”, important members in reducing morbidity and

    mortality of sepsis

    • 24 hour care for patients

    • Still the largest group of health workers

    • Most competent to raise public and health professionals awareness of sepsis

    • Most competent to educate public and health professionals about the first signs and symptoms of sepsis

  • • Rinaldo Bellomo - the most important reason contributing to these positive results - a unique feature in Australian hospitals - one nurse to one patient.
