As I write this, my last column, I am reminded of all the people who have been diligently working not just
by my side, but on behalf of your Arts Association during my several years on the Board, the last three as Pres-
ident. It is impossible to thank everyone for their devotion to our organization, but know how much I value
your time, effort, input, opinions and friendship. Some of my best friends are the direct result of my time vol-
unteering for JIAA.
You are all terrific, and we could not do what we do, have the successes we have had, nor been such a vital
part of Jekyll Island life without each of you. Whether you volunteered on the front desk, made cookies for
events, worked at the Festival, sang with the Singers, were guild members, or were there to do whatever we
needed, whenever we needed you, Jekyll Island Arts Association would not function without each of you and
what you bring to us. Thank you so much for being a part of the Jekyll Island Arts Association.
We are looking for volunteers for a litany of options this year. Jekyll Island Arts Association remains a
volunteer, non-profit organization, and we need your help! If you take classes, enter items in the shop or the
Festival, or anything else that we provide as part of your membership, we’d appreciate your help for a couple
of hours a month to help our operations function smoothly. See the list elsewhere in the newsletter for a list of
open positions to help us continue to run smoothly. We have several immediate, high profile needs, and you
do not HAVE to be on the Board to do them. Contact Caryl Rice ([email protected]) as soon as possible
to talk about the options for open positions.
Your new President, Caryl Rice, will be steering the ship in January and please welcome her. Caryl and I
started out together in 2013 as co-coordinators of Classes. Then she and Dilys Jagger took on yeoman’s work
to make the Festival terrific for three years, as well as Merry Artists for two years. Meantime, she has chaired
our Communications team, has been Vice President, and you will love her! Join me in wishing Caryl a won-
derful first year as President.
Hope everyone has a glorious holiday season and a very happy new year. And to all of our winter guests,
we look forward to seeing you back on Jekyll Island in the very near future!

JIAA 2019 ANNUAL ARTS FESTIVAL
We Need Your Support!!!
The New Year has rolled in and 2019 has arrived; turning our thoughts to JIAA’s 45th annual Arts Festi-
val. The official dates, March 8th, 9th & 10th are fast approaching. I want to encourage everyone to join those
members who have already committed to making this annual Festival the best ever. This is a time when JIAA
members come together. Volunteering is easy, fun and a great way for you to get to know your fellow mem-
bers. Please watch for an email with the link to Sign Up Genius, (SUG). Thanks to Lynn Herbert who has gra-
ciously volunteered to create the SUG site listing the positions and volunteers needed. Myself, along with
each Chair person, request your support by signing up to volunteer your time for one or more of the many fun
and great opportunities during Festival hours or at set up and/or take down.
A highlight of our Festival is the Juried Arts Show each year. I am being told this year’s exhibit will be one
of the best ever. We are proud to have judging our show, Professors from Valdosta State University, Depart-
ment of Arts and Design. You will find the prospectus for the 2019 show posted on JIAA’s site the first week
of January. It will also be sent out to all members. Please review the guidelines for submitting you’re “Fine
Art” for the juried show. Also, please note, we will begin acceptance of your pre-registered art work on Sun-
day, March 3rd from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. We will continue acceptance on Monday, March 4th, from 9:00
a.m. until 1:00 p.m.
Our Pottery Guild will again have exceptional pieces of Raku, Hand thrown and hand- built pottery for
sale, along with demonstrations of the Art from some of our most talented pottery members. In the Classes
and Demo tent, we will have many great artist demonstrating their skills, talents and works. We will have
many pieces of beautiful Fiber Art, exceptional Photography, Sculptures, Heritage Art and many types of
Handmade Art. There will be a tent with our members famous bake goods, a promo tent selling logo imprint-
ed T-shirts, posters and bags. In the kids art tent, many original
art pieces will be made. On Saturday, an additional attraction will be the Antique Car show. There will be
something for everyone………….
A few changes have been made in the hours of operation this year. The 2019, 45th annual Festival will
open each day, Friday and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and close each day at 5:00 p.m. On Sunday the Festival
will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 4:00 p.m., at which time the Festival official-
ly ends.
Please know that what makes JIAA Arts
Festival a success is ‘YOU’ the member. So,
whether you simply attend, VOLUNTEER or
participate in any way, we look forward to
seeing you. Thank you!!

CLASSES NEWSLETTER January 2019
January 2019 Page 3
Classes are one of your JIAA membership benefits… it’s still not too late to enroll in Winter classes which
begin January 3, 2019. If you enroll in a class and the online class says it is “full”, but you would like to be
added to the waiting list”, please click YES. The waiting list is important. It offers us the opportunity to
offer enrollment to an interested party if someone drops out of a class that was full. It is also our way of
knowing which classes are popular enough to warrant the addition of a second class.
Enrollments are trending ahead of last year, but many of the classes still have room. There are LOTS of
new classes and new instructors to pique your interest. If you want to take a class which is not offered this
year, please let us know and we’ll try to add it next year’s offerings.
Check the online catalog at jekyllartists.com. Login with your email address and go to the Member Home-
page. You can print a registration form from the website or pick one up at Goodyear Cottage and drop it off at
Goodyear or mail in completed registration forms with your payment. The mailing address is PO Box 13201,
Jekyll Island, GA 31527…please mark the outside of the envelope “Classes” so it gets to us promptly.
And as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us (see our e-mail ad-
dresses below).
See you in Class!

JEKYLL ISLAND SINGERS
If you attended the Jekyll Island Singers Concert in December, you heard the history of the
Singers group…and you may have hummed along with us at that concert. We present two
concerts a year – the Christmas concert in December and a Spring Concert in March. You are
cordially invited to come and sing with us.
Practice is held every Monday, beginning Jan. 15, 3:00 – 4:30 at the Jekyll Island Methodist Church. Jek-
yll Island Singers is open to all members of the Arts Association and we’re always looking for good singers to
join us. Best of all, there is no try out! After the Spring Concert, we do not practice until September.
We’d love to have YOU join us.

MESSAGE TO MERRY ARTISTS Caryl Rice
The 2018 Merry Artists Holiday Sale was a wonderful success. One hundred and fifty-seven artists contribut-
ed over 4,000 items to our inventory. The display was beautiful, thanks to Joanne Munzar and her team. Reg-
istration and price tag printing went smoothly, thanks to Jackie Becker and Rita Thompson. Goodyear Cottage
was beautifully dressed in Christmas finery thanks to Pat Lelli and her team. And thanks to all the volunteers
who signed up to fill 156 volunteer shifts to set up and take down the display, bake cookies, staff the sales
desk, help as a sales assistant or as a host. Volunteers are the backbone of the Jekyll Island Arts association
and we can’t thank you enough.
We had record sales this year with weekends being the biggest days. Sales were over $27,000 and our mem-
ber artists will receive 75%.
The most exciting improvement this year was for the sales desk volunteers. The Merry Artist sale was the first
time the new barcode scanning process was used to complete sales and print receipts. No more hand-written
sales tickets, and, a significantly reduced wait-time for customers! Thanks to Mahlon Stacy, Darrell Davidson,
Deb Patterson, Luana Dickey and Craig Patterson for all of their work.
If you haven’t been trained yet on the new scanning system and would
like to learn how to volunteer for the Goodyear sales desk, contact
Caryl Rice at [email protected].
Thanks again to all who helped make Merry Artists a success.
